Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments We have temps at freezing this morning (0C) and freezing rain. I'm heading out on the highway in a couple of hours. Hopefully, by that time, there will have been enough traffic to loosen up the slickness and the roads will just be wet. One of my friends said she has some rig pigs (oilfield crew) headed in the same direction. They should just be leaving now, and they are going to give me road reports along the way.

So here's my song for the morning.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_H-L...

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments OMG! I just realized that it's Friday the 13th! Maybe I should rethink my plan of travelling today.

message 554: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Safe travels, Janice, if you venture out today!

message 555: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Have a safe trip this, Janice!

Someone had a bad start to their Friday the 13th near my house this morning. When my husband's alarm went off I thought he had the strobe light turned on, but I rolled over and went back to sleep when he silenced it. The alarm went off again and when he turned it off I kept seeing a flashing light. I asked him why is phone is making flashing lights and neither of us could figure it out in our half awake states. Then I realized it wasn't coming from the phone, it was coming from outside. Almost directly in front of our house there was a police car and firetruck! It took us until the sun started to come up to figure out exactly what had happened.... someone hit a horse in the road with their car! I don't know if anyone was hurt, but I'm pretty sure the horse didn't survive. :( It is amazing that us and all of our dogs slept through all of that happening!

message 556: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Oh wow! Poor horse. I bet it didn't do much good to the car that hit it either.

I completely forgot that it was Friday the 13th.

message 557: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Oh and you all realize that february has 28 days so March will also have a Friday the 13th right

message 558: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Ahw, poor horse. I don't believe in bad luck on Friday the 13th. Today is going very well actually. I had to give a 25-minute presentation this morning which went well and I got positive feedback. Then I travelled home and there were no train-problems, and it's a lovely sunny day with 12C. It seems the weather will stay sunny and around 10C all weekend. Also, it's Carnaval here, so I have Monday and Tuesday off. I might work a bit from home on Tuesday, but still, a lovely long weekend!

message 559: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I did not realize that, Travis. I do like that February is a perfectly aligned month on the calendar this year... starts on Sunday, ends on Saturday, a perfect four rows. LOL.

I know, Sarah. I never went outside to try to see and they had everything cleared out by the time I left for work. I haven't heard anything about the driver of the car, I hope they were okay. My husband thinks the horse belonged to some people that live just down the road, they have had a horse tied to a tree in their backyard for a few weeks or more. If that is the same horse, I feel even worse for it because it obviously didn't have a very good life. I have such a soft spot for animals and it breaks my heart when one is mistreated.

message 560: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments I flew to Hawaii one time on Friday the 13th, the flight cost was almost $100 cheaper, because people did not want to fly on that day. Just so you all know it is 90 F here today a little too hot for winter, But I won't complain.

message 561: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Well the lorry delivering our batteries was involved in an accident so no delivery and no batteries. We have to go collect them instead tomorrow.

I wonder if flights all over are cheaper on Friday the 13th - I might have to start booking holidays on that date in the future.

Glad your presentation went well Peggy.

message 562: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I was thinking the same Sarah! :D

I found out yesterday that the Cuba-tickets we booked on Wednesday were 700 euros more expensive the next day! I feel so lucky, I'm not sure if we would have booked if it had been so much more.

message 563: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I was going to take the day off and stay home and read, but my manager did not answer my request until 7:44 am this morning (I think he was traveling yesterday). not a big deal so I am here working. Pretty quiet morning actually. Today is the 2nd day in a row that we have dense fog but it is supposed to burn off. Maybe we will get some sun this afternoon.

I hope you have a good trip Janice.
I am glad your programming class and presentation went well, Peggy.
Keep warm Travis and the rest of you in the COLD!
back to work for me...

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I found this article about how one stupid tweet can destroy someone's life VERY interesting. My sister in law brought my attention on it:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/15/mag...

Some of the readers' comments are very sensible too.

message 565: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I made it here with few problems. There were a couple of foggy patches and the road was pretty wet. It must have been bad during the night because there were quite a few vehicles in the ditches. One was on its roof. They all had police tape on them, so obviously several hours old.

