Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I hope you feel better tomorrow, Rusalka!

I am taking an early lunch to catch up on GR posts. Other than that, working from home full time is hard for me. I miss seeing all of the people.

Sarah | 18550 comments I second the sleep commands and I'll throw in a wine command Rusalka. Take it easy and don't be too hard on yourself. the first few days are all about finding your feet. Having a nice office makes a big difference.

Tasha The wine command sounds like a good one. ;)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So this is palindrome week. At least to US people who properly write dates as month/day/year. Same forward and backwards
5/10/15
5/11/15
5/12/15. Etc. Take out the slashes and all week is same forward and back

Roz | 4530 comments Boy, you go away for a few days and miss so much in this thread. I just got back from visiting family in Austin Texas ( my grandson's third birthday). Had a great time. About twenty minutes into the return flight the woman in front of my husband jumped out of her seat and ran half way down the aisle. She claimed she saw a scorpion. No one else did. So the steward spent another twenty minutes down on his hands and knees looking. No luck.

I'm glad all the sickies and pets are doing well.
Janice, your vacation sounds great. I've never been to Banff or anywhere in western Canada. Most of our Canadian vacations were in the Maritimes, or Ontario where I still have family.
Congratulations on the new position, Rusalka. Starting a new job is always stressful and exciting at the same time.
Facebook: I joined in order to find relatives I'd lost track of since leaving Canada almost 40 years ago. Found quite a few. But I don't really spend much time on it. I really don't feel the need to know what someone is doing (with pictures) every minute of a person's day. Do I need to see a picture of someone cutting veggies for dinner? And the rants (what went on at the gym, drivers, the low quality of the bread at the local bakery) drove me nuts.
Tractors that auto steer, Travis? Do you have to be on it or can you just program it do what you want in the field and go have a beer while it does the job? That would be great!
Getting lost is the worst. We recently went to Washington DC and got lost going to a family affair. It was awful. Then a cousin suggested the Waze GPS program. It's free and tied to your phone. I love it.

That's it. I'm done. Goodnight.

message 2261: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes this is a busy thread Roz. Glad you had a great time in Austin. I couldn't help but laugh about the scorpion but I can imagine it was probably a little scary for those who don't like them (and the woman in that seat) and frustrating for those around her that new there probably couldn't be one.

It's my last week at my therapy rooms after being there for 9 years. I'm moving to a clinic closer to the train station to reduce my commute time. I am both excited about the new month and a little sad. I've also decided to stop providing massage etc., just focusing on my hypnotherapy clients now. The new clinic overlooks Bristol Harbour so basically my life is all about boats now :-)

message 2262: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments At this point Roz a peraon needs be on board to lift implement at end of field and turn around. Also watch for mud holes and such. 10 years down the road who knows. My cousin has auto steer as well as a vsriable rate planter. Planter will change both fertilizer rate and seed rate based on soil tests and yield data. Every year as more data gets collected the better these rates will match up to field. Also has auto shut off so planter won't cross plant an already planted section especially useful since most fields end up having a triangle section at the end. If there is only room for 3 rows of corn the olanter will shut his other 13 rows off. Don't ask hiw it all works because he has the crop consuktant program the gps and enter all this data in it

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I don't know why this country makes such a fuss over immigrant labor. I am at about 20% of people I hire actually show up for even a day. All I look for is part time helo so I can't speak for full time workers the latest one has no job currently. Was too busy last week. Facebook posts show he was riding dirt bike. Couldn't be here mon. Or tues. But would be here today. Today is here amd facebook shows me he is turkey hunting since he's obviously not here. There is a difference between wanting to work and actually working, but if youre not going to go to work pkeasr don't complain you have no money. A good guatemalan wants to work 6 12 hour days a week. They are leaving friends and family to come here to work and only have a certain amount of time here based on their Visa. They don't come here to steal American jobs we bring them here because they actually show up and work

Totally agree. We have the same arguments over here about refugees and immigrant workers. They are stealing our jobs, etc. Nope. They are doing jobs Australians don't want to do, they work harder and longer than us, and they want to earn/work as much as they can to get money for their families/before visas expire/as thanks to a place they are safe.

I was talking to my family down on the vineyard in March, and they were saying they have stopped using friends and family to help pick. They had to provide accommodation and food, and then only half the crop got picked, if that. Some people treating them as only a B&B not a job. They pay pickers now, some on visas, some Aussie immigrants, and they get everything picked in less than half the time and half the cost.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Thanks all. Not really having a whinge, more explaining why I am a bit absent. Wine and sleep is being actioned.

