I think when Sebastian realized "this could have been me" with the similarities between when he was accused of murder. I will add that Sebastian is empathetic to those he loves/cares about so even without having it effect him specifically - it would have been personal to him.
I began to sense a change in Sebastian after he learned more about Nicholas Hayes from people who cared about him. Initially, he was told the man was a rogue, murderer and a disgrace. Once he started getting a more balanced picture, Sebastian started being introspective and seeing similarities in his own life. That’s when it felt like he dug in and was relentless in his pursuit of the truth. It’s almost like I could feel the change, which is a tribute to good writing.
I think it was personal close to the start. Jules talked about him as a friend and honorable man. Then the more Sebastian found out about Nicholas from the people who knew him, not the people who used him, he saw many similarities. Nicholas didn't feel loved and accepted by his father. The same for Sebastian
Nicholas fell in love with Katherine when he was young and wanted to marry her, but family wouldn't allow it. Sebastian fell in love with Kat (often a nickname for Katherine). Hendon wouldn't allow Sebastian to marry Kat.
Nicholas accused of a murder that he didn't commit by men who hated him, Sebastian was accused by Jarvis. Jarvis approved of both men's arrests.
