There were 4 of us in the house, plus 2 girlfriends. It was mine and my housemate's 21st, so it was a group effort. Besides the toffee shocks (that involved taking over Lexx's sister's bakery one night), it was pretty last minute done over the day or two before. I mean the slippery slip was just cardboard boxes all down the stairwell with a mattress blocking the glass front door at the end, so no one went through it.

We chose easy lands, like the Land of Presents (covered the room with cardboard boxes in wrapping paper), or the Land of Enchantments, where we just got some coloured light globes and replaced all our desk lamps, and then drew coloured chalk circles on the ground. The room with the bar and the food was the Land of Goodies.

We had come up with the idea earlier though over a few bottles of wine over dinner one night that just got ridiculous, then made it a reality.

Why life is too short to finish a bad book!

Berit | 641 comments Today I went to my book chat, for The Other Typist. We had such an interesting talk, and no one agreed with one another. I highly recommend this book if you like on reliable narrator's. Also if you read it I would love to hear your thoughts.. We had an in formal vote at the end about the ending and the vote was split exactly in half. It definitely made for a good book chat bread :-)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Rusalka - amazing party! Thanks for sharing.
Kinky Diane - I think I missed wishing you Happy Birthday! I have a hard time letting go of the not so good ones too.
Stephanie - good luck with the job interview! And the moving.
Peggy - the book lists will outlive us all but as long as there are writers out there and readers to read their books, we have to be happy to keep finding the good ones and try to let the bad ones slip away.
Kazen - thanks for the post!
Berit - the Typist book is definitely on my list. :0)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments We wake up with -7 F (-22C) so the school was closed. I'm here with my kids. My 7 years old daughter's friend is here too, since her mom couldn't arrange in her workplace to stay at home with her. That's bad. Working moms (and not only moms, dads too, but specially moms) really have a hard time here at winter. We usually have 4 or 5 days off and 6 or 8 two hours delay every winter. And not everybody finds a understanding and supportive boss or what ever...

I think laws all over the world should protect bringing up-parents a LOT better. In the end, they do a essential work, from which all society profits later. They "build" the future workers, consumers, etc. Without their work not much would go on.

(and spend in education is a LOT better -results- AND cheaper than spent in prisons and criminal system)

message 724: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I agree. I studied and worked being already a mom, and the help I had was form individuals that cared about me and didn't want see me go. But the laws and the system didn't do anything for me and my family. Same thing happened with my husband.

I went to the book fair yesterday to cheer me up a bit and I guess I was a lot down because I ended up spending $20 (that's a lot in my currency!). But I am happy with my loot of 30 books. Yes, you read that right, 30 books. It was a pain bringing them home. My back almost broke. LOL.

Yes, it was. In fact, now that I am looking at some of the books that I didn't buy, I am regretting my decision. I guess there never is anything like too many books. ;)

message 737: by Kazen (new)

Kazen I don't mean to make anyone envious (...maybe just a little envious) but we actually had some warm weather today - 14C/57F, bursts of sunshine now and then. My husband and I celebrated by biking to one of our favorite sushi places, yum! It'll be short-lived, though, with rain tomorrow and back to freezing later in the week. :(

Berit | 641 comments Congrats to the new auntie! It is going to be downright cold here at 60 8F ;-) all my mistakes are not due to auto correct, I also cannot type or spell, so it's just a big fattrifecta of mistakes :-) I'm just gonna think it's very endearing to you all, LOL

message 745: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 298 comments I am so glad it is the weekend. Even the sun is shining. Enjoying some hot tea to warm me up.

A gf of mine introduced me to baby bats last night. She says there's an epidemic of abandoned baby bats in Australia and she plans to go Down Under in December to volunteer. I don't know about her following through with her plans, but I never did realize how cute baby bats are! Never thought I'd say that! :)

I had a great week of staying positive and I really tried to make that a choice I made instead of letting my environment sway me. I hope to make this a habit of making positive choices for myself...then maybe someday I can apply that to eating right and exercising! haha...seriously though ;)

Hope my friends are all staying warm with UNfrozen pipes (Steph!) and staying away from that icky white stuff...unless you like snow, more power to ya!!

Yay, Melissa!! That's awesome about staying positive and how fun in regards to baby bats :) maybe you can join up with Monica, Katie and the rest to walk at Manito again? I hear Ya about being able to eat better and exercise..it is hard :( but I know you can do it! I'll join you :)

message 748: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Stephanie, I'm sending it your way! I have been a fitness instructor for the last 20+ years, and it is a constant struggle to eat right.
