By the end of the story I didn't find myself exactly rooting for Frank, but I did feel some sympathy for him. I was convinced that he did actually love Cora at the end.
To me, Frank is a character with the universe stacked against him. Almost nothing works out for him. He may have “loved” Cora but I think she was using him. The futility of his life and his inability to change his fate are the power of the story
I agree that at the end of the story he did seem resigned to his fate, which was so very different from the devil-may-care-I'll-do-what-I-want attitude he projects at the beginning. The resignation at the end of the story makes me wonder if he always felt that way - that life just is what it, and he put on the tough-guy act for some reason.
