Amanda (tnbooklover) I knew when I put this together that I was way overreaching. Ulysses and Swann's Way in the same year wasn't really feasible for me but I am disappointed that I didn't do better than I did. So I decided instead of being disappointed I would at least try and get the shorter ones done. I'm halfway through The Ice-Shirt right now and I'm reading Lolita in Dec. So I'm going to try and see if I can't get in Notes From The Underground and The Uncanny and maybe Wildfell Hall. I have a ton of other books scheduled between now and the end of the year but I'm going to make a last push to at least make my challenge respectable :)

message 52: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I will do Swann's Way with you in say 2018? I'm glad to see you're getting a few more done :)

message 53: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Haha yeah 2018 sounds about right.

message 54: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Ironically I intended to put a ;) after 2018. Apparently only my conscious mind thought I was joking.

message 55: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) That's funny. Hopefully 2017. I think we have enough heavies planned for 2016.

message 56: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I agree. We need to find some way to list future reads without scheduling them.

message 57: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) That's what my tbr list was supposed to be but there are so many books on there now that will never get read it's almost useless. Maybe we should start a shared Google doc or something like that.

We all seem to become overwhelmed by those TBR lists. I hope to read more methodically next year...too many books I didn't intend to read get in the way of the ones I meant to read.

message 59: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) I know that feeling well!

message 60: by Desertorum (new)

Desertorum Maybe there should be some kind of challenge where you have to pick all the books from your TBR-list (and maybe only from those that are put there this year or before). I think that might help me!

message 61: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Yes, mine is getting much too long. I like that challenge Desertorum!

message 62: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) I'm definitely going to accomplish some of that next year the problem is for every book I read 10 get added. I really need to delete my whole tbr list and start again with books that I only seriously intend to read not just oh that looks good ooh pretty cover etc!

I have given serious thought to having a category for exactly that...TBRs that I seriously want to read NOW.

message 64: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) That's actually not a bad idea. That would be better than deleting my whole list.

message 65: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Just to be an evil influence, I picked up Asylum yesterday. Doesn't it look amazing?

message 66: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I added a "priority" folder but I haven't been using it.

message 67: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Oh I have that book! It looks amazing I can't believe I've never gotten to it.

message 68: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Usually when I see the word "erotic" I flee very quickly in the other direction. The combo of elements in this looks way too fascinating though.

message 69: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) I went through a phase a few years ago where I read a bunch books about asylums and insane people but I never got to this one. Do you have any plans to read it soon or was just one of those oh this looks good I'm buying it purchases?

message 70: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I put a bunch of stuff into my Amazon cart to "sneak" into orders as I make them. This was just the first I bought. No plans so far.

message 71: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Ooh I like that idea :)

message 72: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Somehow it doesn't seem so bad to slide a $10 book in here and there rather than spending $50 all at once :)

message 73: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Okay, here's what I'm looking at:

Old School
Anna Karenina
Les Miserables
Sentimental Education

New School
The Wings of the Dove
This Side of Paradise
Light in August

Six Pack
Moll Flanders
Out of Africa
The Once & Future King
Kristin Lavransdatter
The Naked and the Dead
Maurice

Alternates
Sacajawea
Mason & Dixon

I also have Salammbo and Cider House Rules that I could put in there. I'm not entirely satisfied yet. Too many of these are buddy reads, too, but I'm closed through August if you can believe it.

message 74: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) That looks like a good list to me. We have a LOT of buddy reads next year so it makes sense that a lot of them are. I'll just pick different ones.

message 75: by Sarah (new)

Sarah We have plenty to choose from :) I may swap out The Once & Future King.

message 76: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I would love to read Swann's Way with you at some point.

message 77: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Ok. Do you want to try and fit that in somewhere next year?

message 78: by Sarah (new)

Sarah It would have to be Nov or Dec but I would love that.

message 79: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Let's do Nov. :)

message 80: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Sweet :)

message 81: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Ok so I'm making a crazy mad push in the last month and half to get 10 + 2 alternates (12 total) complete. Today I finished Notes from Underground. I really liked it and gave it 4 stars. If I had read it in my 20's I would have given it 10 stars. I have less patience for wallowing than I did back then :)

Funny how that happens. lol. I suppose we have less time left and wallowing is so unconstructive.

message 83: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Awesome Amanda :) I have no patience for wallowing and this book irritated me through the second half. Glad you finished another :)

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Hi Amanda!

Some of us participated in the group read here of "Notes" early this year.

I had a hard time at the beginning, but I got through it. I can't recall the rating I gave it though. I think I liked it in the end.

What really called a difficulty though was that I tried to read Virginia Woolf's "Mrs Dalloway" right after "Notes." That was rough, so I had to CNF "Dalloway." I'm still shuddering.

message 85: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) That's funny Andrea - I love Mrs Dalloway. It's one of my favorites but I understand it's not every ones taste. I actually liked the first part of Notes better than the second. I almost gave up on my challenge this year and probably would never have read this. I'm really glad that I didn't give up.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments I'm going to have to try something else by VW, since Mrs Dalloway went wrong.

:)

message 87: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) I'm planning on To The Lighthouse next year. The only other one I've read is Night and Day which is pretty different from her other stuff but I enjoyed it. At some point I want to try The Waves but I think that one takes some work.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments How do you feel about "Orlando?" When I told others about the trauma of Mrs Dalloway due to reading "Notes" Directly beforehand, Orlando was suggested.

message 89: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Finished The Ice-Shirt. I started that a couple of weeks ago and despite not really liking it at first I ended up giving is 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

message 90: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Finished The Uncanny gave it 3.5 stars. The essays are pretty interesting. Especially the one about childhood memories as that is a topic of interest to me.

message 91: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Congrats :) I've been curious about that one.

message 92: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) I majored in psychology so obviously I have an interest :) It's worth reading for the first and the last essay alone.

It would be interesting to see what Freud himself had to say. Everything I know about him really comes second hand.

message 94: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) I finished Daniel Deronda (4.5 stars) I listened to the audio narrated by Juliet Stevenson which made it even better as she is a favorite of mine. I also finished The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (4 stars) which I also really liked and flew through. I can't imagine the scandal that book must have caused when it was first published!

congrats. I pushed Daniel over to next year. Nice to see that you gave it such a high rating. LOVED Tenant and yes, I can imagine the reaction at the time.

Well done. She's a favourite narrator of mine too, I've been listening to all of Austen's books read by her and I can't imagine reading them without her now!

message 97: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) I'm hoping to do that at some point too Pink.

message 98: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (tnbooklover) Finished #11 Lolita - 5 stars what a disturbingly beautiful book. So the only thing that stands between me and finishing the challenge (12 books) is about 700 pages of the Count of Monte Cristo. I am determined!

message 99: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Nice job!
