Melissa | 298 comments That's awesome Rusalka, seeing an aurora is definitely on my bucket list! We are going to Alaska in September, but from what I read it's not a good time of year to see the northern lights.
Peggy-did you see the Foo Fighters? I heard Dave Grohl broke his leg?!?!

It would bug me too after I had looked.

Wait. Have you visited the country before or after the flag's change? Because the flag you have may be right after all...

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I don't know when Peggy visited the country, but in a previous comment she said they started traveling in 2004, and the flag changed in 1990, so no way.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Melissa, no, unfortunately the concert was cancelled :(

Mariab, we were there only a few years ago, so I guess it will have to change ;-)

It seems that every clothing item has a different name in the UK, the US, and Australia!

Congrats Stephanie!

First day of summer holidays for me today, yay! The weather has finally improved so hopefully I can sit outside in the afternoon.

message 3259: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I told my partner about your flag canvas Peggy and he thought it was a great idea and a wonderful visual incentive to make you choose different destinations for holidays. It's like YLTO badges ;-)

message 3260: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Hahaha, it is Sarah! The only negative thing is that Rob wants to have a new flag on every trip we make, which basically means he refuses to visit the same country twice ;-)

message 3261: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Congratz Stephanie

I agree with him Piggy .. You travel to see new things no to see things you've already seen !!

I just got back from my orthodontist appointment .. It went great, I have black braces for the big holy days we're having in less than 3 weeks :D

I guess I'll stick with black .. It suits everything I wear !

message 3262: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Glad your appointment went well. It's amazing the colours you can get for the braces and bands now. I heard the normal silver with clear elastic bands. I don't miss them that's for sure.

I think I'd be the same Peggy if I had one on my wall. I'd be nagging my partner all th time about going on holiday and would want to collect every flag.

Found my new nemesis - horse flies. Not seen them before but they are seriously ugly. apparently their bites are really painful and because of the fear of the unknown, I scream like a girl when I'm trying to shoo one out of the boat. wasps and bees are fine. I've been stung before. not pleasant but I know what it's like.

message 3263: by Peggy (last edited Jun 25, 2015 03:03AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I agree about seeing new things, but sometimes there's more to see in one country than fits in one trip. I've been avoiding doing city trips to Dublin and Oslo for example, because I want to see way more of the country than just that. And if we do a city trip there, the chance of going there again any time soon is basically non-existent ;-) We make exceptions though, I think we will go to Madrid in the next year or so even though Spain is already on the canvas.

Same braces for me Sarah. That is all they had. My colleague and a friend had transparent ones, so you don't notice them so much. Black sounds cool too CFDeeDee!

I don't like most insects either Sarah, especially not big ones, stinging ones, or ones I've never seen before. With wasps and bees I just sit still until they leave, but lots of others make me run and scream ;-)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Horse flies don't sting but they do chomp hard . I'd take a horse fly over a deer fly anyday

message 3265: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Thanks, Kandice, Peggy and CFDeeDee :)
I'm so excited for the team :) they had a lot of injuries this year! I can't believe the parade is already tonight! Should be a lot of fun :)

message 3266: by Tasha (new)

Tasha We have horse flies here (we have a barn behind our property) and I usually get nervous too when I see them around. I haven't been bit lately but I think I was bit as a kid by one bc I seem to remember that they hurt!

message 3267: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Horse flies do hurt! We had an above ground swimming pool when I was a kid and for whatever reason, they liked to hang around it. If one landed on us while we were in the pool, you had to go under water really fast. It was a game, but also a fear of being bitten. I'm still scared of them!

message 3268: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @Sarah: I had the clear elastic before, but the problem was it changes color if I eat anything with red sauce! How weird is that !! I've never heard of horse flies before so I had to google it .. They do look scary ..

@Peggy: yeah I don't mind going to new places in the same country that I went to before, but still a new country sounds better ..
I've seen the transparent ones too, but they cost a lot .. A friend of mine has diamond braces, it doesn't only move your teeth, but it also change the way you look, your chin, your nose, your cheeks !! But that is also 30X more expensive than a normal braces.

@Stephanie: Enjoy your time ;)

Horse flies are horrible! I remember going horse riding once whilst on holiday in Corfu and we were literally surrounded by them for most of the ride. We had used repellent but a few still bit us. Much of the ride was taken up with us trying to swipe them off the poor horses!

message 3270: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Horse flies actually take a chunk out of you, and the venom they leave is horribly itchy. I don't think I've been bitten by deer flies. If they're worse than horse flies, I don't want to make their acquaintance.

message 3271: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I can't say if deer flies are worse than horse flies, but I do know that both are horribly itchy/painful bites!

