SOLVED. Literary fiction/fantasy about a character who goes underground to pursue an explorer, the underground is corridors are lined with books. Spoilers ahead. [s]

I read this book about 10 years ago. I think the cover was yellow and covered in books. At one point the explorer (who I think is a fox), who the main character is trying to find dies to escape getting caught by someone. I’m pretty sure none of the characters are human. At one point the main character encounters creatures underground who read to gain sustenance. The writing is very literary. There are some illustrations throughout the book. My clearest memory is just that as the main character goes underground, you see that that the tunnels are lined with books.
