Trisha (trishabisen) | 2389 comments This thread is to discuss A Discovery of Witches, the first book in the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness.

Pages: 579 pages

Length: 1 Month (May)

Participants: Shareen, Michelle, SquidgetsRoom.

Everyone reads at their own pace during a Buddy Read. Because participants can be at different parts of the book at different times, it is extremely important to mark spoilers so that the book is not ruined for someone who is not as far along as others!!!

Mark spoilers by placing {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text but use the < and > instead of the { and }.

Happy Buddy Reading!

Twice?! That means it must be good :). I'm glad I'm reading it now then.

Welcome! You're welcome to join :).

Michelle (spookiieej) | 422 comments I've read about 100 pages now and I must say that it is a fine story, but it isn't great yet. I feel like not much has happened yet and it's mostly background information till now. How do you feel about it? It might be different if you know the whole story?

Ruthie (ruthieram_reads) | 985 comments I LOVED this book! Read it in January! Can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy with y'all

Michelle (spookiieej) | 422 comments I'm halfway through the book now and I like the character of Diana now. I like how she is getting to know herself better. The situation she is in does remind me a bit of our situation with this whole Corona thing now.

Looking forward to starting it; super behind on my books that are in line before that one!

Same here Shareen! Way behind in all my reading for this month (& last) but I'm hoping to start reading this before the weekend.

You always make me feel better! I had ten books planned for May, and now things have CHANGED. I will catch my breath and catch you up ASAP.

Michelle (michelleevens42) | 17 comments Would it be alright if I join this group too? I'm currently on Chapter 16 of this book and I am LOVING it! If feel like Dianas and Matthews relationship is the most mature and accurate vampire/ non-vampire pairing I've read so far.

message 13: by Tahera (new)

Tahera | 98 comments I have already read the first book and loved it. I will see, if I can squeeze a reread again or else can I join in for the other two books?

message 14: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (spookiieej) | 422 comments @Michelle, feel welcome! I don't know which chapter I'm on, but I'm at page 400 or so. I felt the beginning of the book was a bit dull. I felt nothing was really happening. But now I've come to like Diana and Matthews family. I'm not really a fan of the relationship between Diana and Matthew, but I'm not really a fan of Matthew overall. I feel he's a bit conservative and strict and secret. He makes me feel like a rebel. I wouldn't be able to stand his personality. (view spoiler)

@Tahera We planned the other books already. you can join if you comment in the general buddy reads post. You can see when we planned them in the spreadsheet as well.

YES!!!! That is why I liked this book so much because it actually seemed realistic!

There will be some explanations for why Matthew is the way he is towards the end of the first book and I've read some of the second as well and there's even more insight + character growth after dealing with things that have been held in so don't close your heart to him yet! HAHA!!

message 17: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (spookiieej) | 422 comments I'm up to the last 150 pages of the book, so I'm really curious what will happen there. After your comment Ruthie, I'm even more curious ;). Will probably finish the book tomorrow or the day after tomorrow and will try to write some kind of review (though I'm not that good in writing reviews, since I haven't done it very often).

Can't wait to hear what you think!!

message 19: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (spookiieej) | 422 comments Okay, so I finished the book today and I still don't really like Matthew. He gives me the shivers being so overprotective. But I think it just doesn't really match my own personality and that's why. That's also why I would rate the book 3 stars; it was a little slow in the beginning, felt like a lot of background information and there is a lot of Matthew in the book.

I do like how the book ends though, it makes me curious how it will continue. I also really liked all the other characters that are added in the end and the role that they and Marcus will (hopefully) play in the next book. Those are all characters I like. This will hopefully get my mind of Matthew a bit as well :). Having that in mind, I might like the next books in the series better than this first one ;p.

Tahera | 98 comments Oh boy I kind of liked Matthew.

message 23: by DieAReader (new)

DieAReader I’m only about 58% done 😬

message 24: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (spookiieej) | 422 comments It's no problem! I'll follow up on this topic during this month ;)

message 25: by DieAReader (new)

DieAReader So, apparently because I'm reading this on a 6" e-reader I'm only 1011/2400 pages into it. Doing what I can to finish before the end of the month, sorry everyone.
