Sebastian Montcrief recognized that Lorelai was The Rook’s one weakness. Did he exploit it or was his betrayal an attempt to get his pirate back?

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments When Montcrieff released Veronica and Lorelai from the ship, I figured he was trying to get The Rook back on the trail of the treasure. He figured if Lorelai was out of the picture, he could steer him into looking for the map. When he kidnapped her toward the end of the book, I thought he was trying to get himself killed, because Ash would never let her go.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments I agree with Robin in the first instance, but I could not figure his motive beyond wanting treasure. Of course, salt was not what he thought they were after!

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments The Rook had never shown a weakness ever before and Moncrieff wanted him back on track, going for the treasure. He thought releasing Lorelai and Veronica from the ship would get him back on track.

I think his plan, at first, was to get his pirate back. Once he saw that Lorelai was truly The Rook’s weakness, he saw an opportunity to exploit it and did. There was no loyalty among these men...they were pirates and it was all about the treasures.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments I agree, Jonetta. I also think at first he wanted to get The Rook back on track finding the treasure.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1811 comments I agree, Jonetta.
I think he was kind of jealous that Lorelai had such a hold on Ash and was changing him into someone Sebastian did not recognize. Sebastian wanted the status quo to remain and seized the opportunity when he could.
