Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I thought the same thing Berit, but then the national news covered the fact that there were two in our city http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-03-03... The first run by an acquaintance of mine (with Pudding the Pug), and the librarian in the second is a sister of a friend. Canberra is too small. Both are still going strong, no one's burnt them down since they were covered.

Sarah | 18550 comments We had a very windy night on the boat last night. very noisy and Rocky and we didn't get much sleep. there were waves on the canal. had to fish some things out of the canal that blew off our roof but we're still intact. just as well we moved at the weekend as back where we were parking our car, three trees had blown down blocking access.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments @Esther, sounds an April's Fool to me. A good one for readers!

@Sarah, the library is so beautiful! I'm sorry about the storm that is making your life difficult...

@Rusalka, those library look so good too. Never saw one like the tall one in the first picture.

Now I'm off to do some work...

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I love the old red phonebook converted to a "book box". So awesome.

message 1460: by Susan (last edited Mar 31, 2015 07:00AM) (new)

Susan Guard | 695 comments Love that old red phone booth! I can't remember the last time I saw an actual phone booth and I don't think I've ever seen a red one in person.

Here in my community a local Girl Scout troop has just built a Little Free Library and they are committed to keeping it going. They've been collecting children's books to stock in it. It's been a great project for them.

message 1461: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I love the red phone booth, too! So cool! Thanks for posting photos, Sarah :-)

message 1462: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Are there phone booths anywhere anymore?? It's funny how things change, sometimes without you noticing.

message 1463: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie There was one where I lived in Omaha, Nebraska. It was attached to a restaurant called Spaghetti Works. I don't remember if there was a working telephone in it though ;-)

message 1464: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments This is completely off-topic, but I hate when you get a friend request from someone you don't know at all, I feel bad replying it ignore, it just seems so rude.

message 1465: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Are you talking about goodreads, Berit? I believe you can go into settings and set it up for them to say how they know you. I know how you feel :) that happens with Facebook and Instagram as well:(

message 1466: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie 22 days until we move into our new apartment!! Eek!! I cannot wait!! I went and picked up some boxes from the grocery store so we should be set on boxes! Thankfully we don't have a ton of big stuff to move :)

message 1467: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Stephanie how exciting!! Moving can be exciting and a lot of work, so good luck to you!! All I was saying was I just don't like, pressing the ignore button, I wish it was called something else

message 1468: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I always thought something like You Wish instead of ignore would express my feelings better (for some requests anyway) but that's probably jut as rude. :)

Stephanie Berit wrote: "Stephanie how exciting!! Moving can be exciting and a lot of work, so good luck to you!! All I was saying was I just don't like, pressing the ignore button, I wish it was called something else"

Thanks :)
Yeah, I don't like pressing ignore either..I agree it should be called something else.

message 1470: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments LOL, I love that, you wish :-) at least that one is a bit funny!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Dawn wrote: "I always thought something like You Wish instead of ignore would express my feelings better (for some requests anyway) but that's probably jut as rude. :)"

LOL! I have felt the same way, Dawn. I don't think Ignore is rude. They do not see it. They just do not get a new friend. I always try to click on their link and look to see who they are and try to decide why they may want to friend me. Self promoting authors are the worst!

message 1472: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments I do the same thing, the first thing I check is what groups are they in, if they are in no groups that I'm in, clearly they have no idea who I am, in the beginning I felt bad and excepted friend request from unknown authors, but I have gotten over that.

message 1473: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I check groups (and their comments in said groups) and compare books and read their reviews, check out their friends (particularly mutual ones). Compare amount of books to amount of friends, compare read books to TBR books....

If you don't know someone and haven't made a connection with them, there has to be another good reason to have them as friends!

message 1474: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Cherie wrote: "Self promoting authors are the worst!..."

These are an automatic ignore for me!

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments Sarah wrote: "You gonna go Esther just on the off chance he might be there?"

Right. As if not only he would do this but it would do it in a French speaking location.

On a side note, i wish we could have these little libraries here. I know a cafe try to do a shelf but it did not appear to get much interest...

message 1476: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Pretty sure there is a thread discussing friend requests somewhere - I do remember commenting at some point.

I just put my book down to update my status and couldn't resist checking the unread topics!

Stephanie Happy April Fools Day!

It is also hubby and my's 4 year wedding anniversary :-) yeah, we got married on April Fools Day :-)

message 1479: by Peggy (last edited Apr 01, 2015 04:19AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Congratulations Stephanie!

