Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I know what you mean. Cleaning is so much easier than make them clean. That's for sure. I tried to make them clean anyway. As my husband repeats to me all the time "do it for them, not for you". So I have ruled that Saturday morning is "bedrooms clean up time", and Sunday mornings "play room clean up time" (that means all the games and toys have to come back to the space we call playroom AND the playroom has to be tidy enough to be vacuumed). They take turns to vacuum the playroom too. During the week I do the rest of the cleaning. They help setting the table and this kind of stuff.
I have learned not too clean up again over what they have cleaned up. That gives them the security that they can do the job wrong and incomplete since I'll be there fixing it. So I bite my nails and try not to do that. From time to time I tell them "mom will help you today", so I clean with them until everything looks how I like it to look. I call this "bedrooms or playroom reset".
It has been hard to lower my expectations, and my standards. I have had to change my concept of "clean and tidy", but it's being fruitful. My oldest daughter (16 yo) used to be very, very, VERY untidy, and she has improved a lot. "Cleaning" means to her now something closer to an actual "cleaning". :)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I wish someone's cleanliness would rub off on me. I am very untidy and so is my husband! We are total clutter-collectors. Paper is the worst.
I spend the majority of my time away from home so when I am home, cleaning is the last thing I want to do. Because I work so far away, I only have 2-3 hours after getting home before it is time for bed. The majority of that is spent cooking and cleaning up the dishes with a little time left for relaxation. The clutter and other tasks are usually put off till later.
I can't imagine what it would be like if I had children. The furbabies are responsibility enough. All of you parents that can keep a clean house and raise your kids, you have my respect!

Yeah, someone told me once that I was not teaching my children responsibility and that I really should have been making them do more chores from the time they were little- like six or seven. So, not only did I screw my kids up, but to fix it, I would have to go back in time and change history.

message 1007: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Well, I don't know, Belle. My son should be the most irresponsible man on the face of the earth because he was chore-resistant. But, he turned out okay. Don't let the guilt trip that was laid on you weigh you down.

message 1008: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Mar 03, 2015 07:08AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Bella, teaching responsibility is much more complex than state chores for the kids to do. Give chores doesn't work for you, and it's ok. I don't see any reason to feel guilty about it.
I don't know why but people love to make parents feel guilty. I have been said so many times I'm doing everything wrong! Raising a child is not easy, and I'm doing my best. The rest of the people can go and get a life.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments @Rusalka, A hole?!?! Oh my... lol!
My sis in-law has one of those robots and she loves it.

message 1010: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Why is that? People do like to guilt trip parents. I've always thought as long as my kids were doing well in school and were good people, I had done a pretty darn good job.I would rather my children be kind strong individuals, the know-how to wash the dishes. At some point in their life they will have to wash a dish, as we all have.☺️

message 1011: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments People do love to lay guilt trips on parents, don't they? I remember being at some family reunion or wedding on my ex's side. One of his uncles, who I'd just met, made a comment to me (not to my ex) that we owed it to our son to have more children. It's not fair to the child. I sweetly smiled and said, "Well you never know what's in store for you." Inside I was spitting nails. How dare he impose his viewpoint on me when he didn't know me, didn't know the circumstances, and didn't seem to realize that it was none of his business.

So I say, take what you hear with a grain of salt. It's always easier to raise someone else's kids than your own.

Sarah | 18550 comments Well it was bound to happen at some point. I dropped my phone in the canal. It was saved by my earphones snagging on a reed so I was able to get it. Done the old rice trick and sat it next to the radiator and miraculously it's working. I think I might have to take out insurance on it.

message 1013: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments You were lucky, Sarah!

I completely agree with you Berit and Janice. Each couple knows what they expect of their kids and which is the best way in their opinion to get it.
I was very young when my first one was born, so I have so many people trying to tell me what to do due to my "inexperience". And know, even I have 8 and have been raising children for 16 years I still have to hear comments about my performance...
I don't feel an expert, I still struggle many times. I never give advices to other parents. It would be hypocrite since my life is so chaotic. :)

I have an otter case on my iphone. You may want to invest in one or any other sturdy case. Mine survived a cycle in the washing machine.

My older daughter dropped her iphone in the toilet last winter. She managed to get it working again (with the old rice trick, same as you). A couple of months later she dropped it on the floor in a shop and the back cover shattered, but it still worked. Quite sturdy, have to admit.

message 1016: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments That is amazing that your phone survived, Sarah! We went to the zoo last year and my friend forgot her phone was in her back pocket when she went to the restroom.... it fell out into the toilet! She fished it out and took it to the sink and washed it with soap and water and the thing still worked! I was astounded!

Sandra, did I read that correctly? You have 8 children?

message 1018: by Berit (new)

message 1038: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments @ Rusalka - 36 hacksaw blades, huh? Maybe he was going to make a wind chime. Were they new or used?
There are different kinds of hacksaw blades, maybe he just needed to make sure that he had them covered for anything he might have needed them for. If he was like me, he could not find one when he needed it and went and bought more. I would like to know where all the screw drivers and pliers all disappear to when I need one!

message 1039: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments And teaspoons Cherie! I swear we have fairies that steal things while we're asleep. Then we go buy more and the old ones just reappear!

After my Grandad died a few years back we found a lot of letters of his all of which he'd either sent (to his mum) or received during the Second World War. My Dad and I went through them and transcribed them as the paper was all yellowed and some of the ink fading. It gave us both a different perspective on him and while it was sad I also felt closer to him.

I have reached the conclusion that there must be a black hole inside every washing machine. It's specialised in sucking in socks, never to be seen again (and usually only one sock of a pair).

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments I was busy organizing and participating in an International Conference at my institute for the last few days. The good news is that one of the pioneers of the topic related to my PhD was here all the way from Australia and I was pretty excited about it. So imagine my astonishment and jaw-dropping glee when he wrote me a note that he was very impressed with my presentation and offered me a Post Doctoral research opportunity at his University in Australia once I'm done with my PhD. Woohoo, I couldn't believe my ears! :D *grinning away*

I remember talking on one of these forums about trying for a post doc in Aus and was told it's pretty difficult to get in so this comes as a relief.
