Nerdish Mum (nerdishmum) | 134 comments @Fay @Clémence my little man is only 18 months so I'm not at the stage where I can send him to play yet :) I did however read "That's not my Snowman" 6000 times yesterday! :D

message 52: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts @nerdishmum I feel your pain! This year when the Christmas books came out my 4 yr old read that's not my Santa to me a LOT! Did you find the mouse on every page?!?! Anyway it counts as a book set at Christmas so that's one crossed off for you :-)

message 53: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts @lydia what category did you choose first?

message 54: by Lydia (new)

Lydia (lapetitelydia) | 94 comments @ Fay: "book with magic" Taliesin. :)

message 55: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 11 comments Clémence wrote: "I considered Les Miserables as a trilogy since it comes in three volumes in a lot of editions."

Oh my gosh, good luck with Les Mis! I just finished it yesterday and it took me about 3 months (granted that was with Thanksgiving and Christmas in the same period and I set it down to read a couple other books in between), but it was well worth it.

message 56: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 11 comments I think this is a great idea. I don't think I will officially participate since my too read shelf is already overflowing and I never have enough time to read the books I want as is, but I'll definitely keep these challenges in mind if I'm looking for something new.

message 57: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 15 comments I was just going to do the Book Riot one, but I think the Popsugar one should be pretty doable too (plus a couple of the categories look like they could be really fun to find books for). Still trying to decide if I am going to let books "double dip" for both challenges. It would make it a lot easier, but maybe I'll wait until later in the year to make that decision. ;-)

message 58: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (samanyaaron) | 146 comments Ooooh i like this book challenge. I think i might give the popsugar challenge a go this year. Think im going to do what @fay mentioned and see what i can fit in to the catagories after reading rather than make a list firsthand.

message 59: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (arcanegumption) | 134 comments I think I might have to bend the rules for the popsugar one and combine some of them...like have my trilogy be... set in high school and Kill two birds with one stone.

message 60: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (newlyblank) I'm going to do both and let my books "double dip" between challenges. I don't think I'll let one book count for more than one category in the *same* challenge though.

message 61: by Nerdish (new)

Nerdish Mum (nerdishmum) | 134 comments I chose to not duplicate any "topics" from both challenges and just do it once, eg books published this year but I've not used any to cross categories because I decided it was a good way to get through more of my tbr pile :)

message 62: by Clémence (new)

Clémence | 117 comments I'm totally going to count some books for both challenge, because the books I read overlap so many categories... (But like @Sarah, I won't use the same book for two categories in the same challenge.)

@Rachel : Actually I did my best to fill my challenge list with book I already own but didn't read !

I think for a few months I'm just going to read books I already got, see which category they can fit in, and then look for the more exotic ones. ^^

message 63: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts Just finished reading When Santa Fell to Earth by Cornelia Funke to the kiddistinks and am using it as my translated offering (hey I read it and out loud no less so no judging!). Has anyone else tried Funke? I read Inkheart but found it hard going and have up half way through the second one. I love YA but I just can't seem to read children's or middle grade books for my own pleasure. Do any of you like this genre for pleasure/comfort?

message 64: by Cassie (new)

Cassie | 15 comments For anyone doing the Book Riot challenge, they have a goodreads group. The most helpful thing about this is they have shelves with titles suggestions for each category. ;)

P.S. Pretty sure I'm going to start organizing books on my to-read shelves and attempt these challenges as well.

Michelle (michelletheresa) | 228 comments Book riots comic book site, Panels, has their own Read Harder challenge! Who wants to try this one with me?

I'm in :)

message 67: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer That sounds fun! Unfortunately I have little clue about comics and what not, and our library system is atrocious so the choices are very limited.

I'll be interested to see what others read though. It'll give me ideas for future!

This challenge doesn't look to bad, I'm sure you could pick up later in the year and still complete it. If you have any comic book questions let us know! :) Panels.net is a good place to start too!

This looks great! I'm always looking for new comics to read, so this is an excellent way to get suggestions!

message 71: by Mariel (new)

Mariel (marielmohns) Is anyone else setting up a "reading schedule" of sorts to help keep them on track? I just did it mostly because I realized it would be better to read certain books at certain times of the year, and then I will fill in the other books throughout the year. For example, I want to read Blankets and If on a Winter's Night a Traveler before winter is up, and I will probably read The Hunt for Red October in...October, haha. I also heard that Landline takes place during Christmas, so I'm going to save that one for the end of the year.

message 72: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (arcanegumption) | 134 comments I should probably do some sort of schedule I'm afraid I'm reading the "easy" books first and I'll be stuck later in the year.

message 73: by Nerdish (new)

Nerdish Mum (nerdishmum) | 134 comments I wouldn't even know where to start on planning a schedule. But it is a great idea!

The Thief Lord is my favorite of hers. Igraine the Brave is also pretty good.

message 75: by quinnster (new)

quinnster I participate in too many challenges! My list is here: http://knowitnotsomuch.blogspot.com/p... I'm hoping I'll be successful this year and finish them all :/ I'm off to a good start, but isn't that how it happens every year? I start off strong and then .... who knows what happens!!

message 76: by Jodez (new)

Jodez (jodez4) | 66 comments My PopSugar challenge list (which should be in order) https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

If I find time I may read books, that don't already overlap, from the BookRiot list too (though I'm not big on audio books, I either doze off or don't pay attention)

If you are doing the BookRiot one I recommend My Place By Sally Morgan for indigenous culture and A Cut Closer to Whole for LGBTQ.

message 77: by Clémence (new)

