You can't blame Maddie and Ellis for their shortcomings when you weigh in their parents' behavior. Between the four parents, it's hard to decide which one was more cruel. It seemed like their choices to teach their children the hard lessons came too late, and too severe. Did Maddie's mom really want Maddie to discover her dead body or be the one who had to save her? Ellis's father is the reason they all got into the mess in the first place, but would it truly "fix" Ellis and vindicate him if he found the monster?
