Stephanie Happy St. Patrick's Day to all that celebrate:)
We had a great weekend out of town! The Penguins got killed by the Red Wings at the hockey game but it was still fun :)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments As my 2&4 yr olds sat singing and fooling around already finished with breakfast at 5:10am I thoight we're pretty lucky most kids that young probably would have a fit getting up that early everyday. My daughter wakes up smiling everyday andy son is about 50/50 happy and miserable. All depends if he spent alot of time fooling around instead of sleeping when he went to bed. One day he be miserable the next up at 4:30 like nothing

We have that in Canada too.
If you punch them in retaliation they stop, at least that's been my experience!

Camilla | 2100 comments OMG, I just saw the most amazing northern lights, just looking from our back yard. I've never seen them before, they are not that common here in southwestern Finland.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm jealous Camilla! I read they should also be visible in the north of the Netherlands. Unfortunately I'm in the south.

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm jealous too Camilla. I have always wanted to see them. my best friend is currently cruising around Norway in search of them. One day...

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I'm a few days late on the Kindle Unlimited conversation, but I do have it and quite enjoy it. Someone asked about how long you can keep a book, there is no limit. I always forget to "return" them and I get a friendly reminder when I try to download an eleventh book. A couple clicks and one book is returned and can download the next one.

The biggest advantage of Kindle Unlimited for me is the audiobooks. Our library system is lacking in my corner of the world so I don't get to take advantage of most of those programs like overdrive that so many here use. It is much more economical than audible, but like was mentioned before, there aren't really any new releases. But there are some really great titles to chose from...

Off of the top of my head: The entire Harry Potter Series, The Lord of the Rings (with narration), The Hunger Games, Blake Crouch's Wayward Pines trilogy, a lot of the newer "classics" like The Handmaid's Tale. I'm just about to start listening to Winter's Tale via Kindle Unlimited.

You can go to amazon.com and in the top left corner is a tab "Shop By Department" that will bring up a list of departments when you hover over it. Then hover over "Kindle e-readers & Books" and it will bring up another menu, click on "Kindle Unlimited" and you can review the titles that are available. I have found LOTS of interesting sounding books.

I have only used the program for a few months, but so far it has paid for itself almost every month. If I listen to just one audiobook from Kindle Unlimited each month, it is pretty well guaranteed to pay for itself that month.

message 1214: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Kimmy Diane, I decided to try it out. I already bought around seven or eight books on audio for $1.99, that is a pretty good deal! Will see where it takes me.

message 1215: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments So far I have only listened to audiobooks on Kindle Unlimited that came with free narration. I have a GR shelf specifically for KU books with narration if you need some ideas. Or if you have recommendations, I'd love to hear them. I want to build that list up more for when I'm needing something for my commute on short notice.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Stephanie wrote: "How is the gilotto, Cherie? Love Guiness:)"

It has been many, many years since I actually drank any Guiness, but the gilotto was good. First time I had it. Our cafateria hosts outside vendors and I think the gilotto guy has been showing up about once a week with his little cart. It is pretty spendy at $4.00 for about 2 ounces, but I could not resist today, when I saw the sign. :0)

message 1218: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am jealous too, Camilla! I would love to see them someday. Seeing the northern lights was right up there on my wish list along with seeing fire flies (lightning bugs). I finally got to see them for the first time about 10 years ago when I went to visit family in Tennessee.

message 1219: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Weird we have like a bazillion fireflies. Never gave it a thoughy any place wouldn't

I heard something yesterday about how they'd be visible in some places where they usually weren't, but didn't hear why. Do you know?

That's so cool you get to see them!!!

message 1221: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments There aren't fireflies on the West Coast, I've only seen them when I've been visiting in the Midwest.

message 1222: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Say northerm lights may be visible as far south as southern california due to solar storm

message 1223: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I've grown up with the northern lights. I don't see them as much now that I live in the city because there's too much interfering light - street lights, housing, vehicles, etc. I really miss them. It's a miracle that I never had an accident because there'd be many times I'd be driving home, watching the northern lights instead of the road. It doesn't matter how many times you've seen them, they are as fascinating as the first. Oh, and we'd go out and stand in the hayfield in -30C (-22F) to watch. When it gets that cold, sound travels better, and we could hear them too.

message 1224: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2100 comments Re northern lights: apparently there was some kind of huge eruption in the sun on Sunday and the "storm" has now reached Earth. I know we were lucky (my daughters saw it as well, husband is currently golfing in Turkey so no northern lights for him), as many people travel to Lapland especially to see them and might spend days there without seeing anything.

Re fireflies: none here. The first time I saw them was in Italy about 5 years ago. I thought they were just magical. We all (our family and another family we were on the trip with) just stood and stared, totally enchanted.

message 1225: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I saw fireflies in New Zealand. Amazing experience!

message 1226: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments ARGH! Why did no one say this until now!? Apparently we could have seen Aurora Australis (the southern lights if you will) in our home town last night. As Aus is so much closer to the equator than our Northern hemisphere friends, this is extremely rare and I had no idea.

Ah well. Just *have* to go on that holiday to Finland, Norway and Iceland I've been planning for years.

message 1227: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I've only seen fireflies once when I was in Grenada and at first I thought it was some weirdo outside my window with a torch. But no.

