THATS IT!!! Thank you so much. I am a bit embarrassed by not knowing this. I finished Jemisin's The Broken Earth series last summer and loved it. It is nice to know I read something of her's 10 years ago and liked it. More to add to the reading list.

I believe the main character (MC) was recruited to live/serve in a city with Gods. Learned magic, possibly elemental. MC was part of the population that supported the Gods. Warring factions, fighting for power. Took place in a fictional world. I vaguely remember the city being up high (top of massive trees or mountains) and the concept of 'going up' or climbing.
