I noticed that you changed your icon to Flat Tim. I am secretary of The Senior Citizens Club of Plymouth, whose goal it is to keep Seniors active. Your Tim has inspired me to encourage a Flat Stanley Project between a group of school children and these elders.

We are still in th e planning stage. I think it will be a lot of fun for everyone.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Stephanie Sad :(
Just read an article that the co-pilot may have crashed the plane on purpose? Did anyone else see this news?
I hope it is not true:(

message 1403: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments I heard the same thing. It's just still surprises me when people do these things, I just don't understand. On a much much lighter note, I am going prom dress shopping with my daughter today :-)

Hope you have good luck prom dress shopping with your daughter, Berit :)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have just seen about the co pilot on the news. Sadly it looks like it is true, the pilot went to the toilet and asked him to take over and he locked the pilot out of the cockpit and crashed the plane deliberately according to investigators. The black box flight recorder picked up passengers screaming and apparently the pilot was fighting to get back into the cockpit according to the report on the news. Absolutely horrible!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Indeed. It makes me wonder if it was deliberate suicide (and whether that was 'personal' or perhaps because of some extremist beliefs) or whether perhaps he had a psychosis or something.

At the moment they don't think that it was a terror attack as he doesn't appear to have had any links with terrorist organisations. Unless he held extremist beliefs and it was a 'lone wolf' attack.

Hipefully soon! Should be safe after mothers day. We actually had some patches of grass showing yesterday but still is a foot of snow on ground most places around here.

message 1419: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I can't agree with the suicide idea. Takes an incredibly selfish person to take 150ppl with you on your suicide. But we will see. Our news is saying they are combing all his stuff at the moment so who knows what will turn up.

I see two options, and I can't work out which is more terrifying. One it was opportunistic. The captain left the cockpit and he made a spare of the moment choice to do it. Or two, he made the decision ages ago and was waiting for the opportunity to do it.

The thing that kills me about it, is the idea of the captain outside realising exactly what was happening. They say the passengers wouldn't have been able to tell, but the poor pilot!

Oh ouch! I've seen chicken's combs and wattles with frostbite, and that looks nasty, let alone on teats! Do your cows sleep in barns in summer as well? I'm just thinking about cattle here, as I think they usually have a shed or a barn for milking or other acts, but not usually for housing as it doesn't get that cold.

message 1423: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments It all depends. There aren't so many grazing herds anymore. Mine stay in all the time unless it is during their 40 day dry period during nice weather. They have their mattresses and big fans for tunnel ventilation and if the humidity is too high I hose them down 3-4 times a day. They hate going outside usually just stand in back of barn bellering. Why graze when the farmer will just dump the feed in front of you. Plus I have the hoof trimmer in about every 4.5 months so I rarely have a lame or injured cow. I tried grazing for about 3 years and couldn't make it work for me. Truth is somehow through artificial breeding the holstein breed has lost the instinct to graze. Most graziers are looking to normandys or jerseys or jersey/holstein crosses. They love those crosses in Texas becausr they handle the heat better and eat less. So they say.

Other than once a month herd health which is mostly just preg checks we almost never have a vet call for a sick cow so as long as their healthy and happy I see no reason to makr them leave the barn

That being said I am the only one in my family not to have been a grazing herd but their all retired now

message 1424: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments This winter was so stinking cold I didn't even raise any calves outside in hutches. I have never had any problem with hutches in winter. Calves were all in barn amd had at least 2 I'cmve noticed that must have had frost bite on their ear tips an a half quarter size of their ear broke off. Talked to onr other farmer who has a few hundred calves all raised inside a barn and they had countless numbers of calves have their ear tips freeze and break off. Temps should have never been so cold I don't know if a draft hit them or what. Never heard of such a thing. I did see one farmer who had calves in hutches outside had custom ear muffs made for his calves. Apparently his own idea but probably shoukd patent them and sell them after this winter

The drought has been so bad for cows and ranchers in Texas and elsewhere. Not enough water for drinking or growing grass for feed to maintain large herds. Pretty discouraging to ranchers. Farmers and ranchers contend with so much uncertainty it seems plus do a lot of demanding physical labor to keep us "civvies" fed. Thank you, Travis!

message 1430: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments One of the solutions to our current drought, is no longer growing almond and avocado crops. I guess they are water intense crops, but I can't imagine that would be as easy as they are trying to make it sound.. Perhaps we should stop watering all the golf courses and swimming pools ;-)

Good idea in my opinion. The original golf courses in Scotland certaintly weren't coddled like golf courses are now.

And swimming pools - yes especialy individual swimming pools. I think community pools are a good thing. A shared resource unlike the individual pools that are idle almost always.

message 1433: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments We had a huge drought here for about 7 years about 7 years ago. No grass whatsoever could be watered unless it was the stadium, and only commercial pools could be filled. We also couldn't wash our cars, and could only water plants on certain days of the week. And told to shower for 2 minutes only. Worked great, although we got to 10% of our dams left when it finally broke.

Sarah | 18550 comments Just seen the most amazing thing. On my way to the train station in the nearby village to where we moored yesterday, I spotted an old classic red telephone box which is no longer in service but instead it has rows of book shelves with books on. people can take their unwanted books there, leave them and borrow ones which are there. I will try take a picture on my way home and post for you.

Cool - hope you can get a pic to post :)

We have little neighborhood nook bookcrossing. Not a neato classic telephone box. But dear still.

Love these little "libraries."

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I love the little library movement too. We have 3 in our (little) town, and we use them pretty often. One of them is only a block from our house. My kids love to go and pick there, chose something, leave something in exchange. And I love the idea of keep the books circulating.

Berit | 641 comments I have a question, is somebody monitoring these little libraries? I'm just thinking what would happen if they had one around here :-(

message 1441: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments As far as I know when a library is built, the person who did it, or someone chosen from the group which did it, is responsible for take a look a it, keep it clean, etc. But this is "common" people interested in the project, is not like the little free library as an institution monitors the libraries. The program works as a group of individuals interested in the project. What I mean is that the program itself is not the one who builds the library, but people who wants to participates. Two of the libraries we have here where built by neighbors who have them in their front yards. The third one was a school project of a public elementary school, and is located in the school parking lot. All the little libraries are suppose to be registered and have a number, since although each one is an individual initiative, they are part of the bigger project. Very interesting.

I agree that they won't work everywhere. All the visitors form Uruguay and Argentina we had here are surprised by the fact that the library actually have books inside and is not empty!

message 1442: by Sarah (new)

but i agree, it would likely not work well here and that is a shame...if i thought it would, hubby would be out there building one for me

I don't believe they *have* to be. But can be.

message 1450: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments They don't have to be. The suggestion is to register them in order to have them mapped, and in case you want some support to buy books to get started.
