Would you like to request a buddy read? This is the thread where you can discuss and plan it. Your chosen book can either be by Charles Dickens, or relating to him in some way, or by one of his contemporaries, or about the Victorian Age, to keep it within the group's remit.

Please note, there need to be 3 members before it can be set up.

Thanks!

Joanna Does anyone happen to be reading Great Expectations?

Great! I hope you both get a couple of buddies for these, and when you have, I'll set you a discussion thread up :)

Thanks Jean! :) No worries if not...I just wondered, since I've been reading it lately.

The Woman in White is a wonderful read!!! I have the Moonstone on my TBR.

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 362 comments I just wondered if anyone is interested in buddy reading Charles Dickens and the House of Fallen Women by Jenny Hartley?

I bought this a while ago but haven't read it yet. It is about Urania Cottage, which he ran together with Angela Burdett Coutts, and looks at how the women who emigrated to Australia got on. No worries if not though, I'm happy to read it alone. :)

I hope we can get a buddy read up of that one, - and/or it would make a great side read! It's the book I mentioned in my post about Urania Cottage in our current read :) I can't really commit to it at the moment though.

message 9: by Judy (new)

Judy (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejudyg) | 362 comments Thank you Jean - if no one is able to join in on the book about Urania Cottage, I will probably try to read it fairly soon while David Copperfield is fresh in my mind, and then if it is discussed as a future side read or buddy read, I will have another look at it so I can join in. :)

message 14: by Dean (new)

Dean Jean, I'm willing and open to buddy read any novel by Dickens!!

message 15: by Bionic Jean, "Dickens Duchess" (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) | 8393 comments Mod
Ah, then I should think someone will take you up on this! Anyone?

And have you voted in our poll, Dean? That will decide which novel we will read next as a group.

message 16: by Dean (new)

Dean I've already done so Jane..

I'll set you all up a thread towards the end of the year :)

Be aware though that we'll be deciding which novel to have as our next main group read soon, so there is a possibility that The Pickwick Papers will be read as a group starting the next month!

You still have time to wait and see, and join in with our nominations, anyway :)

Laura (Reading is a Doing Word) (readingisadoingword) | 56 comments Hello all,
I may have missed whether Pickwick Papers was selected as a group read? I'm going to go ahead and start in Jan so still up for a buddy read if others still keen.

message 26: by Bionic Jean, "Dickens Duchess" (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) | 8393 comments Mod
I've set it up for you now Laura, as it wasn't chosen: LINK HERE

It might be an idea to message the others, if they don't respond here, to remind them.

We have two shorts this month, and the next main novel voted in is Dombey and Son. The main page shows all this, and you should get a notification a week before any read.

Is there anyone who didn't do the Little Dorrit group read last year who would like to do it as a buddy read?

Bridget you mentioned you just started Little Dorrit today, so I thought I'd ask. I want to read Little Dorrit and David Copperfield so I'm familiar with the references for the next group read!

message 29: by Sue (new)

Sue | 1141 comments I might be interested in reading Little Dorrit depending on the pace of the reading. I have many other books to read, as I imagine you do too. And I see I do have a copy on my kindle.

Just let me know if/when when you're ready for a thread :) Hopefully Bridget will see this too, so that's at least three.

I'm up for a buddy read of David Copperfield, too!

I'm flexible with which I read first and with a reading schedule. As long as we read them by next January when the group read starts again, I'll be happy :)

message 33: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Clark | 388 comments I'm free to start next week myself!

Jenny wrote: "I'm free to start next week myself!"

Have you read Little Dorrit?

message 35: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Clark | 388 comments Yes, I read it with the group, but I'd be willing to join in with you if you need an extra person for the read

message 36: by Bionic Jean, "Dickens Duchess" (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) | 8393 comments Mod
Or ... if there are just 2 or 3, it might be better to add your comments in to the main read? The comments there are well worth reading anyway, and you can skip the summaries, (except for enjoying the illustrations). It also means you can each read at your own pace, and several of us will probably add our bits after yours :)

It would be a shame if you missed out on that, and Nisa's links make it far easier to navigate than many group reads.

What do you think?

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

I'd planned to read the group discussions for LD and DC whether I read them alone or as a buddy read.

Jean can we wait through the weekend to see if anyone else wants to join a buddy read?

message 38: by Bionic Jean, "Dickens Duchess" (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) | 8393 comments Mod
Sure :)

message 39: by Sue (new)

Sue | 1141 comments Cozy_Pug, are you still interested in reading Little Dorrit?

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes I plan to read Little Dorrit and David Copperfield both.

I can start anytime but I prefer to only read one at a time lol :D

message 41: by Fiona (new)

Fiona I’ve just joined the group. Looking forward to a Dickens buddy read which is why I joined, having read the reviews of Dombey and Son. I’m not sure that I’d join in with anything else but it will probably depend on what you choose.

message 42: by Sue (new)

Sue | 1141 comments Let me know what works for you. I wouldn’t mind putting it off for a while since I seem to be building up reading commitments every day. But I will do what works.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Sue - we could wait and do Dorrit in late summer or fall, and in the meantime....

Jenny - we can start David C next week if you still want, and...

Fiona; - would you like to read David Copperfield as a buddy read with Jenny and me?

Anyone else interested in a buddy read of David Copperfield, starting next week?

message 44: by Sue (new)

Sue | 1141 comments Sounds good to me, C. P. I wish I had the time for David Copperfield too. Will you be reading it at the same slow pace?

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Sue wrote: "Sounds good to me, C. P. I wish I had the time for David Copperfield too. Will you be reading it at the same slow pace?"

Oh I didn't realize you wanted to read DC, too. Fiddlesticks! If we did a slow read of it could you fit in now?

I'd like to do the slow read, a chapter a day with a day off between installments. Not sure how others feel about that pace, I'm totally flexible.

Two of the group reads I had scheduled for this month I've ditched, so I have room and time now to start another Dickens.

message 46: by Sue (new)

Sue | 1141 comments I do want to read DC. If it’s read slowly, I think I will be able to keep up. Even if I get behind a bit, it should be fairly easy to catch up. And I just checked. I have it already on my kindle too.

message 47: by Sue (new)

Sue | 1141 comments Obviously, whatever the majority wants will decide.

Hi - yes, I’d be happy to buddy read David Copperfield as I haven’t read it before. A slow pace, as suggested, would suit me best as I have other books on the go just now. I’ve never done a buddy read so I’ll fit in with what’s decided. Thanks for the invitation :)

Oh yay, Fiona! That's perfect - that gives us 4 people for David Copperfield. So glad you popped in today!

Jean - we have a count of 4 people for a David Copperfield buddy read. Is that enough to have our own thread, please?

message 50: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Clark | 388 comments Cozy Pug, a chapter a day sounds good to me, and whatever day to start David C. is fine by me as well :)
