Pamela | 2209 comments My mom just informed me that she wants me to dye her hair tonight. I have never before done that! I don't color my own hair and have never even had it done professionally. I know nothing about coloring hair! I told her I want her to sign a release form absolving me of any harm or damage I may cause to her hair or to her person! She was not amused!😀😁😂🤣😃😆😄🤡 So, we'll see how this works out!🤞😝

I have been terrified of Santa ever since I was a child and my grandfather, dressed as Santa, came to our back door at exactly the same time as the fire company Santa came to our front door! I was so worked up that I ran into the windowsill, whacked my head, and gave myself a concussion! TRUE STORY!🚫🎅👎😂🤣😆🤪

Pamela | 2209 comments On an exciting, light, note (for me, anyway), I just heard on the radio that Jimmy Buffett is going to be in concert at the BB&T Pavilion in Camden, NJ this Thursday, Aug 12, 2021! I can watch/listen to it live, online! I'm not in shape to actually attend...too hot! I'm excited, nevertheless, as I love Jimmy Buffett!!!

Pamela | 2209 comments Still no notification or updates for me from any of my groups. I suppose it's another case of a few people not following rules messing things up for everybody else. That seems to be a common thing in all walks of life today.

The other day, computers were down at the grocery store where I shop. Nobody could check out. Same thing at my local gas station. I think we should go back to using the old fashioned, fancy, hand crank/manual registers made by National Cash Register back in the good old days. They were works of art! Wait, not a good idea as people would actually have to know how to add and subtract in their heads then. That ability seems to be gone with the wind, too! 😀😂🤣😃😅😆😉 My friend's kids take calculators to school now...had my generation done that it would have been an automatic F for the course! If all computer systems ever crash at the same time, it will be a disaster!😳✒📓

Sadly, most of those link to unacceptable porn sites and such. I know, as I get quite a few of those requests each week. The first time I got one, I didn't realize that's what it was, so I clicked on the link in the "friend" request and was immediately taken to a porn site! When I get suspicious "friend" requests or "followers" now, I immediately refuse the request and block them. It's too bad there are those who use Goodreads for unacceptable nonsense.😠 It seems to be the way of the world today. No doubt, that's why Goodreads shuts down notifactions and such so often.

Same here, Loretta! Flooding and road closures everywhere! I am soooo weary of bad weather. It's destructive and costs some people their lives. Praying it stops soon, as I have an appointment tomorrow which I cannot change and it is 30 minutes away.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 They say it will still be raining heavily here overnight, so I'm nervous about the drive in the morning. The ground was already saturated from tropical storm Fred, and now we have the effects from Henri. This is why I have come to fear late summer and autumn. Hurricane season doesn't end until November 30th, and things continue to look very active according to the Hurricane Prediction Center.😳 There are terrible weather situations across the country right now. Worrisome.

message 6076: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments Thank you, Werner! I just got a call to tell me my appointment has been postponed because of the flooding. I'm so thankful about that! They just updated the forecast here and have increased the rain amounts, plus they've added the chance for severe storms for tomorrow, so I'm very grateful that I won't need to drive in the morning.🙏

Were you affected by Henri? I heard the flooding was catastrophic in parts of Tennessee and I know you're somewhere in Virginia, but am not sure how far south you and Barb live. I've been through Virginia and Tennessee several times, often during bad weather. The worst was an Easter weekend ice storm. Our car was actually demolished by a drunk driver on route 40. My grandfather was slightly injured, but my parents and I were okay. Because it was Easter, no car rentals were available. We had to rent a huge Ryder truck! Thankfully, my dad had been a truck driver when he was young, so could handle the Ryder! Following the accident, the Tennessee State Police transported us wherever we needed to go. That trip was surely one we never forgot, and was the last time we went to Tennessee!

Werner | 600 comments Mod
Glad your appointment was postponed, Pamela; and glad your accident in Tennessee wasn't any worse than it was!

Barb and i live in Bluefield, VA, the smaller sister city of Bluefield, WV; so we're in Virginia's southwestern panhandle, at about the midpoint of the southern border of West Virginia. As hurricanes generally do around here, Henri caused us several rainy days; but since our weather has been relatively dry, we needed the rain.

message 6078: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments Just when I thought I had heard everything, I found out I haven't! Our local community website is advertising something called "Swimply." If you don't have a pool, but would like to swim, you can rent someone's swimming pool by the hour! It costs between $30.00 and $125.00 PER HOUR, depending on how much a person thinks their pool is worth! I can't believe it! Our local YMCA has a huge pool which is availabe to all members and membership is $150.00 per season. It's available all day! Better yet, I have a sprinkler hooked up to my garden hose which is quite refreshing! Maybe I should start renting that out by the hour! I would ask people to bring their own chair to cut down on the cost! LOL!!!

Our power held, too! That always worries me. The rain was unbelievable and kept training over and over in our area. Now it is extremely hot again. I'll be glad for cooler weather! Hurricane season lasts until November 30th and they say the Atlantic looks very active. Praying they are all "fish storms" and stay out at sea! It's terrible to hear about all of the disasters across our country. I have my own theory as to the reasons for that. It harkens back to Biblical times, in my opinion. That's all I have to say about that.😉

Speaking of Biblical things, have you heard anything about Pope Francis stepping down? They were talking about it on the radio this morning. I think it's a rumor and not really going to happen. Nevertheless, it has me wondering, especially with his recent health trouble. It wouldn't be unprecedented in light of the fact that Pope Benedict XVI did choose to resign.

