What time period/location does the story take place?What genre: fantasy, horror, science fiction, mystery, etc?

So i couldn't tell you where it occurred. Time period..I would say 18th 19th century well from what they used. More like metal weapons, and bows.

Main character: A boy who goes into this vast ocean on a ship, then falls into the water.
Monsters: They learn everything about you if your blood touches the water.
When he touched the water the monster(s) spoke into his mind his name, and said "they know everything about him".
After that he was saved somehow, and was taken back up into the water. Everyone was scared of him or for him, cause he shouldn't have lived, or been saved.
Time i read this: About 5 or 6 years ago. It has at least 2 books in it. I have been searching for this book all this time. Not to make it seem like a sob story, but i may be dying, and before i die i would like to read the book again, and read the second. I have cancer if anyone is wondering. If you have any questions about the book i will try to remember.
