Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We're with windcgill supposed to be -35f today -40 tonight and tonorrow. I was super irritated friday for having to buy a $400 battery charger aftet mine died. After today and I'm sure tomorrow ptoving to be money well spent.

message 602: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I googled -40F and it's exactly -40C. I can't even imagine what that is like.

We have a springy feeling here. 10 degrees C and sunny, it's actually comfortable to sit outside in the sun with a coat or jumper on. How I missed that!

message 603: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Personally I think anything below 60 F is cold, but I have very thin Californian blood :-) keep warm all of you in the cold. It's probably very good reading weather.

message 604: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Now -45 to -50f tonight. I'm not looking at tje weather after this

message 605: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Thanks, Peggy!! I'm in Eastern PA and it was so windy and cold today! Horrible. I was out for a bit (out to lunch) earlier but am warm and toasty now. :)

message 606: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Peggy, I have a question, what is a jumper? I read about people putting jumpers on all the time and I'm not quite sure what it is. Is it a jacket?

I don't know if I should laugh or offer you condolences. :) I mean, it is kind of comedic if you don't seriously hurt yourself.

message 608: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Berit, I think it's the same as a sweater, but perhaps it's the British word for ot then?

We learn British English in school but with so much American English around as well, I never know which word for something belongs to wich English.

message 609: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments A jumper is like a sweater or pull over - goes over head, no zip or buttons up front.

message 610: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Well as of last night I am now flat free, living on our boat permanently. Yay! We still have way too much stuff. Your accident proneness Rusalka must have rubbed off on me as I slipped down a couple steps yesterday and hurt my ankle. Feels sore today. We went out for an amazing Sunday Roast last night at the local pub - it's been way too long since I've had one. Note to self to buy stuff to make a roast next Sunday.

message 611: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Exciting Sarah! I hope your ankle won't bother you for too long.

This. But jumper is the right word :P

Worst I've ever done is broke my wrist over my 5th birthday. So you just have to laugh. Most of it is accident prone. Like the burn. My eyes are a bit out of sync as well, I do 20% of my vision out of one eye, and 80% out of the other, which means my depth perception is off.

Which explains how I still walk into the door handles in this house even though we're owned it for 7 years (door handles are my bicep height which unfortunately leave finger shaped marks on me... poor Lexx). But doesn't explain how I turn around and walk straight into tables or door frames...

Congrats on being full-time boat residents! Sorry about your ankle, I hope it heals quickly.

message 618: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Thanks for clearing up the jumper mystery. That is not what I pictured when I heard the word, but now I well. Congrats to you Sarah on completely moving, I think it is so cool that you're living on a boat. It sounds so tranquil and yet so exciting. One good thing about being accident prone is, you usually have very strong ankles :-)

message 619: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Berit wrote: "One good thing about being accident prone is, you usually have very strong ankles :-) "

Or very weak because you've gone over on them so may times! Thanks guys. I've not done anything serious so I'm sure it will heal quickly.

Years ago I got in to my car awkwardly and ended up getting my head trapped in the door somehow. I ended up with a black eye and my then boyfriend ended up with the evil stares from friends and relatives! So I feel for Lexx, Rusalka.

message 620: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments I do know my ankles are very strong, because I seem to twist them on a daily basis ;-) I have also had numerous black eyes, never for a good reason. But I suppose there is really never a good reason to have a black-eye :-) I just never have a good story.

message 621: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yay my town is labeled the coldest spot in the lower 48 states today. This is not a contest I like winning

message 622: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4019 comments The high today here in Phoenix is supposed to be 82 degrees. You're welcome to come for a visit, Travis.

message 623: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I won't congratulate you for this one, Travis.

message 624: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Normally 82 would be way to hot for me but they say that the dry heat west of Mississippi River is more tolerable than the high humidity heat east of it

message 625: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments It's going to be 80 1F here today :-) you can come to beautiful Riverside, California ;-)just so you know there is no river!I live in a community called River A walk and in a city called Riverside and there is no river not anywhere. There is a man-made stream, but that's about it.

message 626: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Dry heat is way better then humid heat, that is a for sure thing. When it gets humid here it is intolerable.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Tripping over Sheeba was how I broke the hades out of my left foot. Mother's Day 2012. But it's also what brought me into Goodreads and got me back into reading. Silver lining.

message 628: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I agree that dry heat is waaayyyyy better than humidity! Living in Nebraska the humidity was unbearable some days in the summer. The humidity wasn't too bad here last summer in Virginia..at least not as bad as Nebraska :)

message 629: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie It has started to snow here..sigh..

message 630: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments High temp today this morning at 6 a.m.

