Michelle (michelletheresa) | 228 comments Hello all you lovely Iggle Bookworms!! Since a lot of you are into the 2015 year challenges we started posting earlier this week I had an idea for a new monthly challenge.
Each month we will have a new challenge for you based on the round theme for that month. So for example January's round theme is Retro Video Games. And your challenge is to read a book that has a video game theme.

Rules are:
-It has to be a new book for you, one you haven't read before
-It must be different than our other book picks, so it can't be the same main, comic book, manga or series we are reading that month
-You have to read it within that month to get the achievement. So no reading a video game themed book in February and expecting the January achievement.
-Check in with us once you've read your book, you can do that here, on twitter, the IGGPPC forums or our new Instagram page (which should be up soon!!) I love seeing covers so take a picture and share with us!

This is something that we just threw together so if you have any suggestions to make this challenge better please feel free to let me know! And of course its not something you have to do, but hopefully a fun way to challenge yourself to read harder!

Here is a list of some books to help you out!!

Elizabeth (persephone17) So excited for this! ^_^

message 4: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts I think I'm going to try ready player one - so excited, it's not something I would ever normally choose myself so I'm looking forward to giving it a try :-)

I REALLY enjoyed Ready Player One! I highly suggest the audiobook, Will Wheaton narrates it and he's pretty awesome at his job!

Michelle (michelletheresa) | 228 comments Rush

It think I'm going to read Rush. The cover caught my attention!

message 7: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (persephone17) I was actually going to ask about this- we read Ready Player One back in September, but if a member hasn't read it yet for our regular books, can they use it for the challenge, Michelle?
Also, since In Real Life is a book club pick of the month, it won't count towards the challenge, but Also, here's a list of books I've found that are video game related!

-Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation
-Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America
-Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life
-Level Up
-The Guild

You can also read any of the novels that are based off of video games- Bioshock, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Halo, etc. I hope this helps! And if you want to take this past books for a fun add on, I've heard the documentary Indie Game(on Netflix) is really good. It basically addresses how video games are made, the indie game network, etc.

message 8: by Clémence (new)

Clémence | 117 comments Sooo maybe it's time for me to read Scott Pilgrim... At last...

message 9: by Kim (new)

Kim (thepeachmartini) Finally decided on "Ready Player One"!

message 10: by Heather (new)

Heather (seaanemone) | 19 comments I'm going for 'jPod' by Coupland, which has mixed reviews. I vaguely remember liking the TV series based off it, though.

message 11: by Danica (new)

Danica (danicaface) | 13 comments This sounds like a wonderful excuse to finally read Ready Player One!

Sarah (AdventGeekGirl) (adventgeekgirl) | 56 comments Since I already joined the cult of Wade, I will be going for The Guild, because I seriously love Felicia Day. Woot!

Elizabeth (persephone17) Sarah wrote: "Since I already joined the cult of Wade, I will be going for The Guild, because I seriously love Felicia Day. Woot!"

I'm considering reading that, too! I'll probably read Ready Player One, but I think I'll definitely be checking out the graphic novels, too. I still need to finish The Guild!

Sarah (AdventGeekGirl) (adventgeekgirl) | 56 comments OMG!! FINISH IT!!! I can still remember the days of binge watching The Guild at our friend's apartment and then playing epic sessions of Pandemic. Good times.

message 15: by Emma (new)

Emma (epalmerbrown) Drat! I just read 4 books on retro video games. Off the back of that I can recommend Jordan Mechner's diaries of the making of Karateka and Prince of Persia.

message 16: by Cassie (new)

Cassie | 15 comments If PC Games count, some of you might like Masters of Doom: How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture. I read it last year and it's pretty fantastic.
I have not entered the world of The Guild and think that it needs to happen. Still haven't read Ready Player One either though... #choices

message 17: by Shellie (new)

Shellie (sabille) | 6 comments Yay! I want to be far more active in this group. I miss having a reading group. I'm picking Ready Player One. I got the audio version so that Wil Wheaton can read it to me. :)

Sarah (AdventGeekGirl) (adventgeekgirl) | 56 comments Ok, I'm going to put my geeky heel down and say IF YOU HAVEN'T READ Ready Player One by Ernest Cline YOU NEED TO DO IT NO CHOICES! READ THE BOOK!

