The Prince and the Pauper, by Mark Twain

Two boys: the same age, almost the same face. The one difference: Tom Canty is a child of the London slums; Edward Tudor is heir to the throne. How insubstantial this difference is becomes clear when a chance encounter leads to an exchange of clothing and of roles...

1001 Romances! | 178 comments From Wiki: It was first published in 1881 in Canada, before its 1882 publication in the United States. The novel represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, it tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court off Pudding Lane in London, and Prince Edward, son of King Henry VIII.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14527 comments Neat! WooHoo!

Melissa I've always wanted to read this one.

message 8: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments I might read this one with everyone... or at least watch one of the movies again.

Melissa I started reading it and I am at chapter 5 and both boys are now in their new homes.

It isn't a very long book but it does have the old style speech so it throws me off my reading stride while I think through what they are saying.

Melissa I finished this book today, I gave it 3 stars.

There were some very good parts to this book but also a lot of parts that bogged down and were hard to get through.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Sort of dragged in places, Melissa?

Anjali (anjali6678) | 13 comments Its an eternal story published in many languages 3 of which I have the privilege to know ,its the first time I have

read it in English,it was worth it even I had a little hard time with the old English ,but its better to listen that to

read .The Old language has its own charms, and is sweet like hell when spoken like in Jane Austen books we will

say make haste without even knowing we are using it same with Shakespeare.
The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain.
Prince Edward, Tom Canty exchange their places in each others life .Edward is a prince and Tom a poor beggar. Each of them had experience the life in stark class inequality in each of their life. They go back to life with more experience and more maturity.
Mark Twain has peppered this story with humor satire and life lessons .The grass is always greener on the other side We can only understand the difficulties of other people only when we experience them,we learn more from experience than words. This story shows us the class difference that prevail in society, prejudice , politics and many more things.
Prince Edward is Elite royal Upper Class who has no idea what poverty is .
Tom Canty is Poor below poverty line who has no idea what riches are.
Most of us know this story in one form or other but this story after 25 years of my life sill gives me great pleasure to read.

A bit but overall I enjoyed the book.

Gave it 3 stars.

message 30: by Deb (new) - rated it 4 stars

Deb I just finished the book. I gave it 4 stars. I really liked how the Prince learned from his experiences. I wish I did. Then maybe I would stop losing the same 20 pounds.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Glad you enjoyed it, Pat.

Heather L (wordtrix) I started this one Sunday, and am about halfway through it (did not get much reading time Sunday or Monday). So far it has been good, and a much faster read than anticipated. I'm reading a Barnes & Noble classic edition for Nook, and love that the footnotes are actually hyper-linked. Not all ebooks do that, leaving one to wait until the end of the book to read them, or forcing one to skip to the end of the book, then try to remember where you left off. It is currently charging so I can (hopefully) finish tonight.

message 36: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments That does sound neat, Heather... and convenient. I've only read one book that did that, and I really liked it.

Heather L (wordtrix) Lisa Kay: It was convenient -- except when the footnote was split between pages, LOL. I finished yesterday and can honestly say I liked it. Better late than never, right? And I get to check something off for the Ultimate Reading Challenge.

message 38: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Oh, yeah. I've got to get back to that challenge; I've read several I can check-off.
