Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Some of us prescribe to the American format (Month Day Year). Others to the Canadian (Day Month Year). I deal with this every day and it drives me crazy. I will get a till slip with the date 02-04-15 and I have no idea whether it's Feb 4 or Apr 2. Vendors use whatever format they prefer.

Personally, I prefer Month-Day-Year because that's the way we say it. We say, "Today is May 19." We don't say "Today is 19 May". We should write the way we talk. There should be some consistency in the way dates are displayed. Rant of the day over. Tune in again tomorrow.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments On official paperwork if it doesn't show format which often it does I just write the month out yo be safe

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Congrats, Samantha!

I wish we had those many weekends here. In my profession, we only get Sundays off and festivals are few and far between (in terms of holidays). If we have three holidays at a stretch, one gets cancelled because hospitals can't be shut down for three days in succession.

I haven't been in here since a while and I have reasons to back me up. I went for an interview and got the job. I am now working as a full time Clinical Psychologist/ Lecturer at a reputed hospital/academic institution.

I also did my final doctoral committee presentation yesterday and have been awarded with writing permission. So I will be starting work on that front soon. And hopefully if all goes well, I should be submitting my thesis by August end.

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Thank you so much, Stephanie, Lisa and Peggy.

When are you finishing, Peggy?

message 2358: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments The plan was to have it all finished by May 31. I'm not going to make it though, so now it's June 26. I got the introduction written and the two final papers nearly ready to be submitted. That leaves the discussion, which I can hopefully finish end of next week so that my supervisor has time to give me feedback and I have some time left to make changes and put it all together. And then off on a well-deserved holiday! ;-)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I LOVE when this thread is SO hot! Unfortunately I can't sit and write all the answers I'm thinking of! It's one of my sons birthday, so I'm pretty busy.

But this news deserves a break: CONGRATULATIONS, PRAGYA! We are proud of you!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Thank you! He's turning 6. He and my 7 year old daughter had such a great dialog yesterday! It was something like:

She: You should cut your hair, so you don't look like a psycho anymore.
He: What's a psycho?
She: A really crazy person.
He: I thought that was a teenager.

Way to go Peggy! You are almost there!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Grarts Pragya! wonderful news. and two thesis parties coming up!

on the month thing, we say it both ways. but 19 may is more common. sorry Janice.

I had to teach my replacement how to write the date the other day on a letter. I would have been fine with the American or our way. But instead got 14 Thursday May 2015.
What?

message 2366: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie At my old job before we moved to Virginia, I would write on the sign in sheet for students: The day, Month, date then year: Tuesday May, 19th, 2015 for example :)

Congrats Pragya.

Love your kid's conversation Sandra.

I started at my new premises yesterday. It was a mixed day. Clients all turned up which was a plus but trains were all messed up so I arrived just in time all dishevelled and felt like I could do with getting on the couch. Going to leave earlier today. just you watch the trains running smoothly. thanks Lisa for mentioning the potential strike as I didn't know about it and it may cause problems for me getting to work. I will watch how the situation progresses.

Tasha Wow, so much going on...

Pragya, congrats!! Great news. :)

Peggy, you are so close too. I'm impressed. That is so much work.

Berit, congrats on the big step. I remember when my stepson (barely) graduated high school. It felt really weird.

Travis, and I remember when my son started Kindergarten...very weird too. Too weird, in fact, that we ended up homeschooling the next year. ;)

Samantha, I meant to say thanks to you and our husband as well. I am so appreciative of those who serve and their families.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My wife was home schooled. That will not be the path of our children. My school is very good for a small school. The community always supports any improvements that the school wishes no matter the tax cost. My MIL says she will pay to send him to Catholic school. God forbid he go to public school. Oh did I mention her husband is a public school teacher. Don't get me started on that. And no way is he going to Catholic school. Even if I was Catholic it'd be no and since I'm not it's definitely no. My alma mater is still a small town type schoil no police in school like the bigger surrounding schools. Still more of a family community

message 2377: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Just curious, did your wife have a bad experience with her homeschool stuff? Just wondering cause I can't tell from your comment if it's no bc it was bad or no bc your SD is good. :)

message 2378: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I have a good school district for one. Neither of us is home anyway. And her parents were more of the isolate and imprison the child home school. Which I can tell by your comments you get ypur kids out interacting and enjoying other activities. It's the it's a big world we better shelter the child and raise in a bubble attitude I don't agree with.

message 2379: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments Travis, I understand about kids growing too fast. My youngest finishes Kindergarten tomorrow. I grew up going to a small town private school mainly because our public school was terrible. My husband grew up Catholic (no longer practicing) and went to Catholic school. However, our town has a good public school and so my kids go there. My oldest son has ADHD and some behavioral issues. The requirements and structure this year was causing a lot of issues. He went from honor roll to failing because he hates it so much. So we made the difficult decision to pull him and finish the year at home. We have literally explored almost all options so I can see all sides. Good luck!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments School really isn't a one size fits all type thing. Really isn't a right or wrong way to do it a lot comes down to personal oreference or what is best for the child. All forms of education are both successful and fail depending on the case.

