Watcha Doing? Version 2015
Tasha wrote: "Camilla, I grew up eating Paska at Easter. My family is Russian/Ukrainian orthodox. I don't follow the religion these days but my family still has Paska at easter. I love the stuff. It's so good wi..."Yes, I find it yummy too, although it's so rich you can't eat much.
I found this site on the baska bread. It says "closest relative" is kulich. http://library.ndsu.edu/grhc/foods/re...My grandmother was a German Russian, and she never made this bread that I can recall.
Your dishes sound great Camilla. In the UK Simnal Cake is traditional. It's fruit cake with lots of marzipan on from what I recall. I'm not keen on fruit cake but I love marzipan.
That is funny, we really don't have any kind of traditional Easter dessert, we always eat ham at Easter, but my mom is making ice cream cake, she just bought herself these cool new pans and is itching to use them :-)
Tasha wrote: "Stephanie wrote: "Oooh! Just got home from the working interview at the doggie day care! So much fun getting to interact with dogs :) my dog gave me a sniff down when I got home! Took him for a bit..."Thanks, Tasha :-)
Hubby ordered some bread mixes the other day and we made an apple cinnamon bread in the bread maker. Turned out a little doughy but not terrible:) I love the smell of bread baking!
Would love to try the Mämmi. Don't know if I'd like it or not. The baska type breads sound delicious. We don't have any traditional Easter desserts or other foods for Easter time in my experience. I know some people have ham. I like to make deviled eggs : )
Thank you, Peggy. I don't think they are online as of now. Will send them to you can PM me your email address. :) Good luck for your thesis.Thank you, Berit, Janice and Tasha.
That really is sad, Travis. But I agree with Rusalka. Don't beat yourself up about it.
That's such a wonderful idea, Rusalka - thesis baby. ROFL, that was hilarious!
Wow, chinese!! Go, Esther!
20 years is a lot, Tasha. Go Hawaii if your son permits.
That sounds so yum, Janice. I am drooling. Have fun at the dinner. :)

I think mämmi is certainly an acquired taste; Finns actually love to torture foreign visitors with it. It even looks horrendous...
Many people eat lamb during Easter, as well as eggs. I just made a marinade and put some lamb fillets in it, they will rest in their marinade until tomorrow. This morning we carried our gas grill out after the winter, will grill the fillets tomorrow. I will also try to make French fries myself, have never tried it (always used ready ones) but I bought a deep frying thingy a while ago, so want to try it.
Sarah wrote: "Your dishes sound great Camilla. In the UK Simnal Cake is traditional. It's fruit cake with lots of marzipan on from what I recall. I'm not keen on fruit cake but I love marzipan."I'm the other way round, I like fruit cake (unless it has cinnamon in it) but I can't stand marzipan.
We always have roast lamb for our Easter dinner with some nice veggies. Think we are having sticky toffee pudding for our dessert this year too. Yum yum!

One year for Easter, the butcher put out a beautiful crown roast of lamb. On clearance- someone didn't pick up their special order and it was only $2. I called my husband to ask him to talk to my grandfather to see if he liked lamb, or if I still needed to buy a ham. My husband went absolutely nuts about how disgusting lamb was- and my husband will and has eaten anything. (Bat, tadpole soup, balut, etc. He was in the Navy/Marines.) When I got home- without the lamb- he continued to rant about how revolting lamb is for ages, just to make sure that I never, ever bought it as long as we're married.
Sigh...lamb roasts are so beautiful and cute with the paper hats.
I haven't had Paska or Kulich forever! Need to go source some. Lexx's sister used to make both in her bakery but it's just closed to be reopened in a new location. The problem with this is no Hot Cross Buns this year! I may have to make my own again, but mine never work like hers. But it's not Easter without spicy buns and butter. Yum...Your lamb roasts have hats? Lamb is such an everyday meat over here there isn't a big deal about Easter and lamb. In some cultures it still has the special factor, but really in an Australian household, you're likely to be eating lamb anyway!
Really?? I don't think I've had lamb in forever, I can't remember :-) we seem to eat a lot of chicken, chicken sandwiches, chicken tacos, chicken burritos, chicken quesadillas, chicken nuggets, Well you get the picture ;-)
If you have a roast in Aus, it's pretty much assumed it's lamb. I can't even remember the last time I had roast beef. ...
I think I'm pulling some lamb shanks out of the freezer now for dinner...
We eat a lot of chicken too, just our red meat is more likely to be lamb. We have an awful lot of sheep over here.

