ABANDONED. YA SciFi/ Fantasy. Possible monks/ witches, set in America. Read 2006-2009.

I read this book between 2006-2009 and it left quite an impression. I don't remember the title or specific plot details but I do know it is about either a tight group of friends (perhaps 3?) or siblings. In the first chapter, they are followed by a car without a licence plate (this is remarked upon by the narrator) and then kidnapped.

Setting : America. Somewhere hot. A boarding school, perhaps a castle or a monastery. The kids aren't allowed to leave during the week, only at weekends or holidays.

Premise: sci-fi / fantasy. There is an old witch / monk who lives nearby the school and is a 'good' character. There is something being developed at the 'school', something chemical. I remember it was quite science heavy (or so it seemed when I was a child). There was a plot line about the children's parents (because of course there was).

Would really appreciate any help! Think the author was a man.

It sounds familiarly like: I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You ~ Which follows a set of 3-4 girls who live in a boarding school castle, that escape and they discover their parents were hiding things from them. Kidnapping is involved in the series and the time range would match as it was published in 2006. However, it was written by a woman and I'm unsure about the witch / monk.
