I thought the book was great. Sure it was disturbing but it was one of few books that actually scared the sh*t out of me! But I'm thinking it's one of those books you only read once. Even if the writing was decent. Some things you just read once...

But wasn't that the whole point of the book? Erzebet became a monster to preserve her beauty because it was the only thing she was ever valued for and she was terrified of losing it. She was an intelligent, charismatic, and cunning girl, but she was never taught to value those qualities.
Her mother was obsessed with her own beauty and was slowly driven mad as it faded away. Erzebet's father only came home to have portraits of her painted because her beauty was the only thing he valued about her, it was the only reason he ever paid attention to her. Eventually Erzebet herself came to view her beauty as the sole judgement of her worth, and at no point in this book is that shown to be a good thing. It's what drives her to become the psychotic monster she is by the end of the book.
As someone who was painfully self conscious and obsessed with wanting to be pretty at one point in my life, I can say I saw a lot of myself in Erzebet and it scared me. I didn't want to be like her. She was sympathetic, but she was a monster. Eventually she realizes she has become a monster for something that was meaningless in thee end. This book is in no way endorsing Erzebet's messed up self image. If anything it's a warning about why placing all your self worth in your looks is a very bad idea.

This is not at all something young girls should be reading. I would not advise anyone to waste your time on the recount of Erzebet Bathory.
Our beauty is made to fade! Women need to learn not to depend on the outward apperance to get us thru life, and we have to teach our sweet little girls to learn to do the same.
This story sickens me!