Yikes, I'm starting to stress out a bit. I'm in the final two months of my PhD, and I still have two papers to finish and the introduction and discussion of my dissertation to write. I thought one of the papers was pretty much finished and ready to send out, but my supervisor thinks I should rewrite it from a different perspective. She has a point, I think it will improve, but that means even more work. She's also trying to convince me to write a short third paper in addition to the other two. I know two months sounds like enough time, and it probably is if all I had to to was write, but if I take into account that my supervisor also needs time to give feedback on everything and I have to make changes, it's not so much. I didn't have many stressful moments during the 4 years of my PhD, but the last three months seem to be making up for it. Okay, back to work!

message 1480: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Peggy, all the people I know who did a PhD have had a CRAZY last few months. I'm not talking only of close people, like friends or my husband, but my husband's students (he advises/supervises as part of his job as a professor). It always seems like too much to do and not enough time. I'm sure it is a lot of work you have to do, but I'm sure you'll figure it out. :) Deep breath, calm down. We are here to support you! We should start planning a big party!

message 1481: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Yay, Peggy! You've got this :-)

message 1482: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Apr 01, 2015 05:24AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Papers are hard. It's one thing writing them apart from the thesis, but along with! ick.

Do you guys have a publication component to your PhDs? Our guys don't have to publish but it makes life a billion times easier if they have a publication or two under their belts when they finish.

They have just brought in PhDs by publications though, where you need to have about 10 or more (not sure on numbers) publications and then write a smaller thesis tying the publications all together.

And the last two months of the PhD is when I have my students sleeping on their office floors and I have to bring them food as they forget to eat. It's stressful as all hell and it's not long. It will be done soon. I can't bring you food (it'll go off in the post), but promise me you'll eat.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Sandra wrote: "We should start planning a big party!

Hells yes! We totally should have a post-submission party, after Peggy sobers up from the real ones. Then we can do it again for Pragya later!

Oh and Peggy, water. Coffee =/= water.

message 1484: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks for the support ladies. I would love a party :D

I'm not sure if the rules are specific for my university/faculty or for all universities in the Netherlands, but we need to have at least 4 papers in there. They do not necessarily need to have been published, but should at least be submitted to a journal. I'll have 6 if I finish these two I'm currently working on. And indeed, write an introduction to all studies in general, and a discussion for tying all studies and findings together, as well as implications and future research ideas.

message 1485: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Oh jesus that's nasty. But good on you for going above and beyond with the extras. Crossing fingers and toes for you. But if you have 4-6 publications, you have to be across your material and thesis. So I can see the method to the madness.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Congrats to you and your husband, Stephanie! I remember we were moving too around our 4th anniversary. Actually 6 days after! How is all the packing going?

message 1491: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Peggy you probably told this before and I missed it, so I'll ask you anyways. In which area are you working?

message 1492: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Belated congratulations for you too Sandra :)

I'm at the Faculty of Psychology, in a group studying eating disorders and obesity. In the past 4 years I have focused on emotional eating. What does your husband do?

message 1493: by Susan (new)

Susan Guard | 695 comments Congratulations, Stephanie!

And congratulations also to Peggy for getting this far with sanity intact! Just keep your focus on the light at the end of the tunnel. One paper at a time... It'll be over soon, hang in there.

message 1494: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Peggy, that sounds so interesting :-) my dad has a PhD in aeronautical engineering, I think I was born in the middle of it all, my mom is the one that typed up his thesis. I avoided any classes with papers like the plague ;-) not my thing. I got my degree in Physical Education, so it was science heavy, and not too much writing for me.

Stephanie, congrats to you as well :-) getting married on April fools day, I love that!

message 1495: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Sandra wrote: "Congrats to you and your husband, Stephanie! I remember we were moving to around our 4th anniversary. Actually 6 days after! How is all the packing going?"

Thank you, Sandra! The packing is um..going:) we didn't unpack a lot of our stuff when we originally moved so we don't have too much packing to do except for kitchen stuff :)
The job I took with the community college earlier in the month ended up not working out for me..I had a pretty bad anxiety attack:( I think I was trying to learn too much at once and then I had to take a test and I get test anxiety so that day did not end well:( oh well!
It has all worked out because I have a working interview with a doggie day camp! I really really want to work with dogs so I am hoping this job pans out and the hours are soooo much better than what the college job was too :)

Thank you for the congrats as well, Susan and Berit:)

message 1496: by Peggy (new)

Thanks Susan!

Thank you for the congrats, Peggy. That was soooo long ago... We have been married 17 years now, and moved 3 or 4 times more since then. :)

My husband is a mathematician. I could never in my life type his thesis! :)