I've never had lamb, so do you think my husband would notice if I substituted lamb for beef in a stew?
Ohhhhh. We just use bits of foil lol. We also usually roast bits like the leg or the shoulder, where it doesn't matter if the bones don't look pretty anyway.I'd say you'd be okay. I bought some diced beef and some diced lamb the other day. No idea which was which when I got home. So we had lamb/beef rendang and beef/lamb massaman over the last week. Both were delicious and I have no idea if I got it "right".
Oh! Yes! Hot Cross Buns! I forgot too. I'm going to pick some up on my way out to the kids. Love them toasted, and dripping with melted butter and honey. Come to think of it, any sweet bread is oh so tasty toasted with butter and honey.
I could swear I posted about lamb... that I've never really had lamb. That's it's Alberta beef all the way. Actually, I eat mostly chicken and pork these days.
Sandra wrote: "Learning Chinese sounds as interesting as challenging, Esther."Well, Chinese is different from all the other languages I know. If only because there is not logic link between the written and the spoken. I can't pronounce what I read and do not know and can't write what I hear and don't know... argh... I am getting better I reading as long as I keep to my limited vocabulary. I see hanzi I learned and I recognized them. What kills me is the &"/%!/$! exam where I have to recall them well enough to write them... I am supposed to know about 350 of them now...
The good news is that our national library added a bunch of ebooks in Chinese that seem aimed to toddlers. So I look forward to a summer filled with "fascinating stories" about a rabbit exploring a courtyard or the like.. .
Hmmm, maybe I could bribe Janice to accept these as a series even if they are way too short... it will take me long enough to read them...
Hubby and I had a good day! Drove a few hours from where we live to meet up with some friends of his from when he was stationed in Hawai'i. Went to dinner at Olive Garden to celebrate our anniversary from a few days ago :)
Esther wrote: "Hmmm, maybe I could bribe Janice to accept these as a series even if they are way too short... it will take me long enough to read them..."ROFL. Good luck with that!

That's awesome, Ester. I'm curious what inspired you to take it on? Congrats for your initiative!
I think I'm going to just have to wait for a real-life star trek communicator ;)
Anyone still watching college basketball? I think the final is tonight? I know it is between Duke and Wisconsin. Sadly my bracket did not do well this year. Oh well. Didn't lose any $$ because it was just for fun :) Regular season baseball is now upon us though! Looking forward to having the Braves game on tonight! Free preview of MLB extra innings for a week! YES!
Yay Baseball Season started last night. My poor Cubs lost to the evil Cardinales...Oh well. At least the Tribute to Mr. Cub - Ernie Banks - was wonderful!
Stephanie wrote: "Grr, Cardinals..one of my Braves is with them now..Jason Heyward."Stephanie,
I agree grrrrrrr, Heyward got the better of Jon Lester - scored twice. I hate the Cards.
Berit wrote: "As a big Dodger fan I hate the Cards as well! BTW the Dodgers One today :-)"Wonderful, Berit. My lovable Cubs lost =(
I'm torn as a lifelong from birth Duke fan its great going for another title, but I also like Bo Ryan and this Wisconsin team. Going to try and stay neutral tonight. I said this once before and within 5 minutes I was all Duke. I'll try but no promises. I have been on Dukes side since diapers. 3 decades of a blue blood is hard to break
My brackets got busted early but tonight I'm rooting for Wisconsin ( sorry Travis). And I know you're all going to hate this but I'm a Yankees fan. Don't like A-Rod tho.
Being neutral ended at player introductions. Tyus Jones such a performance for Duke tonight. Now time to buy more Duke gear. For the record I would have been fine if Wisconsin won that was a very even back and forth game and I don't think one team deserved it more than the other. Great performance on both sides tonight.
Ack! Cycling as part of my commute to work for the first time today. Feeling a little scared. Mainly that I won't make it in time to catch the bus, to then catch the train, to then catch another bus, to arrive on time for work. I'm going to allow myself 90 minutes for the bike ride which is probably overkill - it's only 3.5 miles I think.
Good luck Sarah! You'll have plenty of time :)You need to cycle 3.5 miles just to get to the bus stop? How long is your total commute?
lol Sarah. I just worked out what's 5kms away (roughly 3.5miles). Google maps tells me it would take an hour exactly to walk it (about right for when I've gone that direction). On a bike you'll be fine! But better to be safe than sorry the first time. Lexx rides home from work a couple of nights a week. He always rides home so he isn't late for something in case something goes wrong. He usually takes 90mins to ride the 22kms.
He has to provide me with a total number of seen ducks, snakes, echidnas and any other interesting finds.
