Emma | meadowroselibrary Black bears are rarely seen in Indiana. In 2015, a black bear entered the state from Michigan, becoming the first black bear confirmed in Indiana since the 1870s, DNR said. Since 2015, the state agency has confirmed three black bears in the Hoosier state.

πŸ˜‚ Yeah we usually have a major thaw sometime in December or January, but we usually have a lot more snow when it happens so we still have some left when it's over! I don't think I've ever seen this much bare ground this late!

Joanna So I was walking in the woods one afternoon early last summer, and the woods are so thick that time of year, it's easy to get disoriented if you're paying more attention to the plants than where you're walking. And that's what happened to me...suddenly I had NO idea where I was! I just kept heading north as best as I could tell (the sun was almost directly overhead) and along the way, I came across the moose skull. I was in such a hurry to get home before my family started worrying, I just snapped a picture, grabbed it, and kept going. I finally came out of the woods, but into a field I'd never seen before. While I was walking around trying to get my bearings, a man on a dirt bike rode up. So there I was holding a camera and a moose skull, and I was so desperate I flagged him down, said where I lived and asked if he knew how I could get home? πŸ™ˆ 🀣 It turned out to be quite simple, but I somehow had managed to get at least a mile out of my usual path! I still can't figure that out!

Sounds like the beginning of a Stephen King book. πŸ˜‰πŸ€£

So how far away from your house did you end up? Did the guy say anything about you carrying an animal skull? 🀣

I just read an article from the Pennsylvania Game Commission stating there are at least 20,000 black bears in PA. Add to that the increasing number of bears from New Jersey who swim across the Delaware River to get to PA, I would guess the number is growing. I don't blame the poor Jersey bears for fleeing! We never used to have bears in southeast PA, but now they are aften found in my area. I've had many bear encounters in my lifetime. They really are fascinating animals. My very favorite PA wild animal is the Whitetail Deer. We have about 1.5 million in the state~an average of 30 deer per sqare mile. There are many in the wooded area behind my house. Very beautiful animals!

Pamela | 2209 comments I forgot to add that you can often smell a black bear before you see it, at least in PA. They enjoy swimming in swamps, thus the lovely fragrance. 🀭🀭🀭😝 Nevertheless, they are pretty animals in general. The cubs are especially cute!

message 4887: by Joanna (new)

Joanna I think that's great that they are making a comeback, Pammy Jo! They are beautiful animals and I love the cubs! 😁

Wow, you have A LOT more deer than we do! Maine's population is only 300,000. The deep snows take a toll on them, from what I've heard. It's hard for them to find enough to eat. Our neighbor feeds them and usually has a whole herd in his yard!

🀣🀣 Yeah, I've heard that! There've been a few times in the woods that I smelled something a little strange and wondered if a bear was nearby...

While bears will roam far and wide, deer spend their entire lives in a 3/4 to 1 square mile area. When we had our vacation home in the Poconos, a doe became so tame that she would eat crackers out of our hands. One day, she came out of the woods, looked at us, returned to the woods and then came back into our yard, nudging her two fawns over to us. She showed them she didn't fear us. After the doe ate from our hands, she somehow communicated to her fawns that they were safe, and they ate from our hands, too! This went on for years, as each generation of deer continued to visit our yard, feeling safe with us. We never fed them lots, just a few crackers. We knew they had to know how to survive on their own in the woods. It was amazing!πŸ™‚ Only the does did this. Never any bucks. They are known to be quite aggressive. We have many family movies, which my grandmother took, of the deer taking the crackers from us!
