I highly recommend A Dangerous Woman: The Graphic Biography of Emma Goldman by Sharon Rudahl. It's a graphic novel biography of Emma Goldman, the famous anarchist, social activist, political philosopher, and all around badass. Also, playwright Sarah Ruhl recently published a book of mini-essays (100 Essays I Don't Have Time to Write: On Umbrellas and Sword Fights, Parades and Dogs, Fire Alarms, Children, and Theater) that are pretty interesting, as well as numerous lauded plays.
I had a few friends who really enjoyed The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell.
Hi! Does anyone know an author with the initials JI aside from John Irving? I guess JE recommendations will do, too. Thanks! :D
If you like philosophy, theory, nonfiction, or history, The Situated Self by Jenann Ismael was pretty interesting. It's about how we conceive ourselves through language. If JE also works you could read A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan or anything by Jeffrey Eugenides. Seriously if you haven't, read Eugenides! He's amazing!
If you have children in your life at all, or just enjoy a good kid's book, The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles was written by Julie Andrews Edwards (yes THAT Julie Andrews).
