Sarah | 18550 comments We used to live in a basement flat - i guess it used to be a basement before converted in to flats. We did have a huge garden with it. The problem was It was pretty dark at the front and damp was an issue.

Definitely move Janice. While moving is a pain, you'll be much happier in a new place over where you are now.

LOL, Peggy, but I second the thoughts. I say move Janice and get some piece of mind. If I weren't 2K miles away, I would help you move. :)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Definitely go for the patio apartment Janice.

message 2554: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Patio ?! I never heard of that before !!
I think I'll use my BFF Google to understand what that is, on the other hand moving could be pretty hard, but it also could be fun .. Good luck ;)

message 2555: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Where are you from CFDeeDee? Just curious. Google is great but we're always happy to explain things too. A patio Is an area in the garden which is paved with slabs and it might have a table and chair set on it to enjoy the sun in the summer.

message 2556: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'll keep on with the patio chants! Patio! Sounds very nice, Janice.

That was so my thought. You could have Bob in the basement!

When I was in Edinburgh in 2013, I noticed there were heaps! I found it very strange, but wrote it off as one of those quirky European things.

Courtyard is what we would say. If that helps.

message 2560: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments A courtyard to me would have walls around it.

message 2561: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited May 28, 2015 06:11AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments This would have walls or fences around it though, right? As in a private garden/space for a table and coffee drinking and washing hanging. You're not just getting a patch of pavers out in the street?

message 2562: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie We have a patio :) it is a cement slab and has fencing so no one can come up to the patio door.

message 2563: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments True Rusalka. My parents have a small patio in their garden and the whole garden is fenced in but if the whole garden was just paved then I'd probably call that a yard or courtyard.

Stephanie Wanted to share so photos from the weekend at Arlington National Cemetery:

This is John F Kennedy's grave with the eternal flame

His brother Robert F Kennedy's grave (I wrote a bio paper on him my junior year of high school. We had to pick someone to write a bio about and it had to be 8 pages typed).

CFDeeDee @Sara: I'm from middle east ^.^" it might sound strange to some people .. We just call it garden around here, I don't think we have a special name for it !! The pictures on google looks great, even the way you described it :D

@Rusalka: I thought courtyard is used only for a play ground like a football courtyard !!

message 2566: by Janice, Moderator (last edited May 28, 2015 12:23PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments This would be similar to what I will have.

This is a typical balcony on an apartment building. I would be on the ground floor, so patio is a better word for it. There's enough room for a small table, couple of chairs and a barbeque. I could have plants! Flowers! Oh, so excited! I'll post pictures once I'm moved.

ETA - oh! The Home Depot is across the street where I could buy plants, flowers, and patio furniture.

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Lovely pictures, Stephanie!

message 2568: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Nice Janice! I'm excited for you. Keep us updated.

Not weird at all CFDeeDee. As an international group we come up against words all the time we don't know what they mean. I love finding out what words people use to describe things. We have a thread called YLTO Glossing the Glossary which you might find interesting and funny to read which talks about some of the different names we have for the same object.

Janice, when do you plan to move? Are you gonna have the chance of enjoy this summer in your new patio?

message 2570: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee @Janice: That sounds really good, I already can picture a nice afternoon, little bit cloudy but not too much, a cup of coffee, a plate of cookies, few yarn balls and a crochet hook, and a lovely book to read .. I would enjoy that pretty much !!
Hope you do as well ..

@Sara: Ooh I never thought of reading it !! I dunno why but I'm only stuck on few topics to reply and catch on you guys .. I know it sounds stupid, but I feel like I'll miss up with lot of things !! Just a feeling thought !!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice, you could just walk over to Home Depot and sit on their patio furniture and hang out in the garden section, then you would not have to spend any money.

Our Home Depot in Hillsboro is right next door to Lowes. I could spend a whole weekend just wandering around in both places.

message 2573: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Thanks all :) I love sharing pictures :)

I love Home Depot and Lowes! The smell walking in is my favorite :) my dad used to frame houses so it reminds me of my childhood when I would visit him on job sites. He mostly just does remodeling now :)

It's available August 1st, so there will be ample chance to sit out and enjoy the weather. Cleo will be able to come out with me too. I've been so afraid to let her outside with the heavy traffic here.

@Cherie - you're a genius! Walmart is just down the street as is Solo Liquor, Boston Pizza, and Hyundai All are within walking distance. When I take my car in for servicing, I can walk home and not have to wait for their shuttle.

@Rusalka - Lowes is furniture.

message 2579: by Susan (new)

Susan Guard | 695 comments I've got to thank you guys! I've been catching up on this thread and absolutely laughing myself silly over here. I find myself wanting to hang out with Janice and Cherie in the garden section of Home Depot and Lowes and I want old Rugby League players to yell at me about shorts. Oh my.

message 2580: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Rusalka - Lowes is just like Home Depot but more upscale Yuppish. Almost the same layout but more expensive. Like Home Depot is for DIYers on a budget and Lowes is more Weekend Warriors with money to spend. I can never find anyone from Customer Service in Lowes, but Home Depot always has someone to help answer questions, cut wood, and get stuff down off top shelves, if needed.