Then if you want to read others, do that, but YOU HAVE TO READ Ready Player One by Ernest Cline! IT IS GEEKY REQUIRED READING! ;-)

message 19: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I'm currently on a Dragon Age kick before playing Inquisition and am reading Asunder. But I've already read it once before so I'll use the next book Masked Empire towards this challenge.

Yay!!

Oh, yeah. Ready Player One is brilliant. A book I stumbled upon myself and seriously loved it.

message 20: by Katie (new)

Katie Kempski (darthphasma) | 120 comments I LOVE Ready Player One! I wish I hadn't read it just so I could read it again. Heck, I'm going to read it again anyway. I'll just read another for the challenge... XD

I realized I'm actually reading Revan right now. I didn't realize that was a video game-based book.

Anyway, which sounds better to you? Reamde or The Eye of Minds? If you've read them, please let me know if they're worth buying! :D

Congrats, Desiree! You're on top of things! :D

message 26: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts When Michelle posted the theme for this challenge I totally panicked before I saw her link for suggestions. I didn't even realise that this was a genre. It's really interesting to see all the different books that you guys already read from this genre. I'm not sure that it's a topic I will stick with but I'm glad that the challenge has broadened my horizons and like I said it's really interesting me to see what others are reading.

That's totally why I love this group so much. I pick up books I know I'd never even look at otherwise, and I end up loving them. Teaches me not to judge a book by its cover. ;D

message 28: by Arielle (new)

Arielle | 1 comments I agree that anyone who has NOT read Ready Player One MUST do so! It is such a good book and the audiobook is very well narrated. That being said, I love this theme, as I need to do "research" for the novel I'm currently revising, which is video game themed. :3

message 29: by Christa (new)

Christa (lessthn3) | 90 comments Awesome! I was just recommended Off to Be the Wizard, so that'll be my pick. And I will add to the praise for Ready Player One! It's one of my all-time favorite books.

message 30: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I've just finished reading Dragon Age The Masked Empire for this challenge as I'm in a bit of a Dragon Age hype. I so want to play Inquisition... now.

I'd definitely recommend these books to anyone who has played the games.

message 31: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts @jennifer - well done you. Much praise and accolades for being first past the post :-)

message 32: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer @Fay Thanks! :D

I'm usually lagging behind but I whizzed through it this time. Maybe because I was reading it anyway and I have to read all of the series now so I want to start playing Inquisition soon. One book left then I'm allowed to buy the game! Weeee!

message 33: by Jemma (new)

Jemma (jemmaj) | 53 comments Ooh I do not know if there is any about for me to read; I am going to check out Bookcrossing and have a mosey around the local libraries this weekend! I'll keep you all posted!

message 34: by Heather (last edited Jan 08, 2015 05:51PM) (new)

Heather (seaanemone) | 19 comments As I mentioned, I read jPod by Douglas Coupland for January's theme challenge. The video game tie-in is that the titular jPod refers to a group of game programmers. They are tasked with inserting a turtle character into a skateboard game, and later take it upon themselves to sabotage the game with the insertion of a maniacal Ronald McDonald character. But then there's also ballroom dancing, casual murder, China, and a hugging machine. I liked the book, I found it a natural read, with good flow. Some clunky pop cultures references and I didn't really appreciate or need some of the unique stylization/organization of text. I read this book at work and the disenchanted characters seemed like friends to me, and I briefly embraced my neuroses.

As I also mentioned jPod was a (Canadian) TV series as well. And it was pretty good, especially by Canadian TV standards.

message 35: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts How good is Ready Player One?!?!? I can't believe I'd never even heard of it before. Completely compulsive reading. But now the husband is home so I have to stop boooooooo

message 36: by Cassie (new)

message 37: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts @cassie - he was in his Latin class having a pivotal moment and my husband walked in and was like "hay, hay, hay, I finished early isn't that great?!??" Erm no - go back to work, kids are home tomorrow and I can't wait until Monday!

message 39: by Danica (new)

Danica (danicaface) | 13 comments I just finished Ready Player One for this challenge! I'm glad I read it, but I wasn't as excited about it as a lot of you seem to be...

message 40: by Kim (last edited Jan 13, 2015 11:38AM) (new)

Kim (thepeachmartini) Ready Player One - finished on Friday! I enjoyed it, and it will probably be one I re-read when nothing else seems to strike my fancy. I could get lost exploring the various worlds, though, and I want to know more about the "real world"!

Edited to add: Here's a link to my review of the book - SPOILER FREE of course!!
