SOLVED. Seeking the book about letters falling off a statue, and then being banned from use. [s]

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to track down a fictional novel I read at least 15 years ago.

It was a very clever story about a community on an island (I think), that has a statue in the square which features a phrase with each letter of the alphabet.

When one of the letters falls of the statue, the major declares that no citizen shall henceforth use that letter. The text that follows then doesn't use this letter.

Bit by bit more letters fall off and are then omitted from the book.

It was such a fun and clever book, I'd like to share it with my children, but I can't remember what it was called or who wrote it.

If anyone knows, that would be great - thank you.