I know that the Northern Lights can sometimes be seen from Scotland and Northern England but only when there is a lot of solar activity. So none for me. But I did wake up to a lot of mist and could hardly see out of my boat. Apparently there is a solar eclipse on Friday and a Supermoon too which should be good.

message 1228: by Lisa (last edited Mar 18, 2015 03:06AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Let's hope it's not cloudy or raining on Friday so we can see the eclipse. *fingers crossed*

message 1229: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments If they were visible here in the Portland area tonight/this morning, I would't know because it is too cloudy and raining! I will have to read the news in the morning. I need to go back to sleep for a couple more hours. It is only 4am for me. -_-

message 1230: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Sleep well Cherie.

Someone stole our plank yesterday so now I have to jump from the bank to get on our boat trying desperately not to fall in. we're about a metre off the bank. Just been for a walk to see if I could find it in the canal as sometimes it can fall off when boats go by. found what looks like ours on someone else's boat. grr.

message 1231: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments First steal the plank back. Second make em walk the plank. Time to go full pirate out there

message 1232: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Love it. I've left it where it is. Not sure I'm up for plank wars just yet. I can't be 100% sure it's ours as it has no major identifying features - just a sawn off scaffold plank. Plus it could have fallen in and they fished it out to keep rather than blatantly taking it. the next one I'm going to paint and put the boat name on.

message 1233: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments LOL, make them walk the plank :-) I love that one!

As for fireflies, we had them in Omaha and we have them where we are in Virginia :) they are so cool to watch! Would love to see the Northern Lights someday.

message 1236: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments That's unfortunate Sarah - I've usually found boat community folks are usually very helpful, friendly and look out each other - met some great folks that way. But occasionally one runs across the exception, which is a bummer, especially in a community that lives close together spatially. Hopefully, it's not your plank they have or that they inadvertently picked it up. Maybe add Hands Off!" :-)

message 1237: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I agree Lilisa. The people we've met in the boating community have been great - very friendly and helpful. But like anywhere, there are always going to be some who ruin it for everyone. It's the first plank but I'm guessing it won't be the last one that we loose one way or another.

No good pirate would be without a parrot. Maybe the parrot will scare away would-be plank thieves. Something to think about Sarah.

message 1241: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I've never thought about fireflies/lightening bugs being rare. Living in the Southern US, I've seen them my entire life so I guess I've just never thought about it. They are beautiful though. I love walking the dogs just after sunset on a summer night because that is when they are most active. I'll sometimes just stand and stare toward the tree line at the edge of our property and watch them.

I got a tripod for my camera for Christmas so I'm hoping I can take some long exposure photographs of the lightening bugs this spring/summer. If I can successfully capture the images I have in my mind, I'll be sure to post them here.

Seeing the Northern lights is one of the things on my unofficial bucket list. I hope I can fulfill that wish one day!

message 1242: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Northern lights on my unofficial bucket list, too. So magical.

Lightening bugs are said to be on the decline here in Texas tho the reason isn't clear. They have seemed skimpy in past decade generally in Austin area - however we had them in abundance in our neighborhood last summer all summer long. Wonderful : )

message 1243: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments When my sister lived in New Orleans, the lightning bugs were very rare there, mostly because of all of the mosquito spraying they did there.

message 1245: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Mar 19, 2015 12:14AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments That's pretty poor form. I thinking painting it a disgusting colour and/or naming it is a good plan.

I'm with you though, I wouldn't have pinched it back. That one part of me would be worrying if I had pinched the wrong one and was just passing on the angst.

My brother in law is an urban legend in this city. He hit a cat once in his car and felt absolutely terrible. He got out of the car and saw the cat limping away in a pretty bad shape, so decided the humane thing to do was put it out of it's misery so knocked it over the head feeling like a complete monster while doing it.

Later at home the police knocked on the door and said that they had had reports of him terrorising cats down the road. He explained the situation and the police were pretty understanding. However they took him down to his car, and showed him the original cat was stuck under the bumper. He'd whacked another cat!!

Anyways, point is. You never know if it's the same plank you're pinching.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Thats just so great Rusalka best story heard in a while.it is super hard to get stuff back even if yoi know it is yours. There is different grade log/tow chain. We always buy a heavy grade. The neighbor liked to cone borrow it and bring back a lower grade chain. Went down told him this is the wrong chain and gave the reasons how we knew. Funny he never owns any chain so he had to bring the right one back. Well besides the fact hes banned from borrowing I bought 2 new chains. Cost me outragous amount of money but is an even heavier grade with super duty bright blue hooks on it. Definitely no mistakes which chain is mine no matter the situation. Sometimes you are helping or being helped and theres a pile of chains in the back of the truck. No question which ones mine. The one that weighs twice as much and has the big honkin blue hooks

message 1247: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So I am aware my wife is always snapping photos with her phone. I never know what she does with many of them. Those chains mentioned previously I just bought last year. My wife was looking through pics last week and hands me her ohone. It was a pic of me carrying these chains acriss yard after UPS delivered them. 2 25 foot log chains. She snapped a pic amd even captioned it "fifty shades of gray has nothing on us. Travis is taking the chains we used in the bedroom last night back to the barn". Lord knows what she does or who she sends these things to
