Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I still have 3 in final four but just about every other team has been wiped off. Kentucky wisconsin gonzaga duke and kansas if they win thats about all I have still in play. I got hammered hard this year.

Stephanie Good luck :) I have gonzaga going out this round..hoping they prove me wrong this year though. Would be cool to see my hometown team win! My hubby wanted Virginia and Gonzaga in the championship with Virginia crushing them. He's from Spokane too but hates the Zags:)

message 1356: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I put Gonzaga to at least a sweet 16 every year I think. This is first tine for me to out them in a final four and if there is any hope for me in the pool, which I doubt there is, it all rides on Ganzaga now.

I understand your husband Stephanie. I live 1hour 15 minutes from Syracuse. Yet we are Duke fans. Amd this is definitely orange nasketball zone. Never cared for SU and their beloved zone defense. Actually I don't root for a single ny team
In any sport

Stephanie I just fell way down with my bracket after that gonzaga win..oh well..I still have Kentucky and hoping for a Wisconsin win tonight!

Sarah | 18550 comments No idea what you guys are talking about. And I think I'm happy in my ignorance - it sounds complicated ;-) I've been AWOL for a few days as our internet signal is poor where we're at at the moment. But on a plus side, it did mean that I could enjoy the very Spring-like weather we had over the weekend. We took our boat on a little cruise up the canal and back. We are in between two amazing Aquaducts - Dundas and Avoncliff - it's a bit crazy really - the canal goes over the river and train lines at both points. If we continue to get nice weather, I might have to take the internet up to the bridge to get online as there is a better signal there.

So the supermoon on Friday, it was cloudy here. Then yesterday it was clear here so I could see the moon and I was surprised to see that it's just gone past a New Moon so I'm not sure what all the fuss was about - how can you see a super-new-moon even without clouds?!? I just assumed it would be a full moon. Sorry if I confused anyone.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Brr.. I just read on the news that a plane crashed in France, 142 dead. I don't like flying (although I do it to go places), and whenever there's a plane crash it scares me a bit extra for a few days. Usually I start thinking about reasons why it wouldn't happen to me (a small Asian company, I would never fly with them! / It happened in Africa, I know safety standards are not up to what they are here. / It was a terrorist attack, such a small chance of that happening again etc.), but this one is just so like a flight I would take. Barcelona (a city I visited and will probably visit again) to Dusseldorf (the airport we mostly use when flying somewhere), with GermanWings (a very good airline that we used many times before). I can think of no reason why I couldn't have been on that flight, or a similar one in the future.

I know this reasoning is completely useless, but it's what my mind does when something bad happens.

message 1367: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments No I understand. I do the same. I'm a nervous flyer at the best of times, so when I hear about things happening to planes I would choose to fly on, ick.

I hadn't heard yet, our news has it as breaking but no info. Off to BBC I go. Hope everyone's people are okay.

message 1368: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Oh no :( sad:(prayers out to the families!
I feel the same about flying these days..

message 1369: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments My newest thought is 'ah, so now there has been one big plane crash this year in a trustworthy region of the world with a trustworthy company, chances of that happening again are very small, so my flights to London and Cuba in June are probably safe'. And I feel better. It's weird how that works.

I had a very productive work-day but I'm afraid I'll be obsessively checking the news from now on for more information to find more reasons why it wouldn't happen to me.

message 1370: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Peggy, I try not to think about aiprplane travel as well. I don't travel often in planes but have and every time it stresses me out. We are traveling by plane with the kids a couple times this year so now I'm more stressed. I rarely watch the news but my husband asked to have it on this morning and there you go...

My son has a strong fear of flying so I'm just hoping he doesn't hear much about this flight.

message 1371: by Tasha (last edited Mar 24, 2015 04:59AM) (new)

Tasha Berit, my daughter just really started dancing in a school a few years back but she has always been a 'dancer' at home. She grew up watching Shake it Up, you may now that show from Disney Channel. haha. :)

She takes a couple classes this year and wants to add ballet next year and then try out for their performance team. It's not a competitive school like some out there, the girls learn a lot but the owner also tries to make it a more laid back, fun school. She wants to make dance fun for the girls. It's all so much fun though. She does take a cheerleading clinic on occassion but it's never really serious for her. I would actually hate for her to be a cheerleader....to scary with all those flips they do! I feel for you, it must be hard watching your daughter in those moves!

message 1372: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Oh, that's horrible news about the plane crash! My thoughts go out to all the families. I get a bit nervous about flying too (although I have been on planes more than enough times over the years) so I always feel uneasy when I hear about things like that happening. Thing is, planes are the safest mode of transport and crashes are very rare, it's just when they do happen they are very severe and consequently get a lot of media attention which understandably sends everyone into panic mode.

message 1373: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments For our trip to Mexico last month we flew into Houston in big fog bank. We couldn't even see the ground when - whumpf - we were on the ground! Startled the bejesus out of everyone, but it was a perfect landing.

I think flying is scary - but so is driving. I have more fears about auto accidents than plane crashes. I try to be safe but not think about it too much.

message 1374: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I just read a short article on the crash. How sad for the families.