They're worse than bees or wasps because my experience is that the bees and wasps at least try to avoid you whereas the flies actually seem to seek you out! Blech!

message 3272: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Think with deer flies for me is they yave badically same venom as either wasps or hornets which I'm allergic to. After going through years of shots I can fare ok now with hornets and wasps but deer fly bites swell up on me like crazy

message 3273: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments You've all reassured me loads. ;-) I react to bites of any kind so that worries me most I think. But what will be will be.

message 3274: by Tasha (new)

Tasha yeah, I guess we made that worse for you Sarah! Sorry!

message 3275: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Thank god I didn't have any action with those flies, and I hope I don't !! The only fly I had action with are the normal house flies .. And they end up did if they miss with me ..

message 3276: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Sorry Sarah! Keep some Benadryl (or whatever similar product you have there) on hand incase of any bites or stings. Lavender essential oil also helps with any itchiness or pain.

message 3277: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I've only seen house flies here in Virginia. We have house centipedes here. They eat other bugs but they are so gross looking. We mostly find them in our bathroom (we are on the main floor of our apartment building). But today I found one in the kitchen on the wall. Knocked it down with a broom and smooshed it! Bug guy forgot to show up on Monday (per our apartment we were missed on their list) so hopefully he remembers this coming Monday!

Tasha KimeyDiann wrote: "Sorry Sarah! Keep some Benadryl (or whatever similar product you have there) on hand incase of any bites or stings. Lavender essential oil also helps with any itchiness or pain."

yes, lavender oil is great to stop itching. I usually mis it up with coconut oil or jojoba oil and it stops the itch.

message 3280: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yep I'm on it with the essential oils - I'm an aromatherapist :-) but I find tiger balm is most effective. And hardcore anti histamine. I bet I won't get bit after worrying about it. I did get a bit sunburnt today though. Doh!

message 3281: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Well bummer :( we aren't going to be able to make the welcome home parade for the UVA baseball team :( hubby wasn't able to get off work early. Oh well. Hopefully it will be on the news :)

message 3282: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Seriously Stephanie !! With a broom !! Thats hilarious .. I usually kill them with news paper or any kind of paper I find around, I guess we have a lot because our yard is in the middle of the house .. Not sure if it is a yard but its an open space with no roof and the rooms are all around it.
Sorry to hear about the parade :( maybe another time !

Tasha try a trap cage, put something inside that would attract it and when it walks in the cage would trap it in .. Totally safe and you can set it free far away from the house.

thanks for that idea we have a flat part to our roof above the extension of the house. We will get a trap cage this weekend :)

message 3284: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Hope you catch it fast before it makes any serious damage ;)

message 3285: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Thanks, CFDeeDee :)
Of course with a broom, lol! I don't want to touch it while it's still alive :) they freak me out, lol! I googled how to get rid of them and one of the options was: if you want to catch it and then release it outside, you can catch it with a jar but that usually ends up with a broken jar and a lot of screaming :)
I thought that was funny because that would be me :)

My first response was "build a fire", but I am sure you don't want to hurt it.

Entice it out with some food and close it up when he comes out?

message 3287: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Me too Cherie except you don't need the fire just smoke. I was stuck thinking of a super smoke maker with little heat and fire needed

Yes, they are a little smaller than a horse fly, and have a nasty bite.

Horse Fly:

Deer fly:

message 3292: by Tasha (new)

Tasha ew, the deer fly looks like a wasp.

message 3293: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We have deer flies up the wahzoo arpund here. If your around the woods or water or swamp. Not so much the beach but say a lake surrounded by woods. Especially if your sweaty they love that and I hear wearing the color blue. If you're lucky they'll get your arm but if you have long hair they'll get under it to nail your neck. Anywhere theres bare skin but if you jist have on a tshirt they can get you right through the shirt. They're aggressive and unlike a lot of wasps and such which need to be provoked deer flies will just eat you alive as they say. If you aren't near wooded or swampy wet areas they are never an issue. We have woods and wet areas all over around here. There are deer flies but I've never met a dear fly

message 3294: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments You'll have a nice quarter size welt for several days from those little nasties

message 3295: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @Stephanie: a jar would work better for little bugs that fly slow and yet you don't seem to catch them, you just move the jar as slow as they're and it'll get inside peacefully.

@Travis: that sounds really scary .. Like they're attacking someone in a big group!

message 3296: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Yes, most definitely, but the jar would have to be a rather big jar and I would have to be able to be far away from the bug.
I know some bugs do great things for gardens, plants, eat other bugs, etc. but they still creep me out :) I can handle caterpillars though :) that's pretty much it, lol!

I'm not familiar with tiger balm, I'll have to look it up! I use lemon, lavender, and peppermint for allergies sometimes, but it just isn't strong enough for my horrid allergies so I end up using pharmaceuticals.
