Just from the blurb here on Goodreads, the characters sound like a crazy and wacky band of misfits, and I've always loved stories like that. The book sounds totally silly in the good way.

I'm sorry but this book was such a mess that it became a chore to read. If it wasn't for this reading challenge I would have put it down after about 50 pages. I really enjoyed the letters from Alex and the telling of the search. But most of the flashback story was terrible. How did this make it out of editing. I really wanted to like it. It was a great story. The way it was written was just too irritating. 2 stars.
30 pages in and I am struggling. I am going to finish it because of the challenge but I am really not enjoying it.
Like I already mentioned, I love this book, but I'm the first to admit that it's not for everyone. The author has a very particular style, you have to like it to appreciate the book, I think.
So I had planned to read this book for week 6 but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I will try again later.
I hated this book for the first two hundred pages. Now that I have finished I think it was beautiful and horrifying and a lot of words that don't exist. I resented the author for abandoning convention. Now I don't know how to feel. Empty?
I'm planning to read this one for my week 6 book, though the comments here have me a little nervous. But it's not a super long book, so even if it doesn't turn out to be a favorite, I should be able to make it through.
I'm about halfway through it (it's taking me forever to get through it) and I still haven't been able to get into it. I'm hoping it's only up from here
Finally finished the book. I was still confused about it and had to read a synopsis of it to fully put things into context for me. I didn't really care for the layout of the narrative, but overall thought the story was just alright. I'm excited to finally get through this book and onto the next book. This book was almost like when I was in college where I had quarters instead of semesters so if you hated a class, it didn't last that long...
Finished this book -- so far, my favorite read of 2015. I wonder what its competition will be!I started out really worried that I would hate it. It's incredibly difficult to read. But the more I read, the more I fell in love with the book and its characters. And it's not at all about what I thought it was about initially.
I can completely understand people who get 30 or so pages into this book and give up and stop reading, the beginning is really tough. But I must admit surprise at people like Amanda above who managed to get through the whole thing and still don't like it. But I guess everyone has different tastes.
I feel a little like Kimberly, except this transformation caused me to give it ALL THE STARS. I'd give it 6 if I could!

Finally finished this one and it took time not because I didn't like but because of other books. And it gave me time to pause in the story which can be hard sometimes. The writing is incredible and morphs into any character's style and language. I loved how the story unfolds little by little and how the more we get into the story the characters become more serious and revelations come and change their lives. It was a hard adventure to go back through memories of that time and so close to the characters since it was about their grandfathers. It was moving and shocking at times. Definitely a great read.
