Sarah | 18550 comments We have the same laws about discrimination but it's all still asked. not sure if it's mandatory or not. the information is asked for so they can ensure that everyone has equal opportunities. I guess some companies have quotas - I don't know.

Wow! Those laws don't apply here in India. DOB is pretty standard question to fill in.

message 2953: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I know that many companies make it optional to answer the race/language sort of questions on an application, but I also know that some places just set your app aside if you don't answer them. Kind of crummy from all directions.

Age I get, but the rest...not so much, unless you don't speak the predominant language for where you are applying, what should any of that matter?

message 2954: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Most employers avoid asking those questions to avoid potential law suits if someone is denied a job. But, a lot of companies do recruit people of certain races or sexes to meet affirmative action requirements and to "ensure a diverse workforce." Basically I interpret that as you can discriminate by hiring someone of a certain demographic, but you cannot discriminate by not hiring a person based on their demographics. So, you can give a person a job because she is a woman, but you can't deny her a job solely because she is a woman.

My company sometimes works with employment agencies to try to recruit minority workers, especially if we are working on a government funded projects... then it is usually in our contract that we attempt to recruit minorities.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments In Canada, they can't ask your age, gender, religion, sexual orientation or medical information at time of application. They can ask that you voluntarily provide some of that info (sexual orientation or religion would not be allowed). Employers can do a conditional hire dependent on drug testing if required. Date of birth is always required at time of employment because taxes and pension amounts are based on age. Anyone under 18 or over 70 does not pay Canada Pension Plan. Otherwise, they are required to pay.

message 2956: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Did you know that as an employer you can get discrimination charges by asking an immigrant worker if they're legal. Yet if you have a raid and are found with illegal aliens you get in trouble. That one I never understood. So much easier to be able to ask

message 2957: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Really, Sarah? Wow! They would be all illegal to ask under Aussie law as well.

After you are hired they can ask some of that for statistical purposes (we are always asked if we are of Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander heritage for example). When i got a permanent public service job I had to have a medical, but that was after I accepted the job, and was for workers comp claims. They didn't want you claiming for existing conditions. But it was full on, like peeing in a cup and such.

message 2958: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Maybe I am getting it confused with on application / job acceptance. it's been a while since I've been involved in that process now I'm self employed. I was asked them though at some point though. more i think about it, the more I think it was voluntary information. off to read up on the laws here now.

I don't understand this either Travis.

message 2960: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Right well I've checked our laws with regards to application forms and it would seem we are actually more in line with what happens for you guys in the US/AUS than I thought. Things can be asked if you go through to a second interview stage and/or offered the job. Age is different to the other protected characteristics and employers can employ based on age if they can "objectively justify" it. They can ask you to complete a "monitoring form" which ask for details of the protected characteristics for statistical reasons and to help see who is under-represented but it is separate to the application form and doesn't get taken in to account when applicants are chosen (yeah right!). You can choose to tick "prefer not to say" to each question though or you can just not fill it out. So this is all revelationary to me - I've got annoyed in the past with the questions asked of me but I've ALWAYS completed them thinking I needed to in order to even get past the application process. How wrong was I?! I am so pleased that I mentioned the DOB thing here as I have learnt a lot through this discussion.

Sunny day today and I need to go get water, get rid of rubbish and empty our waste tank (nice!), so I have a mate coming over to help me drive the boat up to the disposal point as I've never single handed before and I have to go through a swing bridge which is not possible to do by yourself. If I had attempted it, I might have been waiting around for a very long time for another boat to come along and for me to tag along. At least it's sunny so it should be a nice little jaunt. My partner is jealous he won't be able to go for the trip as he has to go to work.

Most employers are now required to have new employees complete a federal I-9 Form (citizenship status) and complete e-verification of social security numbers before they begin work. There is probably a minimum number of employees before this is a requirement though. I just know we have to do that at my company. If e-verification is not completed within three days of the hire date, we are in violation of laws and are potentially faced with fines.

The I-9 form is ridiculously strict. If an employee accidentally writes his name First, Middle Initial, Last, we have to shred it and have him redo it with Last, First, MI. The dates must be written MM/DD/YYYY. If you write 6/11/15, we have to make you do the form over and write 06/11/2015. If the government decides to audit your I-9's, there are penalties if they find these or other little mistakes.

message 2964: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Sarah, what is a swing bridge? Sounds like a lovely day for a boat ride, enjoy!

How often do you have to empty the waste tank in a boat like yours? My husband and I lived in our camper for a while during the time we were remodeling our house... the black water had to be emptied about once per week, but the grey water tank was probably three times per week.

