Sarah (calypte) | 84 comments Was Lexi really the main protagonist? Hmm. I have my doubts, she wasn't as proactive as I'd hoped, or as logical as she wanted to be. And I swear, if she'd picked up her father's knife one more time...!!!

Glad I read it, but clear to see the author's writing got stronger in later books.

The one thing I noticed the whole way through was that Lexi didn’t evolve at all. She was rebellious at the start, and rebellious at the end. Everything she wanted, she got. I think it would have been a lot more interesting if she had lost her sister, and found out that she was the Near Witch. Definitely a case of early author work, and still a good, fun read, but it wasn’t deep set into anyone’s character enough for me to latch on to them and be fearful that they were in peril. There was a lot of moments where I felt like I had just seen that in a movie...like the hand reattaching...it read to me like Imhotep reattaching his arm in The Mummy. I would love to see Schwab re-write this now that she has monstrous levels of experience, just to see how she would flesh out the characters to give them a stronger cling.
