Help finding title/author.

I read a novel back in the mid 90's that I would like to revisit. Naturally, the title and author escape me. The plot revolved around a man who had returned to his hometown after a lengthy absence. His old homestead seemed to cause him to have bad partial recollections/visions. I seem to recall him having strained relations with a brother and missing children factored heavily in the resolution. I don't believe that it was written by any of the major players, could have been a one off flash in the pan. Thanks for any guidance.
