(view spoiler)[ I think I remember the father giving some sort of explanation on a new particle he had observed. Near the end of the book they used something called 'universe bleach' or 'timeline bleach' (can't remember which) to remove all the unoriginal timelines so only one remains. The protagonist is summoned to decide between the last two timelines present: the one in which their mother dies and the other in which she doesn't. I don't remember if they lie or not in order to save their mother. I also can't remember which timeline the protagonist is from, but I think they're from the one that gets erased in the end (so they choose to erase their own timeline, note that there is a high chance I am misremembering that last bit).
