Yep, it's a really mixed up world. It breaks my heart, the things people have been doing lately. 😥

Joanna Would you all please pray for our family, and my dad especially? He came down with cold symptoms a few days ago, and now it has gone to his chest and he's pretty sick. We're hoping it's not "the" bug. He has bad asthma so he's at high risk if he did get it. 😔

Emma | meadowroselibrary Oh no! Yes, I will definitely pray for him!

Yes I'm still here and hanging in there. Meg, when you can let us know how your dad is doing. I see we're going to read Mosses from an Old Manse for our July group read. Looking forward to anything by Hawthorne. Already have my book ready.

Hi Doreen...I was hoping all was well with you! The heat has been getting to us too. As of last night my dad was the same - coughing a lot and definitely not feeling well but no fever and his appetite is good. He's not awake yet this morning. Our Amish friends have the same bug (that's how he got it). One of them called last night and told me to encourage him and that he didn't believe it was Covid19. That was nice of him. 😊
Yes, I'm terribly excited about Mosses from an Old Manse! Have you read it before? I've wanted to read it for a long time and now it will be even more fun reading it with you all! 🤗

Joanna My favorite wildflower is in bloom in the woods!! ❤ It was also the favorite of the great Swedish botanist Linnaeus, and named for him (Linnaea borealis). He can be seen holding it in most of his portraits. Emerson refers to this in his 'Wood-notes' (he is talking about Thoreau's excursions in the Maine woods)...

"In unploughed Maine, he sought the lumberer's gang,
Where from a hundred lakes young rivers sprang;
He trod the unplanted forest-floor, whereon
The all-seeing sun for ages hath not shone,
Where feeds the moose, and walks the surly bear,
And up the tall mast runs the woodpecker.
He saw, beneath dim aisles, in odorous beds,
The slight Linnæa hang its twin-born heads,
And blessed the monument of the man of flowers,
Which breathes his sweet fame through the Northern bowers."

Emma | meadowroselibrary Beautiful! :D

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments Hi Meg,
That is a lovely and sentimental poem.
I have never seen the Northern bowers
before nor the botanist for that matter.
Thanks for posting these lush images.☺

I am relieved to read your father doesn't
have a fever. Any improvements?

In less than a month the woods change from grim mossy swamps to almost tropical vegetation! It's funny, I know these woods so well that even in winter when the snow is 3 or 4 feet deep, I can stop at a given spot and know what blooms there in the summer. But now everything is so thick, I actually got lost once for a little while this morning!

My dad is feeling quite a bit better today. Still coughing but his voice sounds better (it was almost gone yesterday) and he feels stronger. It's such a relief! 😊

You are a trooper, Doreen. 😉

Incidentally, have you ever seen or
sampled a huckleberry? Since you
are near the heart of N.E.L. country
Thoreau mentioned it in Walden
"A huckleberry never reaches Boston; they have not been known there since they grew on her three hills."

That is Fantastic news Meg.

A young Kate Furbish, I imagine
she was the same way.
It is extraordinary how the woods
have changed from less than two
months ago.
I'd love to give you half of our Texas
summers to extend yours, giving
you more time to explore.

Well an extra month or two of summer would be lovely, but please don't send your heat! 😉 I was thinking of you this past week when we had several days in the upper 90s. It was almosr unbearable...I don't know how you manage to endure it for months on end!

Jasmine Shadows (jasmineshadows) | 33 comments Hi there Meg. I just received the message of your dad's illness. Please know that I will be praying for him. I am glad that he is feeling a little bit better. Please keep us posted. I too have asthma. So I fully understand the concern for your dad. I used to really suffer with it in Colorado, but praises to God I have not had one incidence of it sense relocating to Arkansas. I actually have less problems in a humid environment. I am allergic to dry air and dust, and that was one of the worst to set my asthma off
Also you have posted some absolutely wonderful pictures. Those bell flowers will be wonderful attractions for pollinators. Anything that keeps our wonderful bumble bees and butterflies near is a joy for me.

Thank you for your prayers, Jasmine. That means a lot! He wasn't feeling very good today. He was thinking about getting tested, but apparently you can't get tested around here unless you're admitted to the hospital. He is isolating himself as much as possible, just in case.

I must look into it.

I have heard good things about elderberry! We don't have the syrup but we do have elderberry tea. He doesn't like tea though, so all I can do is offer it to him. 😄 I don't like tea either but since you reminded me I may start drinking it myself!

Emma | meadowroselibrary That's cool Ruth! We always just make it ourselves, but I'm sure you can get it at stores.

Hi Emma,
Thank you for the recipe, it is
remarkably easy. I will have to
make it when my mother isn't
around- I had made some granola
with honey and the dear soul
spent the day sneezing.

Hi Emma,
What is the full flavor of elderberry like?
I had some dried sort which were insipid.

Emma | meadowroselibrary I guess it just has it's own berry flavor. We normally use dry berries and they rehydrate in the boiling water. Does that answer your question? ❤️

Somewhat. Is it similar to blackberries,
tangy or tart?
