Read the book about 6 years ago. I think the book was published in the last 20 years. Stuff that I think happened:

1) The protagonist gets sufficiently rich to purchase an entire building.

2) I think it may have all played out in London.

3) I think he may have had an accident that he got a payout from, which made him pretty rich.

4) He is able to pay for someone, who is really clever and is said to have a mind which buzzes, to recreate a scene for him. This is perhaps from his imagination. I think this is to help him recover from the trauma of the accident.

5) At one point, in an absurd scene, there are black cats on the roof, which then start falling off.

6) I know that he seeks the perfect scene and pays a lot of money to make it happen.
