"Envy is a deadly sin, but bookshelf envy has proven to be a source of inspiration. Reorganizing my shelves has changed the way I think about books and the people who write them. Here on the shelves I've gathered my own inner circle: the books I feel closest to, the people who matter to me."

In chapter 6, Anne shares a story of creating a "friends and family" bookshelf in her home. Inspired by an author-friend who knew many people who had published works, Anne found that she had to get a bit creative with her own shelf. With a lack of intimate relations who were also published authors, she began to explore authors and characters whom she felt could be family. These made her shelf.

Looking at your own reading life, what authors feel as close as family to you? What characters resonate deeply with the inner workings of your own soul? If you had to fill a shelf with books that were like family to you, which ones would make your inner circle?