In fact, went to bed at 10pm last night, with a book. Lexx came in an hour later with me with my book half open and soundly asleep. Apparently he pried the book out of my hands and put the bookmark in, and I did not stir at all. Dead to the world.

message 2267: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Travis, I agree completely with your comments on the immigrant work force. They are wonderful and work so hard. I appreciate them so much. My yard wouldn't be half as nice without their hard work. We had a friend of my husband (this guy had a landscape business) doing work one year and it was total halfass job.

Tasha Rusalka, at least you are getting some good sleep!

message 2269: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I totally did not realize this week was palindrome week! That is two things I love, numbers and palindromes! LOL.

My husband called a little while ago and said that the water heater in his mother's house busted and flooded the entire house! We have no idea why. He called the insurance company and they told him not to clean anything up and they would call him back. After they finally called back they told him he could mop up the water after taking lots and lots of pictures, but not to touch anything else.

Thankfully her house is on a concrete foundation and she does not have wood flooring or carpet. The main concern will be how much water got into the walls. I have no doubt mold will be a problem unless they can get it dried out. An insurance adjuster is supposed to contact us tomorrow to asses the damage.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments ouch, Kimey! That's so bad! You'll have some cleaning to do there.

message 2274: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I was woken up this morning by my partner as he was getting ready to go to work so that I could look out the window. On the opposite bank of the canal, sat a duck with all her ducklings nestled under her. It was so cute even through bleary eyes. I'm up and awake now and they are still sat that sheltering from the rain. It's raining a lot here. I'm going to get drenched on the way to work.

Sorry to hear about the leak KimeyDiann. Hope things are rectified quickly.

That's a reference to my maybe favorite palindrome from the Weird Al song above - do geese see god ?

A Toyota's a Toyota.

Never odd or even.

Was it a car or a cat I saw?

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments On Monday we went to the town where we will look at a house for sale next week, just to have a look around, see what the town is like. It has a small river running through it, and a bit of nature in the town centre, and we went for a stroll there and the first thing we saw was a mom duck with her ducklings, crossing the path in front of us. I was sold!

It was such a hard loss since they were up 3 games to 1. I guess they just have a hard time getting passed the second round :( hopefully they will go all the way next season..but for now I am cheering for any team against the Rangers :-)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments This is book related, but amusing. I read A Game of Thrones just in time to borrow my friend's set of series one of the tv series. Actually, she lent it to me voluntarily even though she hadn't watched it herself.

She bought me season two for Valentine's Day. I haven't read A Clash of Kings yet and I wanted to wait until I'd read the book before I watched the dvd's. In the meantime, I gave my friend the first season back and she's watched it.

Yesterday, she phoned and asked if she could borrow season two, to which I replied that she could. When she found out I hadn't watched it yet, she didn't want to borrow it. I told her that was silly and she was welcome to borrow it.

"Well, at least take the wrapping off before you give it to me," was her response. LOL!

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments The photo of the geese is so cute. My dad has a pond on his land and every spring he has a pair of geese who make a nest and have their babies. It is fun for the kids to go see the female on the nest and then later to see her swimming with the goslings. There is an island where she nests so we can watch her without disturbing them.

I love the Game of Thrones books and series. I read all the books before the show started and now watch it every week. Although, now the show is getting into some things I don't remember so I may have to reread the last two books. I am glad that you are enjoying them. I will just warn you not to get attached to anyone. The author likes to kill people, even main characters.

Did you know that there is going to be a new one?

message 2295: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm looking forward to the new Mad Max. I thought it might be crap but it has Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in it so I reckon it might be alright. message 2298: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Did anyone watch Wayward Pines on Fox last night? I loved the books, but I think knowing everything that happens sort of took the suspense out of the show for me. I need to watch it with someone who hasn't read the books.

Nurse Pam is much older than I imagined her in the books, but the actress definitely pulled off her creepiness. I don't think I like Matt Dillon as Ethan Burke (main character)... he sort of looked like a zombie in the show last night.

Did anyone else watch? Opinions?

message 2299: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments My boyfriend watched, I saw parts of it when I happened to glance at the tv. Neither of us has read the books. I have to admit that I'm curious about what is going on, although I don't think it's the kind of series I would like. Too confusing and probably too scary ;-)

I am looking forward to Jurassic World too.

Not sure what to make of Mad Max. I like Tom Hardy and some of the early reviews have rated it quite highly but the trailer put me off. I will probably just wait until it comes on to Netflix.
