This is a thread for any thoughts you have going into reading Space Opera.

Are you excited? Dreading it?

No spoilers if you've read it already!

Hello All,

I haven't been able to keep up with weekly posts because work (although I have been making time for 10-25 minutes reading each morning), but I'm going to make an effort to engage with the book club on this one. My library has both audio and ebook versions, so I'm trying to decide which. I'm thinking audio would be good for this. I know nothing about this book except what it says on the book jacket, and it looks so utterly ridiculous, frivolous, and 110% brain candy/unicorn chaser (the same feeling I have about Eurovision), that I'm really looking forward to it. I hope it's every bit as fluffy as it looks!

Jen W. (piratenami) | 362 comments I tried reading this one in July 2018 and bounced off it pretty hard, which is weird because I've enjoyed pretty much everything else I've read by Valente.

Looking at my history, I only got 12% in, but I moved it to my "stalled" shelf rather than "DNF", so definitely willing to give it another shot. I think I must have not been in the right mood or head space for it.

So I'm going to try reading it again with the group once I finish my current library books. Hoping it goes better this time.

Yay! Glad you can participate!

I'm looking forward to this myself, it looks like a fun space romp. Luckily i have access to a friend's digital library that has an excellent selection with a population base that doesn't apparently read much, since there's almost never wait times for stuff I want haha. Soon as I finish my current book i'll read this, get some questions out.

I am glad you're giving it another shot, Jennifer!

Sometimes I think it depends on current mood, for me at least. There's books I love that if I read them when iIm not in the right mood I just feel "meh" about them.

Megan | 244 comments I was the one to suggest this, and it sounded so amazing that I couldn't wait to see if it was selected so I went ahead and read it last month. I will wait for future posts to talk about the actual contents of the book, but as I said in my post suggesting it for this group, the premise sounded pretty much like the platonic ideal of a book for me - I live in America, so we don't have Eurovision here, but I'm familiar with the concept and love The Voice, America's Got Talent, The Masked Singer, etc. for the same reasons people seem to enjoy Eurovision. And who doesn't love clever humor like Hitchhiker's Guide, so combining those concepts is brilliant, especially when done by a writer with a good track record.

This looks like fun! I've loved her other books that I've read, and I could definitely use a dose of humor.

Sarah Pace (space1138) | 127 comments The description of this sounds like so much fun! I look forward to joining in, although unfortunately I'll need to wait a bit to do so. Since I'm not working, my new-book budget is pretty minimal right now- but I'll happily hop on board once my library is open again!

Hope you find it Sara! I lucked out that while my library didn’t have it digitally, my friends did. Her library somehow has a huge selection with very little demand, wait times are way smaller or non existent. She reads, but never to “maxing holds/loans” levels so let a couple of her friends share the wealth.

Megan | 244 comments For anyone whose library doesn't have it digitally - I just saw in an e-mail from another author that Scribd is doing a free 30 day trial right now, with no credit card required - and Space Opera is on there. :)

Rebecca | 311 comments Well I put in a request for this even though Libby said 0/0 copies available with an unknown wait time, annnnd... I got a notification today that it was available! So I will be participating this time.

I really have no expectations for this one. I've heard the "Eurovision in space" thing and that's about it. I'll wait until the discussion posts are up before I start reading; otherwise I'd just plow all the way through, as I'm off work this week.

I think I have less than 100 pages left, hopefully can get first batch of questions up in the next few days :)