We get that here too. I was setting up a new client yesterday and was mystified as to why the government showed a credit in his GST account. When I looked closely, he had filed his 2014.07.01 to 2014.09.30 quarter as 2014.07.31 to 2014.09.30. The government didn't know what to do with the money because that is not a valid quarter for him!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Argh, I'm stuck at work :( There has been a train accident (nothing serious, a train hit a lawnmower or something) this afternoon at 3.30. First they said there would be no trains until 5.30, then 7.30, now it's 9.00. It's almost 6.30 right now. They arranged for buses, but that is always such a mess. For every 4 full trains that arrive at the train station, filled up with hundreds of people in rush hour, there is one bus that fits 50.

Wow! That's horrid. I wish we had a better public transit system where I live, but at the same time I can't imagine giving up my car.

message 2969: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Sorry you are stuck at work, Peggy :( no fun at all! Hopefully you get out soon!

We are having a high of 93 degrees F today ( 34 degrees C) a little humid but not too bad today. Our patio is shaded so Blake and I are hanging out. Me reading while he takes a nap on the ground :) we had a couple of dogs walk by (on leash) with their owners and Blake was good and stayed and didn't bark at them :) i think as along as the other dog isn't yipping at him then he could care less about them.

About to head to dentist for 6 month cleaning and check up. I'm nervous because last time the cleaning wasn't very comfortable for me. Depending on how it goes this time, I may start requesting the nitrous or whatever.

They most definitely are a pain! I'm not sure if they actually solved anything or not though. If an illegal alien really wants to work, they can get real social security numbers and fake id's that allow them to manipulate the system.

That sucks, Peggy. Do you know anyone that could give you a ride home so you don't have to wait on the busses? If you have to wait, it sounds like you may be there all night. :(

message 2977: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I called a friend who lives close by and we spent some hours chatting on her balcony. The train problems turned into quite a good thing :)

I guess it was one of those big machine mowers. Maybe it got stuck on the rails?

The train usually goes well and I like it to unwind and read after a day at work. With a car I would be stuck in traffic every day.

Good luck at the dentist tj!

message 2978: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments @KimeyDiann - a swing bridge is a bridge which crosses the canal. it's too low for a boat to go under so it you have to manually push it open (pivots on a horizontal axis) for the boat to go through then close it behind after.

As for tanks, there is no grey waste tank, washing up and shower water goes straight in to the canal so have to use economic friendly products. As for the toilet waste, it depends on how much you use it ;-) generally every 3-4 weeks as it's a big tank.

I had a great day out and about on the boat in the sun. And I managed not to get sunburn which is good.

Annoying you were stuck Peggy. At least it was a lawnmower and not animals or people. hope you get home soon.

Sarah | 18550 comments Damn predictive text.

message 2980: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I don't think I've ever seen a bridge like that, Sarah. Is it difficult to maneuver the boat through?

@Peggy, isn't it wonderful to turn a frustrating situation into a happy one?! :)

message 2981: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments This is one of the swing bridges I went through today (not my picture). On the left of the bridge there is a long lever which you push against to swing the bridge open. If there are two people, then one would open the bridge while the other drives boat through so it's pretty straightforward. but if there is only one person doing it, then it's tricky because if you cross the bridge to operate it (can only be operated from one side) you're then stuck on the wrong side of the canal to where boat is moored. so generally you have to hope that another boat comes by so they can operate the bridge for you or a kind passerby.

message 2982: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Wow! Sarah, it's completely fascinating to me that you are doing that. You may have mentioned it earlier in this thread, but how long are you going to be living on the boat?

message 2983: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments @Kandice - the boat is our home now. We bought it in December, moved out of our flat and in to the boat in February. So we will be living on it for the foreseeable future. It's one hell of an experience that's for sure.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Sarah: That is beautiful! We definitely don't have anything like that in my little corner of the world. But we also don't have any canals here, just rivers and creeks.
Is the pass as narrow as it appears, or is it just the angle of the picture?

@CFDeeDee: I'm so sorry for your loss. Best wishes to you and your family in this difficult time. *hugs*

message 2991: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I would like to add my sympathy CFDeeDee.

message 2992: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments It's much narrower as you go through the bridge then opens up more. I'd estimate it's about 14 foot wide at the bridge. I think swing bridges and lift bridges (similar to the swing bridge but you have to lift it up to allow boat through) to be a canal thing. I'll update my photobucket narrowboats album and post a link of some of the things nearby.