I also feel nervous about boarding a plane and flying. I remind myself of the overwhelming number of planes that fly safely and successfully world wide every day. It's just that when one does crash, it's spectacular because of the number of people on board. I have a much higher chance of being killed in a car accident, yet I don't think about that every time I jump in my car.

message 1375: by Lisa (last edited Mar 24, 2015 08:22AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments That's exactly how I feel TJ and Janice. If we thought too much about all the things that could potentially happen to us every time we go out and about, we would never leave our houses.

message 1376: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments You guys were my breaking news this morning. I heard about the plane crash here, before I heard about it on the news. Don't like flying all that much, but you are alright I probably have a bigger chance of getting in a car accident or tripping down my stairs :-) thank getting in a plane crash. It still is very sad, when you hear about it.

message 1377: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I agree. It's a good thing that we don't! Only when something this big happens it makes you think for a moment. It will fade away in a few days and by the time you have to fly again, you'll feel just like you always do.

I remember flying home from somewhere a few years ago, when my fear of flying was at its highest (luckily it has gotten a bit less in the last two years) and then 2 days before we were supposed to fly, a plane crashed in Spain. I was so afraid I couldn't stop crying, even when we were on the plane. For a while I always felt like it would be a 50/50 chance whether I would survive a flight. Nowadays it feels like 99% (although not today), much improved.

message 1378: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments We hit horrific turbulence on a flight home from Florida once. It was so bad that there were a lot of people, adults and children, screaming and crying because they were so scared. It went on for ages before the plane finally got out of it. I was with my parents and we all admitted once the flight was over that we thought we were going to crash. Thankfully we have never experienced turbulence that bad again and hopefully we never will. Just goes to show how much a plane can withstand though.

message 1379: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I'm not afraid of flying, but I get nervous when my husband flies. I don't know why. Probably is just that I don't fly very often, and he flies around 5 or 6 times every year. I suppose that the more you fly, the higher the probability of having some bad experience.

And it's always a shocking and helpless to see a plane crash in the news...

message 1380: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I was flying home from London (1998) and the movie being shown was Titanic. Those were the days when you all had to watch the same movie. Just as the ship was breaking into two parts in the movie, we hit turbulence. People were getting nervous and looking around. I have to admit that I was a bit nervous myself. The timing was so perfect that they couldn't have planned that if they'd tried.

message 1381: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm glad I never had such bad turbulence on a plane.

Your story of all watching the same movie reminds me of my niece, who took a very long busride in Argentina a few years ago. The movie they played for everyone to see was Saw...

When we fly to Cuba the cheapest airline also offered only a general screen for everyone. We payed 10 euros more to another airline and have personal screens now :)

message 1382: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments What timing Janice with that movie! I'm not surprised people were a little on edge. I started writing a post explaining the reasons behind this (as well as other comments in this post) from a psychology/neuroscience POV then deleted it. I'm off duty right now!

I love flying. I was late to it - I went to Grenada for my 21st birthday. I went with my boyfriend-at-the-time's family and they worked for the airline we flew with. It meant that for part of the journey I was upgraded to Business class and I also got to ride in the cockpit (this was pre-9/11). My favourite part about flying is take off and landing. My only problem with it is it messes my sinuses and ears up and on long haul I have had really painful pressure headaches.

I'm currently in the process of finding new offices to work from which are closer to the train station so that I can cut down my travel time to work and save me some money too. I'm still in the stage where I don't mind the commute and it feels like a day out almost but I know it will start to get annoying at some point. I've arranged to see one next week so fingers crossed.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Speed seems like a perfectly appropriate movie for a bus trip. I wonder if any airlines every forced their passengers to watch Snakes on a Plane in-flight. LOL.

I'll be flying for the second time ever in May. Well, I guess technically it would be the 5th time I've been in a plane due to a round trip with transfers, but you understand what I mean. The only time I've flown before was back in 2003. It didn't bother me, but I was nervous.

We are vacationing with my sis-in-law and her family. Her youngest daughter, 10, is extremely nervous about flying so I'm hoping she hasn't seen too much about the recent crash. They may not be able to coax her onto the plane if she has. When we first started discussing this trip and talked about flying instead of driving, she said she wasn't going if we flew. But really, what 10 year old girl can turn down a trip to Disney World?! LOL. Hopefully the plane ride will be smooth and we can use that to help motivate her to get on more rides. She has already told me that she absolutely will not get on Tower of Terror, which is my favorite!

I flew in a commercial 10 seater one time and ended up in the co-pilot's seat. The pilot was telling me that if he has a really nervous flyer on board, he will put that person in the co-pilot's seat. Just being able to see out the window and the controls, make's a person feel more in control of the situation and they tend to settle down.

My dad is a pilot and I've flown many times with him in his 4-seater Cessna. I even have pictures of my son when he was age 2-1/2 sitting on his dad's lap in the co-pilot seat actually flying the plane. Dad took his hand's off his wheel. Alan pushed on the wheel in front of him and the plane dipped down. Then he pulled it towards himself, and the plane went up. The smile on his face was one of amazement when he realized what was happening. We spent some time dropping and rising before Dad took over the controls. It's ironic that Alan now has such a terrible fear of flying that he won't travel by plane.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Why did you think it was awful, Dawn? I loved it! We rode it several times when we went a few years ago. My older niece was probably 12 around that time and was reluctant to ride it. After we convinced her to try it she loved it. The first time she giggled uncontrollably the entire ride and got me tickled. As soon as it was over she asked to ride again.
