Oh, I didn't realize my dad still had those videos up! πŸ˜„ He took them when he was in training after being ordained. Here's a little article that explains what the Proskomedia is...

Well, we saw way too many meteors to count, we would guess maybe 15 - 20! So it was a success! πŸ˜‚

message 2018: by Lily Rose (new)

Lily Rose Dorothea | 1454 comments So, our whirlwind trip is over. I did have a lot of fun, but I'm glad to be back home...I missed my Twup! At any rate, we ended up not being able to get a hotel the first night because we didn't arrive until after 4 am and they refused their own coupon, so we ended up spending the night in the van at a truck stop, where my father lost his phone in the side of the rental van. (The only phone we had along...good thing it wasn't his wallet or keys!) It was dark and he didn't see that the insert in the cupholder was gone, so down it went. So we inched our way up, and finally got a hotel in Albany the second night. Paid more than we would have the night before, but we had more time! So then we came up through the Green and the White mountains...it was quite a trip, and that's just a summary!

Yes, it was quite the adventure. I was also kicked out of a convenience store because I didn't have a mask. "The woman will have to leave," as she told my father. (He didn't have a mask, but he has severe asthma so she let him stay. I don't do well with them either, but I was too annoyed to think, so I left.)

She certainly wasn't polite. Actually began turning and walking away as she told me she couldn't serve me and I would have to leave. I was glad to get out of New York. They're not "New York Tough," they're "New York Nasty."

message 2043: by Joanna (new)

Joanna People seem to be growing more and more nasty instead of caring and helpful. I guess Hawthorne summed it up pretty well...

β€œThere is no other fear so horrible and unhumanizing as that which makes man dread to breathe heaven’s vital air lest it be poison, or to grasp the hand of a brother or friend lest the grip of the pestilence should clutch him.”

That is so true, Meg. My area (Suburban Philadelphia) is getting heartless. On the news tonight they said an elderly man was sitting on his porch and someone drove by, fired a gun out the car window and shot the poor man in the leg! It's disheartening and frightening.

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments Dehumanizing is right.

Oh that poor old man, how evil!!

message 2047: by Joanna (new)

Joanna That is just horrible. There is so much evil going on now...I shudder to think what our founding fathers would say if they could see the country now.

Pamela | 2209 comments Meg wrote: "That is just horrible. There is so much evil going on now...I shudder to think what our founding fathers would say if they could see the country now."

Surely they would feel deep sorrow. It worries me so, as many great societies and powerful nations have crumbled when moral corruption became commonplace. It's sad and very frightening.

Lily Rose Dorothea | 1454 comments That poor man! Did the shooter claim to have a reason to have done that? (Not that it would be legitimate, of course.)

message 2050: by Joanna (new)

Joanna I just learned something this morning which I found really exciting! Of course, living in northern Maine not too far from the Allagash and Katahdin, I've at least seen some of the same views that Mr. Thoreau saw when he visited Maine. But now I've found out that I've actually been over some of the exact same ground, not in Maine, but on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire! I didn't even know that he'd visited the White Mountains, but it turns out that he did twice, first with his older brother John in 1839, and again in 1858. On the second trip, he walked part of the way on what is now the auto road which we took. He was exploring in Tuckerman's Ravine when he had a bad fall and sprained his foot. The stories are a little mixed up about what he was doing there...one story is that he had just seen the plant Arnica mullis and fell trying to get to it, but according to Emerson, he had already fallen and was in the process of getting up when he noticed it. Either way, it sounds just like something I would do! πŸ˜‚ I took a picture of the top of Tuckerman's Ravine from the summit when we visited last year...
