Good morning. Here's the IMDb link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2652092/?...

Nina | 6069 comments Just watched, "Legally Blonde 2," and it was relaxing and silly but enjoyable. Makes me feel old to see Sally Field and Bob Newhart so old looking. I don't know how old Bob N. is but he looks ten years older than my husband. I used to love to watch his shows

message 554: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I love Bob Newhart too. At his age, he's doing cameos on the Big Bang show. Amazing!

I watched "Ladies in Lavender" again. I think you had mentioned it. A wonderful story. The bonus feature on the Netflix DVD explained that it was supposed to be like a fairy tale. That's why they never explained where the Polish boy came from or how he got there.

message 555: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, as I mentioned before after wondering about the sections of the plot that were missing, I read the short story the movie was adapted from and it explained it all.

message 556: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It was so touching the way Judi Dench's character fell in love with the boy. She had never experienced that strong emotion before. Judi Dench was terrific in the part.

message 557: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS - What did "Lavender" have to do with the story? ("Ladies in Lavender")

message 558: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Lavendar was growing in the fields where they were walking when the story opened and when it ended. They were walking together in the end.

message 559: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I think it might have been symbolic that they were immersed in the flowers of their lives.

message 560: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I think you are right. Anyway, the title sounds good because of the alliteration!

message 561: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments saw a good movie for the second time and liked it very much even the latest time. "The Owl and the Sparrow."

Nina | 6069 comments The little girl character was unbelievablely real. I think you would like it.

message 564: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks, Nina.

message 565: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments So many new movies and so many that don't interest me. I usually go to one's with Judi Dench or Joan Poughwright. At least good acting.

message 566: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I too look for favorite performers.

message 567: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I usually admore Meryl Streep but her newest film with her daughter, I forgot the title, looks dreadful as does she. Not nice to say but that is what I thought when I saw the preview.

Hmmm, I don't know which film that is.

message 569: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments When it comes out I'll post the title. One amazing thing is her daughter is a younger picture image of her mother.

Is Meryl Streep's daughter Mamie Gummer? Here's a pic:

Was the movie "Ricki and the Flash"?

message 571: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments The answer is yes to both of your questions Joy and when I actually saw the daughter and her mother together on TV that is when I was astounded at their look alike.

message 572: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments They do look alike!

Nina | 6069 comments Weather this morning/put my mail out and forgot to rescue it when the skies opened/drenched words and stamps.

message 574: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Leaky mailbox? We could use some rain. There's a chance on Sunday, but it has been beautiful. 50's in the morning to 70's in the afternoon. Clear & gorgeous.

message 575: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments My mail goes through a slot into a box inside the garage. We put the outgoing mail into the slot from the outside and hold it there with a clothespin. I just wasn't expecting rain so didn't put it in far enough. It rained very hard here so might be en route to you. Our weather very nice also/low eighties by evening and fifties also at night. However, hot weather returning last of next week, unfortunately.

message 576: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We've had nice weather here too. Sorry about your "drenched" mail, Nina.

Nina | 6069 comments After the rain stopped so did our water stop coming from the faucet as there was a water main break. Then my husband accidentally sat a porcelain micro pan on the stove rather than the microwave. His mind was on putting the trash barrels outside. This wasn't one of our better days; but could have been worse. We didn't have a fire but he did burn his finger. Later on a hummingbird visited the feeder and that was a pleasant sight. Not a bad day after all.

That water problem is very inconvenient to say the least!

Hope hubby's finger is OK.

message 579: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments It's much better, thank you. We saw a funny movie last night starring Monty Wooley. He was such a good actor. The title, "Holy Matrimoney," and it's set in London but very easy to understand the dialogue as the actors all spoke very disttincly.

Nina, I was watching the same movie on TCM! It was an enjoyable film!
"Holy Matrimony" (1943)

"From Arnold Bennett's novel Buried Alive. An artist returning from years abroad takes the identity of his dead valet to escape the attentions of the press."

Monty Woolley and Gracie Fields were terrific! Clever plot!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS-The Goodreads description calls the story "An ingenious satire". YES!

"Buried Alive"(first published 1908)

message 582: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments And last night did you watch, "Casablanca," Joy? It had been so long since I'd seen it I really enjoyed it just as much as the first time and didn't remember much except the music and the quotes. "Play it again Sam."

message 583: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I didn't watch it last night, Nina, but I remember enjoying it years ago. ("Casablanca")

message 584: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments That movie aged well. It supposedly guarenteed Ingrid Bergman would be a star according to the narrator.

message 585: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Ingrid Bergman... one of the best!

message 586: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I recently re-watched "Scent of a Woman" (1992) starring Al Pacino. What a terrific movie!

Nina | 6069 comments Watched a fun movie "A Fine Romance," starring Van Johnson and Esther Williams. Not great, just pleasant.

I saw that one too, Nina. I've always enjoyed Van Johnson.

message 589: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments After reading someone on Goodread's suggestion of "The Jungle Book," by Ruyard Kipling it reminded me of a good movie we saw recently that profilied a part of this author's life titled, "My Son Jack." I recommended it.

message 590: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I forgotto say the acting was excellent in that movie.

message 591: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks for posting, Nina.
I was unable to access the Internet on 9/17/15.

message 592: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, I know the feeling as our was off all morning until just recently.

message 593: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We just watched the first episode of "Hill Street Blues" for the first time in 35 years. It was an old favorite & still is. I couldn't believe how good it was. Other than the lack of cell phones, typewriters, & some big hair, it didn't suffer much from the years.

message 594: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments SNL celebrated its 40 year anniversary with clips. Chevy Chase has gained a lot of weight!

message 595: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Because Hill Street Blues was a classic no wonder it held it's own.

message 596: by Werner (new)

Werner As I mentioned on another thread recently, I'm currently (re)reading the novelization of the 1988 fantasy movie Willow starring Val Kilmer. (Actually, the main star is Warwick Davis, who plays the title role and who was only 18 when the movie was filmed, but the better-known Kilmer was given the lead billing.) I wanted to re-watch the movie, after more than 20 years, to freshly compare it with the book; I have the former on VHS, so watched it on WEdnesday night. I'd forgotten how good it is!

That said, the novelization is significantly richer and deeper (and I can tell that though I'm less than halfway into it). Canadian author Wayland Drew based his work on George Lucas' written screenplay, rather than on the finished movie itself. The two differ, partly because Kllmer ad-libbed most of his dialogue, but mainly because a lot of material in the original screenplay was cut from the finished movie. Even if you've seen the movie, reading the book version (which I read before I saw the movie) would enhance your experience of the story.

If you're into high fantasy in movie form, though, and enjoyed (for instance) the Lord of the Rings adaptations, this one would be right up your alley; and it has the advantage of being a complete story in one film. (Lucas actually intended to film sequels; but they never materialized, and aren't essential to the storyline here.) Joy, I'm not sure you or Nina would get into this, but Jackie might. Here's the imdb link: www.imdb.com/title/tt0096446 .

message 597: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks, Werner.

message 598: by Werner (new)

Werner You're welcome, Joy! (Actually, I see the screenplay was technically by Bob Dolman. But Lucas wrote the original storyline, which Dolman would have put in a screenplay format, but presumably as a close adaptation and subject to Lucas' direction and approval.)

message 599: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks for all your suggestions and review, Werner. I enjoy reading them even if the books aren't up my alley so to speak.

message 600: by Werner (new)

Werner You're welcome, Nina! (That's how I feel about reviews and discussions on Goodreads, too --I may not want to read the books or see the movies, but I enjoy reading others' reactions and opinions.)