Clémence | 117 comments Just as I thought, my reading plan has already been screwed up. Nevermind, I'll manage to make the book I read fit in the categories. ^^

message 78: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts So ladies it's the end of the first month - how are we all doing so far? I've managed 27 out of 52. I hated The Hobbit and the entire Southern Reach trilogy and I loved The Luminaries, Station Eleven and Ready Player One. I've read a lot of books I wouldn't normally have chosen, like The Crucible and Lord of the Flies, and the challenge had definitely given me more direction in my reading an expanded my horizons. How about you lot?

message 79: by Nerdish (new)

Nerdish Mum (nerdishmum) | 134 comments I've read 15 books so far last month but not all have been for the challenges. I am reading one challenge book, then one for "fun" (as if its not fun anyway). Think I am really going to struggle with my antonyms choice. Its probably going to take all year to read.

message 80: by Jodez (new)

Jodez (jodez4) | 66 comments I read 10 for the month and started 2 more. Only 2 were for the challenge, and most of which were comics/graphic novels/manga... On the plus side, I'm 17% through my goodreads challenge for the year.

Found myself in a reading slump, and had my kids home for summer vacation, meant I didn't have nearly as much reading time as I would have liked.

Hopefully, with my kids back at school tomorrow (yay for 6 hours of peace and quiet) I can make more progress with my challenge (or clean the disaster zone my house has become over the past 6 weeks, but we all know reading will win out)

message 81: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (samanyaaron) | 146 comments I've read 13 in the month and managed to slot them all into various catagories. Ive also come away from my genre comfort zone and tried new stuff which i have really enjoyed apart from books that are more than 30 years old which I have a mental block and can not enjoy the style of writing..

I've not found myself in a reading slump yet which is really good as i find myself getting into them sometimes.

message 82: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I'm on 4, almost finished my 5th.

I'm glad to have an excuse to now read books I've wanted to but haven't been able to due to book club choices, or just finding something " better" on my shelves.

I'm trying to use what I can from my bookshelves and then I'll head out to the library to fill the gaps when the weather is a bit nicer.

A few of the books were a bit disappointing but it's nice to have tried them.

message 83: by Clémence (last edited Feb 01, 2015 07:23AM) (new)

Clémence | 117 comments I read 10 books so far, only 2 of them were planned, but the other 8 will probably fit a category or another. I'm particularly happy to have finished 2 very dense non-fiction books (a book about studying and writing History, the other was about the Habsbourg dinasty) which I started ages ago.

I particularly recommend Horns and A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook.

I'm 18% into my reading challenge, still waiting for the moment when I'll collapse and get late on my schedule...

message 84: by Christa (last edited Feb 01, 2015 09:23AM) (new)

Christa (lessthn3) | 90 comments I've read 33 books so far, which puts me at 17% of my goal. I upped it from 100 books to 200 when I saw the rate I was going. A big stack of those were graphic novels, because first I caught up on most of the IGGPPC past graphic novel picks and then I went to a mini comic con and bought a few. :) For the PopSugar challenge, I finished up 11 of the 52. I made an effort to get through some of the longer ones since I knew I had more time in January than I might later in the year.

My favorites so far have been What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions and Off to Be the Wizard.

message 85: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (persephone17) You guys are so much better than me! I've only read 3 books....but it's hard for me to read for pleasure during school. Hopefully I can catch up during break!

message 86: by Katie (new)

Katie Kempski (darthphasma) | 120 comments I don't think I saw this in the comments, so I'll ask here: are we doing the BookRiot challenge as a group too? Or are we just going that on our own?

message 87: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts @katie, I'm doing Book Riot too and so are some of the other members. I'd love to do this as a group as well :-) does anybody else want to? Should we have separate "pages" again?

message 88: by Katie (new)

Katie Kempski (darthphasma) | 120 comments I vote yes. I just started "A Highly Unlikely Scenario" and I'd love someplace to discuss it! ;3

message 89: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts Hey Elizabeth are you listening?!?! Get to work lol!

message 90: by Katie (new)

Katie Kempski (darthphasma) | 120 comments I can probably make a board group (or whatever you call it) when I get off work in a few hours. ;3

message 91: by Katie (new)

Katie Kempski (darthphasma) | 120 comments Right! I'll get on it in a few hours when I have an actual computer. ;3

message 92: by Nerdish (new)

Nerdish Mum (nerdishmum) | 134 comments I'm doing both challenges as well as the Panels comic book read harder challenge

message 93: by Christa (new)

Christa (lessthn3) | 90 comments Nerdish wrote: "I'm doing both challenges as well as the Panels comic book read harder challenge"

Same here!

message 94: by Nerdish (new)

Nerdish Mum (nerdishmum) | 134 comments Same here!"

Did you find it much harder to pick choices for the comics challenge?

message 95: by Katie (new)

Katie Kempski (darthphasma) | 120 comments I just posted the boards of the Read Harder challenge! I'll probably put the Panels ones up later. ;D

message 96: by Leah (new)

Leah | 5 comments I totally wanna do this! It looks so cool! :D

message 97: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts @leah, it's really fun. Check out the Popsugar one too. Saw your post about the LGBT one and that looks interesting. Welcome aboard :)

message 98: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts Boom - stick a fork in me for I am done! I have successfully completed all 52 books for the Popsugar Challenge. Highlights were Outlander, Ready Player One, Eleanor and Park, The Luminaries and Middlesex. Low points were Riddley Walker (hard going), Reader I Married Him (just pointless), the second two in the Southern Reach trilogy (confusing and pointless) and The Hobbit (I think I was too old to read it for the first time). I am now going to attempt Book Riot with no "double dipping". It definitely looks more challenging in terms of content.......

message 99: by Nerdish (new)

Nerdish Mum (nerdishmum) | 134 comments Well done to you :D

message 100: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts @nerdish. Thanks :-) I kind of want a real life certificate or something......