Not so much, busy mainly. Stressful when things go wrong. I however, don't touch the papers and presenters though. I leave that to the academics, they can deal with the egos, the papers and publishers if needed after. I don't paid enough to deal with that lol

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm feeling a true cook today! I made a beef stew (not sure if that's the correct name.. the type of beef that has to simmer for hours until it's tender) which is still simmering but is tasting yummy, and a homemade tiramisu, which I just put in the fridge and can't try yet. Never made either of them before, hope they are successful :D

I often find this elaborate cooking too much work, especially when I have a normal 2-day weekend in which I also have to clean and do groceries etc., but now I have 4 days off so I figured I surprise bf when he gets home from work :)

Berit | 641 comments Is Valentines Day and international holiday?well Happy Valentines Day to all of you to celebrate :-) and to all of those who don't as well ;-) and Peggy I'm coming to your house for dinner ;-)

message 572: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments You're welcome Berit! We have plenty :D

I think Valentines Day is an international holiday, at least in the Western world. We have it too, but we don't celebrate. Any of you have special plans for today?

message 573: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Well thanks for the kind offer Peggy, however I think it would take quite a while to get to her you are :-) I have no plans really I am single for the first time on Valentine's Day in about 22 years, but don't feel bad I am actually really enjoying being single.

message 574: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments It's considered a American holiday down here. But it's being embraced.

But not by me. Not that it matters though, being the 15th :P

Sounds delicious Peggy! Homemade tiramisu is the bestest.

I made slow cooked lamb shanks while I was off with my back this week and burnt my arm on the pan while it was 200C. Dealing with the burst blister aftermath now :( So tiramisu sounds lovely and cold!

And while typing this, I knocked my last Riedel wine glass and shattered it into 3 pieces... I'll just have to buy some more /sigh

message 575: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie No plans here either unless you count looking at an apartment complex something :) we are headed back to the community that we looked at last week! We had gone on a group tour last time so there is a few things I forgot to ask or look for. I just want to make sure that if we move that it will be the right place :)

message 576: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Valentines Day is celebrated in the UK and it's pretty big. I do not celebrate it though. No plans here. We went out for an Italian meal last night but not because it is Valentine's Day today but because I was feeling ill and couldn't be arsed to cook! Your tiramisu sounds fabulous Peggy - it's one of my favourite desserts but have never tried making it myself.

message 577: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That back/burn/blister sounds painful Rusalka. Sounds like wine is definitely called for but it's a shame you broke your glass!

message 578: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments I told my daughter not to go out to dinner tonight with her boyfriend, it is crazy on Valentine's Day at every restaurant.:-) They ended up going to the beach, it is really unusually warm here even at the beach.

message 579: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Feb 14, 2015 04:44PM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments @Rusalka, I hope your arm get better soon. I did the same thing last summer while cooking homemade pizza... It's painful, and the hot weather makes it worst.

@Peggy, I hope you enjoyed your dinner. I'll be waiting for your comments about the first tried foods.

Today our little man was baptized, so those were all our plans. We have never celebrate Valentine's Day really.

yum yum yum : )

message 583: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments And best Sachertote was in Austria. I won't even order it here cause it's not Sachertorte. I don't know what it is.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Tiramisu vs. Sachertote...

what's your opinion?

message 585: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Both sound good to me :-) anything sweet ;-)

message 586: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments They're both very good, but I think tiramisu wins out by a very slight margin.

message 587: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Tiramisu I think :)

My tiramisu tasted good but it didn't set properly so it was a bit too soft. Maybe it will be better today after many extra hours in the fridge. The stew was delicious!

It should be noted that I am the most accident prone person I have ever met in my entire lifetime. It is actually ridiculous.

Did you ever think in using a diving suit and a helmet for better protection? Or at least get an accident insurance? :)

We have private insurance lol. I only ever use it for my tiny jaw and normal sized teeth (I have had 8 adult teeth removed. Tiny jaw). My accident prone-ness is on the lower scale.

When I went to get my driving license, my Mum made me count every single bruise on my feet to my knees. I got to 37. Mum pointed out that she was hesitant as my legs would be her car. I am the only child that hasn't crashed her car. Body = cheaper than car.

I managed to play a game of hockey without hurting myself or anyone else today though ;)

message 592: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments 8 teeth removed! Oh my! Remember you will need some to eat! The other option is a "soup-with-straw" based diet...

message 593: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Oh I still have 24. Over 12 years (4 then) or so, and the last being 3 years ago (4 then). All good.

message 594: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Our medical insurance does not cover dental work. We do however have extra dental insurance which is not all that great. I had to pay $6000 out-of-pocket last year for my daughter's dental work :-(i'm pretty accident prone myself, the other day my youngest son told me "mom you trip well" I don't know if this is good or bad.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments How is everybody in the area surviving Neptune? We are 1F(-16C) right now but feels -20F (-28C)because of the chilly wind.
Tonight is gonna be really interesting: -12F (-24C)fells like -31F (-35C).

message 596: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments . I'm not complaining, but I do have some pretty cute sweaters I have not been able to wear ;-)Sandra, where are you exactly? I saw on the news how crazy the weather is in the North East. Hang in there all of you that live there :-)it seems like when you guys have a severe winter we have no winter here in California. Apparently there is a front over the pacific ocean and it's pushing all cold-weather to the north.