message 2384: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) I personally could not homeschool, do not have the patience for it. I think it is really the motivation behind the homeschooling that matters, if you want to keep them away from the real world I don't think it is a good idea but if you're in a bad school district, your child has special needs, or you just are good at it I say go for it! b

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments With my wife there were 7 siblings. They all left asap. The local college offered a school for high school seniors you went to college and got your last year of school amd at least part of first year college. They all did this ezcept one that went ibto marines on 18th birthday. So 4 live out of state. One doesn't speak to parents. One is 18 anf still at home and my wife who live 90 minutes away and sees once in a while, so all in all I do not think they enjoyed their home school experience.

message 2387: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments My class was the largest, although I think there has been one bigger ever to go through. We had 52 and I think there has been a 54 since then. They had to make extra classes and hire more teachers for my class as they try to keep classes, especially in elementary at 15-18 students. I think I sometimes had 24-25 in a class, but that is rare and the teachers always struggles dealing with so many students to give the amount of attention required to each student. This year graduates 35 kids. Yet the size of the school is about double what is was when I started. Probably double the space for 1/3 less students. Like I say they are nuts to keep up with technology amd giving these kids all the opportunities available. I don't think you could find auch better school district, regardless of what your attitude may have been while attending. We never knew what we had back then just took it for granted

message 2388: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I had friends that were homeschooled and liked it. I grew up in public school and liked it (as much as I could like school anyways;) ). I say kudos to those that have the patience to homeschool their kiddos because I know I couldn't do it.

We went to a cavern over the weekend and did a guided tour! It was really cool!

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) My son's graduating class is 786 kids, and I think they have got a really good education, but they are also good students, so that helps.

message 2390: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments k-12 is maybe 500 students total. Not sure theres that many. But you're right it really depends on the students. I have moticed the last few years, in our district, the students really seem to be more focused on their education. Even today for the hour I was at school I didn't see me walking around. Me being the one wandering the halls or sitting in the library staring blankly at magazines. Actually looked like kids getting an edycation up there

message 2391: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Also Berit, unless things have changed, I believe NY and California always have had the highest axademic standards and mandatory testing in the country so schook is probably quite similar. No offense to anyone else I'm sure there are good schools to be found everywhere.

message 2392: by Tasha (last edited May 20, 2015 12:47PM) (new)

Tasha I see what you mean, Travis. Her experience doesn't sound good at all. My kids are definitely exposed to the world and we are always out running around doing stuff. We are very relaxed in our homeschooling stuff, we basically do what's called 'unschooling'. It works for my kids and our family so that's what's key, I think. It needs to work for the family. If my kids wanted to go to school they could and they know that...they choose not to I think bc they love our unschooled lifestyle. It also helps that we have a huge homeschooling community in the area. The SD in our area is ranked pretty high (both my husband and I went there as well as my stepson) but we still have chosen to homeschool. For many reasons.

BTW, homeschool can be as hard or as fun as you want to make it. It's really not as hard as most people think and it's been (for us) the best thing that has happened. That being said, it all comes down to so many factors and ulitmately what works for each family. I love it though and can't ever go back to the old way. :)

message 2393: by Tasha (last edited May 20, 2015 12:15PM) (new)

Tasha Travis, I think your wife's experience is what has given homeschooling a bad name and the way it's still portrayed in the media. From my experience it has evolved so much. I know there are people who still homeschool that way (sadly) but there are so many different styles on the spectrum these days. Just saying so that people know that it's not just that way anymore. I hate that the media still protrays it that way!

Hospitals close on holidays? This blows my mind. What about patients that need round the clock care?

I have several friends that are nurses and in management at a local hospital and it never shuts down, ever. Not even in severe weather when people can't get out of their driveways like this past winter. And the only way they are off work on a holiday is if it happens to fall on their off day or they take vacation.

Do the emergency rooms at least stay open?

message 2396: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie It is the Grand Caverns in Grottoes, VA. There is a fall festival there on October 3rd that we might go to. Our tour guide said that they have a dance (ball) inside the cavern then. Tickets are limited to that though so not sure if we will be able to attend that part. People, I guess, dress up in period clothing when they attend the ball.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments That sounds really neat, Stephanie. I've been to some of the caverns and caves in the Smokey Mountains, but that has been probably more than 12 years ago. I'd like to do some of those tours again.

Amanda, I don't think any hospitals here in the States close for anything. I never thought it would be different in other countries, even those with government run healthcare... but Pragya's comment really has me curious if it is different.
