No. Not at all. For some reason, I figured he was brought up in a fine house with servants. We knew his sister was murdered. I figured that is what drove him to join Scotland Yard.
No, I did not suspect that he knew these guys from youth.
I suspected it was something like that. I never bought the choirboy detective persona. I always felt he had a dark past he was trying to overcome.

Yea, that was another surprise. I knew that his sister had been murdered and that this had turned him into a vigilante of some kind, but I never thought he was actually a thief.
