Beauty is a Wound - Chapters 5-11 (spoilers)

This topic is for discussion of the middle parts of the book. Spoilers welcome, but only for events up to the end of chapter 11. I may add some introductory questions here later.

I almost didn't make it through chs 1-4 but now I'm loving it. I just needed to learn the language of this novel. That happens to me quite often, where I struggle in the beginning to understand just what I'm reading.

Also I think it's true that novel-beginnings are frequently a little stumble-y, with throat clearings and repetitions or some other thing that smooths out as the story progresses. Beginnings are the hardest to write, I imagine.
