A short story, written in either the 18th or 19th Century, about a violin player and his teacher.
Despite their hard work, the pair become extremely jealous of a talented violinist who has taken the country by storm. After hearing diabolical tales of the music star using human body parts for his violin strings, (view spoiler)[the teacher willingly makes the ultimate sacrifice for his student. The student initially finds success, but is ultimately and publically cursed for the act. (hide spoiler)]
I believe the author was German or Austrian.