My B-I-L and sister in Tennessee work for HD as installers. They pretty much do everything but install carpeting. They hate that. They especially love kitchen and bathroom remodels.

message 2581: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments We don't have Home Depot either. But furniture stores I can get, so if Lowes is furniture store that makes sense. So Home Depot is more of a hardware store with flat pack kitchens and a gardening section and the like?

message 2582: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments We have Home Depot and Lowe's here, one opposite the other on the same street. Both are hardware stores, where you find tools, lumber, paint, electric and plumbing stuff, etc., and also bathroom and kitchen furniture, gardening furniture, plants, gardening tools, appliances, etc. I agree HD is better. We always end buying there. Here they have truck rental too. They also hold a workshop once month with easy DIY activities for kids.

message 2583: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie And both stores have that amazing lumber (wood) smell :-)

message 2584: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Our equivalent would be B&Q or Wickes. I prefer B&Q is it's set up better for retail customers but is more expensive. I like the light and doorbell section - both favourites from when I was a kid.

message 2585: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Don't forget Homebase Sarah ;) I can't stand that place. Our local one is pretty awful, it's always really busy but you hardly ever seem to be able to find what you went in there for.

message 2586: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Great photos Stephanie! Thanks for sharing!

message 2587: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Oh yes Homebase. It never springs to mind when I need anything diy.

message 2588: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie There was a store called Homebase in my hometown. It was also a hardware store like Home Depot. They didn't last long in Spokane but then Lowe's took its place, which I thought was weird.

message 2589: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Hhhmmm those home places sound very strange .. Its interesting to know about them !!

message 2590: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We have similar stores here. Different chains are usually next to or across from each other as well.

Where do you go if you need to paint the walls or plan to do some other DIY-stuff, CFDeeDee?

message 2591: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We have the big guys lowes and home depot. Plus smaller whites lumber, state street hardware. 84 lumber. Watertown builder supply. Aubuchon hardware. Farneys. Lowville farmers coop. Od greene. A couple places names I can't remember. Then yhere are the flooring stores and paint stores amd other specialty stores that are for only 1-2 products amd just lumber yards got 2 of them. These are all within a 15 mile radius of me. For a small populated area I never thoughy about how many places we have. A lot of building goes on around here must be

message 2592: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I see I see. We have Bunnings (Warehouse, but who has time for the second word), and Magnet Mart. They are owned by different companies, and they don't tend to compete in the same place. You have one or the other in a suburb/area, not both.

message 2593: by Peggy (last edited May 29, 2015 07:01AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Funny, here they tend to stick together. Towns generally have just one, but in cities there are areas outside the centre where all these huge stores (although probably small compared to the ones in the US) are. In my city it's quite small, there are two hardware stores, two (cheap) furniture stores, two supermarkets and a garden centre. Other cities have up to 50 clustered together, all kinds of hardware stores, IKEA and similar stores, but also furniture stores specialised in couches or beds. Those are places you do not want to be on Saturday, Sunday, or national holidays when the shops are open!

In the next 6 days my city (not so big with 55.000 people) will receive 4600 Chinese tourists, of which 1100 will come tomorrow. They are brought here in 30 buses to visit a shopping outlet centre (discounted but still ridiculously expensive stuff from A-brands, from adidas to Versace - I hate the place), that is extremely popular with the Chinese and Germans. Apparently these 4600 Chinese are brought here by their employer, they had the choice between Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, and our outlet centre..

edit: oh, apparently they didn't have to choose, they go to all these places. When will my employer do the same?

message 2594: by Tasha (new)

Tasha wow, that is really interesting Peggy! I guess the businesses love the visits.

message 2595: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm sure they do indeed.

I find the whole Chinese-thing so interesting. There's also a dinner party tomorrow for all 4500 at the same time! I can't even get my head around how that is logistically possible, to prepare and serve food to that amount of people at the same time. And there's also going to be a picture taken of all of them. How will 4500 people fit on one photo?!

message 2596: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I saw a thing the other day. Coukd have been fake I can't say. Told about border oatrol or something similar finding 51 chinese men in a 6 person mini van

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I saw it here, Travis:

http://www.infobae.com/2015/05/20/173...

I wonder if it's real or if they were entering the van through the other side, since it can't be seen in the video.

Stephanie It's a Harry Potter weekend on ABC Family :) I own all of the movies and books but I still love watching the movies when they come on TV :)

message 2600: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee I'm not really sure Peggy !! We have small stores for those stuff but the biggest I guess its Home Centre !! But I don't think they have painting walls stuff maybe wall papers but not wall paint !!

My sister is currently reading the series Stephanie, she's collecting a very nice cover series .. I watched the 1st and 2nd movies and read the whole series long ago "translated copy", ever since I never bothered watching the rest of the movies cuz of the way the book ended it all up !! It felt kinda lame !!

I wish I could go out and buy a book but we had a car accident couple days ago and now the car is being fixed .. No car till 4 more hours !!
I need to buy a book so I could feel good ^.^"
A new book always does the trick in fixing my mood :P