I hadn't heard, so I looked it up. All I can find for recent news (today) is that he accepted the resignation of a Brazilian bishop; so I don't know.

I looked into the story and found out "the confusing reports are probably explained by a mistranslation of Italian into English." Although Pope Francis has been having health problems, The Catholic News Agency says he does not plan to step down. I didn't think the report that he would step down was accurate.

Pamela | 2209 comments Flood warnings here again all morning. We were already saturated from Fred & Henri. Now they say we should expect flooding rains from Hurricane Ida by midweek. We can't take on any more water. I'm praying for everyone in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, and for everyone who will be affected by the storm. It's looking devastating for the Gulf. Also praying for those killed and injured in Afghanistan, and their families. May God bless the men and woman in the military, and their families. So much sadness and devastation in so many places.😥🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

As soon as I think it's safe upstairs, the alerts start coming in and back to the basement I go! My cats go with me, of course. They are not happy! Pamela | 2209 comments Loretta,

I've had you on my mind and in my prayers. This weather has been terrible. We had another 4 inches of rain last night. Another tornado hit north of here last night, near my aunt's house. They are without power and trees are down everywhere! I never lived through anything like this before and feel like we live in the new "tornado alley!" I feel so bad for those who have lost everything, including lives lost. So sad and frightening!

Pam

message 6089: by Pamela (new)

message 6090: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments I think I'd rather shovel snow than deal with all of the rain, tornadoes and hurricanes. I just hope we don't get ice storms. Snow is less damaging.

message 6091: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments I just received an email stating that both of the hospitals near me are at 90% bed occupancy, most admissions due to new Covid cases. One of the hospitals is reporting that numerous nurses and a few doctors have breakthrough cases, after being fully vaccinated. They alerted the public that they are so short staffed that they must send patients to hospitals in the surrounding counties.

Numerous schools in PA have gone back to virtual learning due to a spike in Covid cases during the past 2 weeks. Praying things improve soon.

Pamela, thanks for the update! Ever since March of 2020, the pandemic has been much in my prayers as well, both that God will deliver us all and work for good in the meantime (which I trust that He is doing). Barb often says she believes He permitted this as a wake-up call to the world, which I think is probably true; but sadly, as far as spiritual and moral regeneration goes, I fear that a great many people worldwide have put the call on snooze button. :-(

I agree that the pandemic is a "wake up call." I also think the weather related issues, worlwide, are in keeping with the book of Revelation. We are living in a very dangerous time. I wonder how much longer this can go on?

Our local public library branch rarely has the books I am looking for. Lately, I go on Ebay and look for used copies of books I want. It's the only way I can find the ones I want to read.

Hope all is well with you! I had a nice visit with my friend Lizanne and her husband Joe today. We're expecting bad weather again later this week. There is no let up from it! So tired of it and I so wish we could have a decent period of nice autumn weather!

Pamela wrote: "I also think the weather related issues, worlwide, are in keeping with the book of Revelation."

Thankfully, wherever we are in God's timetable, we know that the book of Revelation ends with a new heaven and earth, free of sin and suffering. (And, as Simon Peter wrote some 2,000 years ago, our deliverance "is nearer now than when we first believed.")

Since I work in an academic library, I check out books there much more often than at the public libraries in the area; I still resort to interlibrary loan sometimes, but the Bluefield Univ. library has a good deal of what I want, especially classics. Other readers on Goodreads, though, have also complained about scanty selection in public libraries. I suspect that in many cases this is related to tight government budgets and resulting lack of library funding. (Which is ironic, given that government ownership/control of libraries was "sold" to the reading public in the 1800s as a source of a boundless cornucopia of funding for books.... But don't let me get started on that subject!)

Pamela | 2209 comments Checking in to say hello! Hope all is well with everyone. It's feeling like autumn here. I cleaned the chimney and replaced the filter in my furnace. Just in time, as the heat turned on at lunchtime. My cat was terrified of it!🐱😱

The neighborhood skunk has been lurking at my back door each night. The first time I saw it, I thought it was a cat. Thankfully, I realized my mistake before I tried to pet it! The squirrels are busy. The deer are running. Due to the flooding rains recently, I have mushrooms popping up everywhere in my yard, some of which I have never seen before.🐿🦌🍄🤔

While I was out walking a little while ago, the sole of my shoe fell off! I didn't walk THAT far!👟👣🚶‍♀️

So, that's the latest from here. Thinking of all of you and wishing you well! 🍁🍂🍁

I know the feeling, Dorothy. I have natural gas heat, but my mom has an oil furnace. The nice thing about gas is the financial end of it. You pay monthly instead of a costly oil delivery all at once. I also don't have to keep watching the oil tank like my mom does. The down side of natural gas is that you might blow up!💥 Both my mom and I had our furnaces cleaned in August to prepare for winter. I have a contract with UGI, so repairs and maintenance don't cost anything. It's just the yearly contract fee, which isn't bad.

I have come to really hate autumn because of hurricanes. Tornadoes are equally bad, and we've had severe outbreaks too many times this year!

I used to enjoy raking when I was young and it was a family effort. Now, I'm the only one left to do the raking. My mom helps right around the house, but I have nearly 3 acres of property to rake and I dread it. We had horses, sheep, chickens and other animals when I was young, so the property was nice to have then. Now, it's become a burden. I do enjoy the fall weather, though, when it's nice. We are expecting rain every day this week. We don't need it.😝
