My final thoughts are...I'm confused! (don't tweet her that!).
I'm thinking that fiction is maybe not this author's best forte, and maybe she does better with non-fiction memoirs.

Who else here has read Eat, Pray, Love by this author? How would you compare Eat, Pray, Love to this book?

Irene (irene918) | 1016 comments I read it. I love it because I was going through similar issues and reading the memoir helped me get through.

I loved Eat Pray Love too. So you would you compare that to this book?

Irene (irene918) | 1016 comments I would like to ask her where did she get the idea for this book? I know Captain Cook is real and he was murdered in Hawaii. The botanical
at Kew is real. There was a Joseph Whittaker connected to Kew.

The whole thing! LOL What is the meaning and purpose of this book? I kept thinking things would somehow tie together, but they didn't seem to. Unique characters were introduced, just to die and disappear.

What I got in the end it this is a book about a woman with sexual frustrations, who desires to give a blow job as an old woman based on porn books she read as a child, who studied moss for most of her life, and who thinks she was on a level with Charles Darwin. How does this all tie together?

What is up with the dog Roger?
Was her husband gay, or just non-sexual (since Tomorrow Morning apparently 'forced' himself on him)?
Why did she stay so distant from her sister, even when she learned what her sister had done for her?
And on and on and on. LOL!

Irene (irene918) | 1016 comments Her latest novel, THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS, published in Autumn 2013, is a sprawling tale of 19th century botanical exploration. O Magazine named it “the novel of a lifetime”, and the Wall Street Journal called it “the most ambitious and purely-imagined work of (Gilbert’s) twenty-year career.” Elle Magazine said, “Looks like Gilbert keeps raising on the bar.”
THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS was a New York Times Bestseller, and Janet Maslin called it “engrossing…vibrant and hot-blooded.” The novel was named a Best Book of 2013 by The New York Times, O Magazine, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and The New Yorker.”

Irene (irene918) | 1016 comments The novel is a historical fiction from the 1900th century. One theme is the women who were scientist were rich (by birth or marriage), childless, and the only study they can pursue is botany until me became threatened. The character Alma represents the women of science of that time.
Ambrose is a gay man. Prudence felt out of place and to feel validated as a person, she got involved in helping humanity.

And it was just too "all over the place".
