ABANDONED. Science fiction, a girl and a giant cat/alien that can become invisible

I read this in the last ten years, I believe it's in the public domain. It was sci-fi written in the 60s pr 70s, I think, from the tone and vocabulary. The story involved a girl who was interacting with an alien race that was cat-like, and could become invisible at will. The plot included a jealous stepmother or possibly stepsister who was trying to get rid of the girl off planet, and politics involving exploitation of the invisible cat/alien race. Girl and invisible cat win in the end.