Temp dropped from 64 F to 37 F since then. Most of the change in half an hour!

My foot was aching liking crazy before and during the weather change.

message 631: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Wish it would snow here. I love the sound that is usually my first realization that it's snowing - hushed quietness. Doesn't happen much here tho.

message 632: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie It is tiny snow :( I love watching the big flakes of snow! It is so pretty but I dislike having to be out in it :) more because drivers tailgate really bad here :(

My ex would often comment about the number of bruises on my legs. I'd say, "Are they desk-high?" I tend to walk into my desk all the time. One really shouldn't try to read the paperwork and walk at the same time. I get bruises and don't even know that I have them.

The river must have dried up with all the heat. :)

message 636: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My grandson, Evan, would say that was "punny", Janice. :0)

He is going through that phase where he is always trying to think of a new joke to tell me - where there is a play on words, so that he can tell me that he was "just trying to be punny". I love 10 year olds!

If you have it colder than us, you have my condoleances. I gave up on thawing a week or so ago. I will be in a frozen state until april at this rate. I called -18C warm last week. I WANT SPRING NOW!!!!!!!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments A few months back I booked tickets for a Foo Fighters concert in London, and today I thought I'd make the hotel reservation as well. Turns out I'm a bit late and should probably have arranged the hotel right away. There's nothing available near Wembley (I wanted to stay within walking distance), or at ridiculous prices (€ 600-900 for two nights). Let's think of a plan B.

message 642: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments On the Jumper/sweater thing. A friend of mine who just moved to San Fran linked this on Facebook today, and it made me thing of you all. You guys speak funny, I'm with the bloke.

Some of these words go for the British too (like jumper), but some are very much Australian.

message 643: by Peggy (last edited Feb 17, 2015 02:52AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Nice video Rusalka! Funny how many words are still different, and it can be confusing too! (the appetizer, entree and main course for example).

Having learned British English in school, hearing a lot of British and American English on tv, having a Canadian English friend, and having spent 8 months in Australia, I think I use all words interchangeably ;-) There were no new words for me in the video, I just didn't always know which version belonged to which country. It would be fun to put someone from the UK next to those two!

If I write articles for work I have to use either British or American English, but I think I mix them up a lot. The only difference I always remember is the o/ou (color/colour).

edit: hm, that makes me wonder. When a book by an American author is published in Australia, is it translated (not the whole book, but the words like in the video)?

message 644: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments Words not usually. I still have lots of sidewalks and parking lots in my reads.

They may have a British/Australian version with the zs edited out and changed to s (eg. organised), and that all important u added in (colour).

message 645: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Love the puns Janice. It's amazing how many phrases we use which relate to water or boats. I'm really aware of them now and not sure whether I can use them or not now!

Will keep an eye on my ankle Mariab. No swelling just pain which is a good thing.

Sorry to hear you can't find anywhere to stay Peggy. London is pretty easy to navigate with the tubes though and they run late so getting to a hotel further away shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Back to the jumper, there is a song which was released here in the 80s about a guy who looses his jumper. It's really catchy, so enjoy...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxmZZ...

I love the Foo Fighters! I hope you can find a hotel in time.

I missed the Valentine's Day discussion you all were having but since I'm just now playing catch-up... I've never been a big fan of the holiday. The husband and I have never made a big deal of it, the most we have ever done is exchange cards or have a nice meal together. The last several years we have avoided going out at all on the 14th to avoid the crazy crowds. We made an exception this year though. It wasn't a V-day date, more like an early birthday celebration for me. We went out with two other couples to eat at a fantastic little Italian restaurant and then to watch a band we had been wanting to see. I'm not typically a fan of 80's music, but there is a local cover band that puts on a terrific and hilarious show. It was a great night!
