Can't remember the title or author but book was a YA fantasy from around 2010. It is set on another planet with a medieval world and different kinds of monsters, I think some lived underground. The main boy has a book/journal that details the monsters. the cover is white with a picture of the world in the middle and sketches from the journal around the border.
