SOLVED. Adult Sci Fi Fantasy generation ship, mythical creatures. [s]

Hi, I read this book in the 90’s - paperback & possibly from a library.
It was set aboard a vast generation starship years after blast-off, people start getting depressed. The society has a complex VR setup for entertainment & groups of kids & teenagers are captured & made to participate in a competition to win a quest. In it they encounter creatures mythological, extinct and invented but they are real not be. Parents can help them with clues through the VR - it’s sort of Hunger Games in space with mythical creatures. Spoiler
One of the founders worried about people losing hope so created the mythical creatures to be born when suicides got to a certain point. Turns out they are being bred in one of the fuel tanks, in a sectioned off area & this is where the kidnapped kids are doing the quest.

Was this book for kids, teens, or adults?

I think it was more for adults as some of the characters VR sessions got a bit raunchy! So yeah, for adults 😁
